Hey fellow Smashers and fans of Guilty Gear. I looked in the official game thread and stuff and couldn't find if there was a Guilty Gear thread dedicated to the entire series instead of just one. So, what do you guys like about the series? What got you into it?

I personally was drawn into it when i first heard the song 'Holy Orders.' I thought that if the song was that awesome. the game must be good. So one of my friends told me he had it and I played it at his house and fell in love. I recently purchased a used copy of Guilty Gear X and look forward to playing the rest.

So, here we are to discuss stuff.

-What got you into Guilty Gear
-You favorite characters
-Websites with pics, videos, downloads, anything cool?
-Strategies for characters
-anything about Guilty Gear :)

www.dustloop.com is basically the site to go to for all your GG needs.

As technical and as advanced as Smash is, I really have to say that GGXX is probably even more complex and technical. I've literally spent at least 2 years trying to learn the general mechanics, and I've only recently gotten it down. Things like corner pressure, mixup, crossover, and oki really don't exist in Smash, so it took some time for me to learn them.

I use Sol and Bridget mostly. Sol because he's the Ryu of GGXX and easy to learn (he does sick damage in GGXX/) and Bridget because I find his potential midscreen/corner lockdown with Roger Rush combined with yo-yo return/buffers pretty crazy. It's too bad he's generally considered non-tournament worthy, though some people (mostly Ruu) take him pretty far.

And dude, you have to get with the program. >_> GGX is so. . .old. The people who play this competitively (not me, of course) are like 4 iterations past the GGX version. It went from GGX -> GGXX -> GGXX#Reloaded -> GGXX/ -> GGXX^C.

Guilty Gear XX or #R aer the one you should be playing. And that's only if you can't import Slash or ^C.

I'm a Dizzy fan, I'm also partial to Bridget and Bacon, Faust is a screw around character.

I don' play enough though, so I can't do FRC ice spike combos. I'ts all about oki with Dizzy.

If you'd like to get started right away, go with Slash for the time being just to get a feel for the gameplay engine. But if you can wait, get Accent Core when it comes out and just go from there.

Assuming that GamerGuitarist7 is devoted enough to GGXX to actually import the game from Japan, plus mod his PS2.

Yeah, dustloop.com is EXTREMELY non-n00b friendly, but mostly because GGXX is really complex to begin with. The problem is (I'm guessing) that you've never played a traditional 2D fighter before, so very, very basic stuff like mixup/crossover/rushdown/corner lockdown/oki is probably foreign to you.

Well, that was my situation, anyways. Just start out with the stickied topics they have explaining terms and everything, pick Sol (he's very basic), and watch matches on youtube. Eventually, you'll start to understand the fighter lingo those guys speak. FRC Gunflame rushdown ftw!

But yeah, stop playing GGX and get GGX2, at the very least. . .or #Reloaded for the XBox. GGX doesn't even have half the character roster of X2, and stuff like burst and FRC isn't in there. So old. . .but feel free to talk about GGXX here anytime. Not enough GGXX'ers in this place.

If you have a PS2, play GGXX. If you have a Xbox, play GGXX #R. Bot hare gonna be far better than GGX.

BTW DIzzy is so top tier

(If you're talking about canon related tiers. . .)

GG is good. SO is Street Fighter (especially Third Strike and SF II Turbo; check out SF ANniversary or CCC2)

There's also King of Fighters, XI and 02 and 98 seem to be the popular ones.

Garou Mark of the Wolves if you want an unappreciated game.

There's lots of em.

I've been playing guilty gear dust striker on the DS, Thats the first and only GG game I've Played, but Im trying to find one of the ps2 GG, I got into GG while I was at Kumoricon, The art was awsome, so I bought and tried it out, From what I've heard though, The Dust Strikers isnt as good as any of the console ones but, I still really like it which is why im getting a console version

Oh and Guilty Gear Dust strikers is basically GG turned into smash, its four players and it has items in it...even a bat and bomb.

I'm about to but GGX2 off ebay.

It's going to cost me 41.04 total. >_<
Guilty Gear XX is still selling for that much on EBAY of all places? Holy ****. That's now much I paid for it when it first came out. :\ What's going on here? I intend to pre-order Accent Core.

As for Dust Strikers, I didn't really like it all that much. It just reminded me too much of Isuka, which sucked. <.< If anything, I'd have gotten Judgement (Japanese version) because that came with Slash so I could play it portable if I wanted to.

In terms of other non-smash fighters, I would have to say that GG is one of the easier games to get into compared to the rest of the mainstream fighters. Note that I said get into, and not become competitive at. While the base system is certainly easy to learn, all of the extra tricks and timings are more than an extra step up.

I've been playing GG for about 2-3 years, but not competitively until just recently. / is a great deal of fun, but I can't really say I'm looking forward to ^C... it's almost like they're trying to turn it into MB, with a good portion of the changes. That, and I really dislike the new VAs.

