I'm glad to see Little Mac get confirmed at last! It was about time too!

Enough about that. How about that X footage? From what we've seen, the gameplay looks pretty damn awesome. I just hate how Nintendo is teasing us with the name of the game. I still think that it's a Xenoblade sequel.
I personally kind of doubt it, I really think they'd have out-right said it by now if it was but who knows.

The weapon system has me way, way intrigued.

Yeah. I see the hero wield different sorts of weapons. Even in the first trailer, we've seen him have a sword and then a different gun-like weapon. I think that we will have far more customization when it comes to the characters and weaponry.

Definitely. I'm almost positive that we hadn't seen any of the characters shown in the footage before. Either way, I'm excited.

Now as far as it affects Smash, I'll just mention briefly that the fact that the character seems to be customizable helps to sell Shulk as the Xeno rep. Doubt they'd go with a "blank slate" character over Shulk.

So this does not star Shulk, hmm... little doubts are coming to my head.
Even if it is a Xenoblade sequel that doesn't star him, it doesn't hurt him.

Same. I am definitely excited for X!

I agree. I bet that the main protagonist will not be so much of a blank slate character as he could have some personality to him. With that being said however, I find it impossible to see him over Shulk in Smash. Why would they put in a protagonist we don't know about over a protagonist that is extremely demanded?

I just noticed they added a way to tell where you are in relation to the monster. So now apparently more than just front/side/back will matter, since one of those pics specifies that the player is low to the monster.

If they aren't abandoning that mechanic, maybe we will see Shulk (if he's in, whether this game or next or whatever) having a moveset that implements attacking enemies on different sides.

The most surprising part of the whole direct was Nintendo acknowledging Xenoblade's existence.

It was pretty obvious from the beginning that this game might not star Shulk...

Little Mac was pretty awesome. What an epic reveal. The X footage was good too. Taking Xenoblade as a foundation and building off of in it various ways. The way Iwata referenced Xenoblade makes me wonder how much of a sequel this may actually be. I kind of doubt it as a sequel now but there is so little information to go on. Can't wait until e3 for the inevitable story trailer

Hopefully it won't be that long before we get news again. Fingers crossed for news at another Direct.

I didn't get the watch the direct. Only the mac trailer.

If they are referencing Xenoblade, then I have my hopes still high for Shulk. That shows that Xenoblade has SOME sort of importance.

Nothing new. They acknowledge it. They did give it a puzzle panel.

Well quite honestly, I think this points towards it being a major thing for Nintendo. Shulk detractors can deny it all they want, but that game is getting attention, and basically a sequel. That's big.

Is it just me, or are Shulk's chances higher now that we know this stuff?

I think people could argue that we're too hopeful, but honestly let's just look at some factors.

1.) Xenoblade Puzzle Swap thingy.
2.) Xenoblade is getting either an indirect or possibly direct sequel.
3.) Nintendo is not treating it as some side thing, directly referencing Xenoblade Chronicles as a basis for this X game.

It may not seem like much, but combine that with not-negligible fan demand and Shulk stands out as a character that, despite having only one game to his name, is important enough to at least get consideration.

It's plain and simple if you think about it. If Shulk is going to be in smash, his reveal will coincide with X's release date assuming it comes out before smash that is. I think his chances are pretty good.

Also Shulk did appear briefly (with an HD face btw) in one of X's early trailers. He's most likely not going to be the star of X but I'm sure he's going to be relevant to the games story. I'm thinking the sequel takes place many years in the future and Shulk and crew's exploits have faded into legend... Or something along those lines.

They could pull a "Marth" with Shulk, even if he isn't in X. Marth was the original Lord of Fire Emblem and Shulk could be seen as the original/most well known protagonist if his game started the beginning of a Xenofranchise exclusive to Nintendo consoles(which imo is not that farfetched due X really is a spiritual succesor)

Aside of this, I should requote that :
Final Smash Gamer said:
Beyond representing Xenoblade (and yet-to-confirm-to-be-connected-X), I also see Shulk as a way to represent Monolith Soft, aka Nintendo's newest first party subsidiary.

EDIT : Not to mention Monolith has co-developed a lot of games like AC: New Leaf, Pikmin 3, Zelda: ALBW and Brawl.

Since Monolith's purchase by Nintendo, Xenoblade is by far their most iconic game as a first party Nintendo team, and Shulk would represent them just like Kirby and Mother characters represent HAL Labs., Marth and Co. represent Intelligent System, Pikachu and Co. represent Pokémon Company, etc.

