How does one do it? Do I need multiple controllers?

No, what you do is you press B so that it goes back to the menu, but you also click the name thing and press A to go to name entry. You have to time it to where it tries to do both at once. It's a very specific timing.

You can also use this glitch to play as Master Hand. It's useful for Event 51.

rofl I never thought about abusing that glitch in event mode. I used it to get the Cruel Melee stuff though, I believe all the kills go to Mario iirc

so is the only difference the controller port or something (I forget how to do the masterhand glitch... iirc it needed to be 3rd controller port?)

It needs to be in the 3rd controller port to use his moves. The difference is with M.Hand you don't choose a character and do the name entry glitch, whereas you do pick a character (with no opponent) to play alone.

Yeah, each character is assigned a number. When you don't pick a character, it defaults to 00 which is Master Hand.
