To becoming a "good" Fox?
Don't do anything unnecessary.
play good players, and don't just try to win, see what you're doing wrong and fix that.

To help Silent out: I think he means stick to the basics, especially seeing that you are fairly new. A lot of Fox's(including myself) go out of there way to do crazy unnecessary moves/tactics when the basic will take you a long way. Refine things such as Shffling>Shine/Jab/Grab, Upthrow>UpAir, Neutral Airs, oh and more Neutral Airs! These things coupled w/ a smart, observant mindset will make a fox to be reckoned w/ IMO.

It won't happen over night, put some work in.

secret to fox =D never get grabbed and grab as much as possible. easy win. way to many characters can punish fox with grabs half the cast can cg him and if they can't they can usually tech chase him with a ricockulous combo. its easier said then done tho i suppose

to add on to what PC said, a good thing to do is wait for your opponent to **** up and go in with either neutral + shine + grab, or just grab to up air.

good ppl usually don't f up but assuming your not playing m2k or ken or something that might work. vs better players who are constantly moving around u have to predict where they'll be . a good example might be a marth sitting in his shield. at first your like "what an idiot" *short hop fastfalls nair* but yeah a good marth would probably wait for you to approach and wavedash back out of shield and you'd most likely get grabbed. a lot of the time with fox i end up aiming my attacks like a good bit farther behind where my foe is. this works for dash dancing campers too just overshoot all your attacks and usually you can hit them. and if u land behind them... well no harm done u missed your attack but your not getting punished either so back to square one.

grab combos are the most important thing imo. there's a lot more than just up throw up air. For example if a marth or sheik DI the up throw forward at around 25/35dmg u can usually combo weak nair or bair to uptilt and follow up from there. Dont be afraid to experiment this in friendlies , theres a lot more then the usual up throw up air.

i mean a good player at this point wont just sit there and let u grab them they'll probably roll away or just dash into a safer spot.
At high level play this gets ridiculously deep because the player is expecting you to overshoot your attacks so you almost have to lure them to the edge where they can't move around as much. this could also be a double edged sword . luring them to the edge is great because it sets you up for a lot of kills because duh they're near the edge easy gimp shine kills ect. but as all you fox players have come to know.... fox is easily gimped. once he's off the edge he's extremely easy to kill so you'd have to be careful. this is just my style of play for the most part, i usually dashdance around to lure them towards the edge then i try to pressure them as much as possible .

I think this way when I play Marth & Fox...and I actually tell it to a lot of other smashers. I also have a similar mindset when using my Falco & Shiek (to focus on one thing Mainly [such as trying to avoid grabs and grab as much as possible]).

When you're playing smash, and you're searching for ways to get in a grab, you'll see More ways to get in grabs than usual, improving your grab-game. But the thing is, there's a lot more to it than just grabbing, as putting the cake in the oven isn't the only thing you do when baking a cake. Making the grab Worthwhile or setting up the grabs in creative and effective ways is the extension to the mindset.

Over here we talk about pro smashers sometimes (over here in NorCal), and we always come to the conclusion that the pro smashers (or at least what we Know in our minds to be Very pro [whether or not they're this good]), is that all pro smashers do the best thing they can within that MATCH, NOT SITUATION. What I mean by that is, the best thing to do in a certain situation -- omg I'm straying off topic -- is not necessarily always the best thing to do in a match when trying to keep in mind The Opponents Cognition Processes thus degrading impressive 'mind-games'. In other words, keeping your mind open opens way for improvement.

Attending college dulls the mind, prevents the mind from authentic creativity.

Uh...Fox Essentials hm?

Oh! With Fox, I like to spam nairs and bairs with L-Cancels & Shines. I also make sure to take advantage of his blazing speed and be aggressive within a distance. I put up my dukes and get really close but within range to be safe, then punch punch jab jab hook hook and get back in the 'really close but within range to be safe' area.

:)