I can't wait to see Monolith Soft's name included in the list of companies owning characters at the bottom of SSB4's official website/title screen. :estatic:

I never managed to finish Xenoblade (stopped playing around when Fiora... well, you know), but I fully support Shulk, if only because I think he looks damn cool and cute. If he is in, I am really curious as to how the Monado and Shulk's ability will be implemented, especially after seeing how creative Rosalina's Gravity Pull and Little Mac's "K.O meter" are. Anyway, I just wanted to say that I am a supporter, even though I don't have a Shulk picture in my signature (maybe I should put one). ;) Also, I want the "Gaur Plains" music to be in the game, so he being a rep helps, I guess. lol

Detractors going to detract. I'm not sure if this changes much. Not to say I'm against that, but I don't see this as a revelation. NCL recognizes it. It's more NOA who wants to put their head in the sand.

I honestly found that immensely amusing. I didn't know that was what the voice acting was, so it kind of threw me off when I first played it. Though I'd be surprised if they didn't keep his voice actors, outside of not using the Kirby anime ones I think they tend to keep the voice actors the same.

Regarding Shulk not being relevant in X, I think there's still a huge possibility he is if it turns out to be Xenoblade 2. We did see that face in the first trailer that looks awfully similar to him.

And this wouldn't be the first time the main protagonist would return. We have Marth returning in Awakening (sorta) and we also have Lloyd playable in Tales of Symphonia 2 (and might I add that he is a huge part of the story despite not being the main protagonist anymore). There are lots of signs pointing toward Shulk making a reappearance. Not going to lie, though, I have my doubts; they're very minimal, however.

I think it's pretty inaccurate to say there's lots of signs, it really is just that one clip with his face.

I don't think it's impossible, but there's really nothing to say it's likely.

I didn't necessarily say that there were a lot of signs, just that there's a good possibility that Shulk will make an appearance in X. Although, I guess that's something more objective and can be debated over.

I guess you're right by saying that just one clip isn't enough to say that Shulk is a shoe in. Maybe I'm just being a little optimistic here.

Well, you did literally use the phrase "lost of signs," so I was just going off of that haha.

After re-evaluating my top 5 most wanted newcomers and now that Little Mac is in the game (he was my most wanted newcomer), Shulk is currently my most wanted unconfirmed newcomer.

Xenoblade is a fantastic game and it deserves representation. Hopefully we will get that in this game. May we behold the power of the Monado soon!

I just hate how hard it is to really gauge Shulk's chances compared to other games. It's impossible to say that he's as likely as characters from any of the current cast of series because he's so new, but like-wise he's not exactly the Isaac of this game like some like to claim, because he's more popular and recent than Isaac was at the time of Pre-Braw.

Wish we had some sort of precedent for Sakurai adding a character from a basically brand new series, but honestly WFT is our newest addition and she's been around for a pretty long time compared to him.

Wii Fit released in 2007, while Xenoblade released in 2010, so only a few years difference.

Smash 4 seems to be setting many precedents.
WFT- Sakurai goes on the record saying he added a character he knows no one wanted. (Biggest troll move ever)
Villager- Sakurai goes against his previous statement of not wanting to make an AC rep
Little Mac- Sakurai turns an assist trophy into a playable character
Rosalina- Sakurai must have done something new with this curve ball of a character (I'm all for her though)

Shulk... - Adding a character from a very recent series?

As we have seen, there is always a first for everything.

Yeah I suppose Smash 4 is in a lot of ways a game of firsts. I am hopeful for Shulk, it's just hard to explain why sometimes haha.

On the topic of X, are you guys expecting a return of the Monado? So far I don't think we've seen any evidence of it. Honestly I'll miss the whole future mechanic if something similar isn't implemented. The novelty of the visions never wore off for me, although I wasn't a fan of the music changing to that inferior song when something as epic as "You will know our names" was playing.

Similarly, most of my friends thought X was some sort of Monster Hunter esque game. I know the combat will be more complex and is said to build on Xenoblade, but I hope it doesn't drastically change.

My last thought seeing the trailer is piloting the mechs (even though this was previously revealed) looks awesome. I wonder how limited or restricted the usage of them will be.

I'm with you on the visions mechanic. That was one of my favorite things about the game so I'm really hoping there will be something similar, though it's doubtful that we'll see the Monado again.

The combat doesn't seem to have changed much other wise. The mechs add a bit of altitude to the fights, but apart from that I don't see how anyone could see it being Monster Hunter-esque. I guess maybe if you've played one and not the other.

I personally thought the vision cutscenes annoyed me alot, I just hope there's a fast forward button if it comes back.

I hope that the visions return. I am not so sure if the Monado will…
I liked the visions mechanic as it told me when my partner was going to die and I could do something to save the future. It made the game feel unique and fresh throughout. However, I didn't like how the music changed.

Just had a thought upon looking at some Little Mac trailer analysis...

It's pretty clear that Bamco's experience with fist-fighters must've had some influence in putting together his moveset and playstyle, so I just kinda wonder if their experience with making different sword users actually feel totally different in Soul Calibur could be a boost to Shulk's chances or at least help to make even his sword based attacks feels fresh.

Drawing from his actual repertoire of moves of course, I just mean as far as their properties and probably tilts which tend to be nothing special.
