Hey guys, Im sure everyone knows what happened in japan, the earthquake and tsunami hit them really hard and they need help. So Im going to suggest that we the community pull together and start hosting smash tournaments where all proceeds go to relief in japan. For instance, I got a $10 gift card to gamestop and Im giving that out as the prize for a $10 smash tournament, and every entry fee goes to helping japan. So what does everyone think of this? who will do it?

I would definitely enter one of these. As long as we all enter singles and doubles, and record some videos, I don't see any reason why people wouldn't want to do this if they aren't pressed for money.

I don't see the point of this. I'd much rather donate to the relief fund straight up than commit a whole day playing in a tournament where no prize money is on the line. I'm pretty sure most others would agree with me on this.

I think a Charity tournament (for smashers) would work out better if you offer a percentage of the pot to charity but not all of it. As Juggle pointed out, why bother playing when you could just donate all the money in the first place.

Smash isn't like NBA where you could have the players do 1 event for free and thousand of spectators will show up and pay money. You could probably just offer 50% to charity and still leave players with an attendance based reason to to win. Or you could get creative and find a really cool prize that works instead of money. Something useful but cheap (like clearance electronics). Anyway if you want to see a good turnout for a charity event, you need to do something better than "guys lets have a big smashfest and also donate a bunch of money".

Also gift cards are lame.

AXS 2 had a $10 venue fee that wasn't actually towards the venue - it was actually a donation to Relay for Life (the tournament was a fundraiser). The pot was untouched and completely paid out to the winners. I'd recommend this approach.

i definitely like this.

in fact i think we should really start hosting tournaments as charity events. I know i would definitely be all for that. It could really lead to good things, and of course we could probably get sponsorships i suppose as well.

I see your point saying you would rather just donate directly to an organization, But pulling people into donation by presenting a fun awesome tournament is more alluring than "Hey...donate" And most people dont win tournaments, they would be spending the day paying an entry fee of $10 and not getting it back anyway, so why not not get it back and let it go to a good cause?

And then theres local's who don't really play the game for money, but hey a $10 gift card to gamestop is worth it to them.

Yea, getting a sponsorship would be awesome, for example getting a copy of Pokemon black or white to give to the winner donated from a company. That would be sweet.
