Attractions:

Say you arrive early, or you leave late, and you don’t want to just sit there for hours on end. Halifax has a plethora of cultural and historical sights for you to see; parks to visit; malls to shop in, whatever!

Up the hill and then up another hill is Citadel Hill, a super kickass base/prison used during most prominent wars that included Halifax between the 1750s and the 1830s. Nowadays it’s just a tourist attraction: it has cannons and they still work (they fire a blank once every day at noon), although it’s just tradition since we’re not really expecting any wooden galleons to roll into our harbor and start making noise any time soon.

We got two provincial parks just a stone’s throw from downtown: The Public Gardens, a national historical site of Canada, and Point Pleasant Park, best known for its wide jogging trails, its 186 acres of forest, its wild coyotes, its breathtaking views of the ocean, and at least three more historical sights, each of them fortresses.
Culture and historical significance not your cup-a-joe? Let’s get modernized: it’s a bit of a hike, but The Halifax Shopping Centre is Halifax’s go-to shopping mall for your consumerist needs: book stores, game stores, novelty stores, clothes stores, a bigass food court, it’s got everything you could need. A bit more locally is Park Lane, a maybe ten-minute walk from the HUB – though not nearly as large as the Shopping Centre, it’s still armed to the teeth with more than enough souvenirs for you to spend your winnings on when you inevitably win HellaSmashed, as well as a movie theatre with arcade. And that’s all to say nothing of downtown Halifax itself! It’s got just about everything you could possibly have an obscure hobby for: new-age stores with mood rocks and music; stores for compulsive collectors; toy stores (also in ‘adult’ variety); if you want it, chances are downtown Halifax has it.

Like beer? Halifax has you covered: we got more bars, clubs and pubs than you could shake a stick at. The Wikipedia article for Downtown Halifax states, and I quote, that “the area is home to approximately 200 restaurants and bars”, and you know what? I honestly believe that. If drinking isn’t your thing but you still want to seem like an adult, we have a casino just a short walk away – if you couldn’t land a hit in Smash, then maybe you’ll have better luck at blackjack. And the age limit for gambling and drinking in Canada is 19!

So hey, it wouldn’t be so bad a place to visit, would it? Come on down to the province, and the city, that gave the world delights like Picnicface, Wintersleep, The Stanfields, Sidney Crosby, Ellen Page, the world’s largest accidental man-made explosion and single largest loss of life in the western hemisphere before 9/11, the graves of the Titanic victims, and April Wine. Also a lesbian store called Venus Envy where you can buy chocolate lollipops shaped like vaginas for you to munch on. Not a word in that sentence is a lie.

RULES:
This tournament will be used with the Apex 2013 ruleset.

3 Stock
8 minute timer
Items are set to "off" and "none"

- All sets are best 2 of 3 matches. Bracket Finals and Grand Finals are Best 3 of 5.

- If the timer runs out, the victor is determined first by stock and then by percentage. In teams, each players stock/percent is added together. If a team member has been defeated by the time-out, his stock and damage will be assumed as zero.
- All infinites and chain grabs are legal.

- Resolving Ties: If percents are the same or both players die simultaneously (Causing Sudden Death. If you Dedede/Ganoncide and you LOSE, that is the result. Be aware of the risk.), there will be a 1 stock, 3 minute, same characters, same stage rematch.

- You are responsible for your own controller and name tag. If a match is to be restarted due to controller functions, it must be agreed upon by both parties.

- Stalling is banned.
- Stalling: The act of deliberately avoiding any and all conflict so that one may make the game unplayable. Running away from an opponent to reach a better position is not stalling, while using an infinite to run out the timer rather than to score a KO is. As such, any infinite chain-grabs, locks, etc. cannot exceed 300%.

- Meta Knight is legal.
- Infinite Dimensional Cape (IDC) is banned.
- IDC is a glitch that causes Meta Knight to become permanently invisible and invincible, as long as the player can hold it. This is considered stalling and is banned.
- Double Meta Knight is banned in doubles. Only one player per team may go Meta Knight.

- There is a 50 Ledge Grab Limit. If your ledge grabs exceed 50, but the match does not go to time, then it's irrelevant. If the match does, then whoever exceeded 50 ledge grabs automatically loses the match.
- If both players exceed 50 and the match goes to time, this rule is ignored.
- Meta Knight has a LGL of 25.

- Any action which prevents the game from continuing (i.e. by causing the game to crash or causing all characters to freeze indefinitely) is banned. If the Tournament Organizer or a judge can conclusively determine the player responsible for the failure, that player loses the interrupted game. Players are expected to know their characters and prevent this from happening.

- No player may choose a stage they have already won on in that set unless agreed upon by both players. (Dave's Stupid Rule)

- Coaching is allowed between matches, but not during them. Each player can only have one dedicated coach per set.
- Coaching is allowed during matches in the crew battle, and while each player can only have one dedicated coach, teams can still coach the player as a group.

