Today’s Dojo update confuses and confounds. Unlike most updates, this one is very cryptic, and Sakurai helpfully files his post under “Game Modes” and “???”.

The update appears to start out with something reminiscent of the opening to Melee, with Mario being tossed into an arena as a trophy; here, however, we see him fighting Kirby, and then a peculiar twist: a handshake.

This isn’t the most confusing bit, though—not by a long shot. Sakurai says that in the Smash world, trophies only know how to fight, and being unable to fight is akin to death. So, perhaps with the above as your bit of foreshadowing, we see the ominous sight of Meta-Knight’s ship appear from the skies, and then… well, this thing:

In truth, you might just want to read this one on your own—it is, truthfully, hard to sum up something that’s intentionally so vague and cryptic, and it’s also much heavier on pictures than text. (If you can’t see the text, try highlighting the page—I think that this is just a formatting issue and not another clue, since the UK version of the page has a black background for the post, and the text shows up there.)
In any event, this post will undoubtedly fuel a whole slew of new speculation. Is this an attempt to (finally) add a backstory to Smash Bros. Brawl? Perhaps some of our wishes will come true, and Meta-Knight’s ship descending on Kirby will foreshadow some sort of true single-player mode (this post is filed under Game Modes, remember) where each character fights his own boss at the end–Mario against Bowser, Kirby against Meta-Knight, Link against Ganondorf… Samus against Ridley? And what exactly is that thing in the last picture? Could it be the successor to the wireframes? A partner to the hands? Or just some obscure character from a game I don’t recognize? Let us know what you think, and maybe over the weekend we’ll revisit this update.
