I've never heard anything about this, and I figured it would actually be a cool idea. I have a very limited idea of how fantasy football works (from what I can tell, you draft a virtual team, and you get points depending on how each player you chose performs; player with most points wins). If anyone with more knowledge of the subject could come up with a reasonable structure for a Fantasy Melee League, I have a feeling it would really catch on. Obvious advantages are generating more hype, and I also think it would help some of the lower skilled players still fighting to reach "pro" status get more recognition. If you have more knowledge about up-and-coming Smashers, you are more likely to make some good draft picks towards the end of the draft. I also feel like this is a good time to start something like this because of Pound 5 right around the corner. I'm assuming we could get a list of people entering, everyone picks a player within certain intervals of seeding, and then we assign points based on how they perform. The hardest part will probably be keeping track of what happens because most matches will not be recorded, which would probably limit the league to only recorded matches unless players feel like recording what happened themselves (unlikely). Regardless, just going off of the recorded matches of even just the top 16 or so players would be entertaining. Just for some simple examples, award points for these:
4 stock = 50 points
JV 4 stock = 40 points
3 stock = 30 points
0-death combo = 30 points
survive to 150% (i.e. be standing on the stage) = 15 points
gimp below 25% = 10 points
win on a salty counterpick = 10 points
taunt without getting hit = 5 points
I really have no idea how those point values would play out, but you get the idea. I could come up with a bunch of cool things for points, as I'm sure the rest of the community could. Like I said, I don't really know enough about fantasy sports leagues to actually do this. I just think it'd be an awesome way of generating hype and keeping people interested in Melee in general.