SET FORMATS:

Determining Player Priority
If there is a dispute in controller port selection or initiating Stage Strike use the following method:

Teams will use a random method such as Rock-Paper-Scissors, Coin Flip, or Game and Watch Judgment, where the winner selects either first choice in port selection or first choice in stage striking. Whichever team does not receive first choice in port selection will be compensated with first choice in stage striking.
Note: In Doubles, port selection is ordered 1-2-2-1 fashion (with Team-1 having first choice in controller slot select, Team-2 having both second and third choice, and the final slot going to Team-1).

1. Opponents make their character select screen choices for the first match, DOUBLE BLIND PICKS OPTIONAL.

2. Opponents start the stage striking procedure.

The stage striking order changes depending on the number of stages allowed. When reading this order, “1” is player 1 and “2” is player 2. The optimal striking orders are as follows:

7 Stages: 1-1-2-2-2-1 (Read: Player 1 strikes 2, P2 strikes 3, then P1 picks the last stage)

3. The first game is played, using the stage chosen during step 2.

4. The winner of the previous match announces his stage ban.

5. The loser of the previous match announces the next match's stage from either the Starter Stage List or the Counter Stage List.

6. The winner of the previous match chooses their character.

7. The loser of the previous match chooses their character.

8. Repeat steps 5-7 for all proceeding matches.

STAGE LIST:

Starter

Battlefield
Final Destination
Lylat Cruise
Smashville
Yoshi’s Island (Brawl)

Counterpick

Halberd
Castle Siege
Delfino Plaza
Pokemon Stadium 1
Frigate Orpheon

HACKS:

Allowed:
Menu Hacks (from the main menu to character/stage select)
Music Hacks. Some sound hacks (Japanese voices; unobtrusive sounds (death cries, etc.). No custom voice packs)
Technical Hacks (meaning, infinite replay times, default settings modifiers, etc. NO GAME-CHANGING HACKS)

Project M:

RULES:

Entry fee will be the same as Brawl, at $10. The pot for Project M singles will be:

1st - 50%
2nd - 30%
3rd - 15%
4th - 5%
5th - Entry fee returned.

The entry fee and payout for doubles will be the same as in Brawl doubles:

1st - 50%
2nd - 30%
3rd - 20%

In the event that you register for both Brawl and Project M, and your name is called to compete in one while you are busy with another, you will first finish the set you are currently in before reporting to your other station.

4 Stock
8 minute timer
Items are set to "off" and "none"

- All sets are best 2 of 3 matches. Bracket Finals and Grand Finals are Best 3 of 5.

- Every station must be using the current revision of Project M (ver. 2.5b as of March 10th)

- If the timer runs out, the victor is determined first by stock and then by percentage.
In the case that time runs out and both characters have an equal amount of lives, the character with less damage wins the match. If both characters have equal lives and damage, Sudden Death will determine the winner.

5 Stages: 1-2-2-1 (Read: Player 1 strikes 2, P2 strikes 3, then P1 picks the last stage)

Approve of the rule set.

Would like to come out as my family goes to Ontario in the summers, I might be able to get a connecting flight and bus it back.

is there a pot bonus this year?

also, if you moncton nerds want to play, pm me.
HYPEEE, are you hopping on the melee train or is it still just 64? cause i don't think we'll be much practice against you in 64, even if we 2v1'd you, lol

edit: nvm, found footage of the last Hellasmashed on YouTube. totally down to meet up and practice dude

Updated our events and schedule.

1) We're dropping Melee for Project M.
2) We'll be doing all of Brawl on Saturday, followed by all of Project M on Sunday.
3) The venue fee is only $5 per event - if you're only signing up for one event, you only need to pay $5.

My brother and I might be able to make it to this. I'll play Melee with you jerflip, I don't play Brawl.

Also, my brother wants to play Superboom. 64 obviously.

We should just have Melee and P:M on the same day. Like, this is predominantly Brawl, and P:M and Melee have always been more side-event-y. Also, it seems thee are people who would only come for Melee, and we want a bunch of entrants, right?

Just my opinionnnnnnnn.

Hah, and i actually thought this year i'd beat parker and nick. Looks like i'm not going if there is no melee.

- Justin Riley

So i'm still gonna go, not actually that upset but we should really consider having Melee still, please please please

I agree, scrapping Melee for P:M is a mistake. P:M should be a side-event with Brawl/Melee being the main focus

I'll be bringing a Gamecube + TV+ Melee just in case there's room for a Melee friendlies setup

EDIT: also, there are conflicting dates in the opening post (says July 27th as well as August 3rd)

Last year's HellaSmashed had an astounding 10 people enter Melee. That's not a tournament - that's hardly even a smashfest. It's not worth the time or the effort, how little they might even be, to host Melee this year.

I'm just curious as to what makes you think P:M will turn out so much better? Are there already more entrants or do people seem more excited? Just wondering...

For anyone who checks here and not the Facebook group, knock that off right this instant. Also, we're having a change of venue and change of times:

Instead of the Hub, we're at Justin Wiles' apartment: 3095 Olivet Street, Apt 24. Kick in time is noon; kick out time is whenever he tells us to leave. He doesn't work until late on Sunday so we should be fine if some event goes over. No venue fees are necessary but if you want to give him a few bucks I'm sure he'd appreciate that.

We're going to do P:M first since most of our Brawl players also play P:M but not all of our P:M players play Brawl. Doubles first, then singles, then Brawl doubles and singles.