Hey, a GG thread! Cool. =]

I imported a copy of Slash the day it came out in Japan and have had an inordinate amount of fun with it. Also, for those without an Xbox / don't want to muck around with their PS2's... you can also get ahold of the PC version of #R. The music was downsampled a lot to get it to fit onto one CD (!), but the game looks and plays great, even on keyboard.

But yeah, full-time Millia player here. I've mucked around with I-No and Eddie to some extent as well, but I think my plate's more than full just learning how to apply all of Millia's tools. Her air combo skills look absolutely ridiculous in AC, I can't wait. :D

Though TBH, it feels like people should start out with 3s or another less complex 2d fighter first to get the fundamentals down. Lord knows how many GG players I've run into who can't even hit-confirm properly. Also, it helps that there's so much documentation out there for Street Fighter games and many of the terms/application carry over to GG.

Yeah, I totally agree with Exmachina about starting off with a less-complex fighter. I jumped right into GGXX as my first traditional 2D fighter, and I was completely lost for about a year or so. In retrospect, I wish I had started off with something a bit simpler.

What fighter would you guys suggest I learn if I wanted to go back and learn the basics? I've heard that SF Super Turbo is supposed to be good for that, but the lack of smooth animations and general slowness really throw me off. . .I was considering Alpha 3, but there apparently isn't much love for that. And then there's 3S, but I've heard it's complicated.

So yeah. . .anyways, the VA for ^C really do suck. The announcer is terrible. Baiken sounds like an old grandma. Bridget actually sounds annoying. Sol sounds. . .okay. It's a good thing that you can actually select the old VA set. Hooray.

If you wanna go totally back to the basics, then its ST and nothing else since that's the game that started everything. Btw, CCC2 ST >>> Anniversary ST.

You could also try Melty Blood: Act Cadenza, it's a bit simpler than GGXX. The scene is smaller though.

Oh man, the days of GGX2....Johnny being able to bust out half life+ combos with NO tension. lol Slayers bite infinite...Sol's easy dust loop. I think about those days from time to time. Hehe. I just recently got GGX+ to add to my collection. It's pretty hard to find. Glad I managed to get it when I did. Though there was this one time where I passed up the chance of getting the very first Guilty Gear for only a buck. :(

It's NOT happening.

On a side not, for those of you who have #Reload on your pc, here's a patch that allows you to play online and have access to color edit mode.

http://www.sendspace.com/file/zht28p

Now I haven't had any success with the netplay mode myself but from what I hear, it's not worth it in any way shape or form. The netplay code and lag is so bad that it's **** near impossible to land an FRC. My suggestion, avoid it like the plague if you're actually trying to get better at GG in general. Lately I've just been having a lot of fun with the color edit. I'll post a few of my colors when I'm finished with them.

If you want some ideas for how to do Ky combos in GGX, then take a look at this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MYVY4JfmQw0
It's the only video on youtube showcasing Ky combos in GGX afaik. The youtube quality sucks so you might want to download the full version since there's a link in the description.

I played the hell out of GGX2 Reload. But not competitively or anything, it just wasn't that fun that way, I want to be able to play with my friends easily and not be so technical. But I really love the game, I mained Axl.

lol I made those combos. :p

Guilty Gear mode makes the gameplay engine even faster. If it looks fast, then GG mode makes it even faster. Additionally every move becomes jump cancellable and it's possible to do air dashes really close to the ground which pretty much makes it possible to do infinite combos with every character. Definitely not the mode that you want to learn for competitive Guilty Gear but it's there for fun.

That's his robot version. Unfortunately in GGX, there's no way to play normal Ky with GG mode on. In the later games it's possible though.

Ky collects teacups. >_> And FRCs are quite hard; and then there's other random crap like jump install. I think it's cancelling a normal into a jump so you can cancel the move with a jump or make it so you don't jump???

Yay,I just got my copy of GGX2 in the mail today,and it's great...but Ky's FRC's drive me insane.:psycho:

I'm going to try to unlock some of the other stuff.^^
WHEEE! Ky's frc's aren't that hard with a little practice. Trust me. Good luck unlocking stuff because missions were a ***** in that game. x_ X I can't believe I put myself through all that.

As for jump install, jump install is performed by pressing any upward direction on your pad (or stick) when you use a jump cancellable move during a string. The string prevents you from jumping so that you can use it for later. There's a few applications of jump install in that video I posted earlier. In some of those clips, you see me using my double jump during a super jump (which normally isn't possible). But jump install makes that possible. ;) You can also use it for some wacky pressure strings as well.

And as far as Ky goes in GGX2, he has some nice colors but combo-wise, he didn't really gain much in the transition from GGX -> GGX2 aside from Sacred Edge which is great for extending combos. He got Greed Sever though which is a much better move than Crescent Slash because it can avoid moves and hit the opponent. Oh yeah, his standing HS animation is better too, no more swinging it like a wand (wtf did they do that in the first place?).
