Falcon and the degenerative nature of it all.

Yeah, I know lengthy thread name.

Anyways, I've gone through my fair share of characters, using them as "mains" at one time or another, but i'm addicted to the satisfying nature of pulling off the perfect combo and that's what falcon allows me to do.

Since i've started playing falcon I notice some of the other chars I used to be good with have become worse (most notably my marth, but i'll say more on that in a sec). I have been focusing primarily on falcon for a solid month and have learning pretty much everything advanced about smash since last semester and am still working on incorporating that into actual play (i.e. I can wavedash, but how do I use that to help me in a match?) and I'm still getting better at it.

My question to you is do you think that focusing on one character, acquiring the muscle memory for his timing, and learning combos/strategies for all of his matchups/stages can lead to your other characters getting worse?

So, my marth got worse, but I'm ok with that. I feel like the difference between marth and CF is astronomical, and swapping between each on the fly is insane. Though, I'd really only like my marth to step in on matchups that CF has difficulty on. Is this possible and/or a good idea? Is Marth even a good counter for matchups that CF has trouble with or should I be spending time working on another char?

<3 CF boards. Impart the wisdom.

Incorporating wavedashing can come simply by using it with dash dancing and spacing for edgeguarding down tilts sometimes. I honestly don't think that will make your characters bad per say, but if you go so long without using them then yeah that'll do it. It's just a matter of your brain capacity for memory, some people can remember more than others. My secondary is actually marth, but I find it easy to switch out between the two..

I guess what i'm trying to say is that it really depends on the person overall.

As for setups that give falcon trouble, that probably falls into priority which substituting marth in exchange for seems like a good solution to me.

I agree with psychoace that it depends on the person...but yes the differences between marth and cf are pretty vast. I usually have a secondary to use against tougher characters in high end matchups...either falco or doc...so it won't hurt to practice with marth as well. It might feel awkward to you, but if you like the character that shouldn't stop you. Just spend a solid amount of time practicing matchups that you think you'd rather use your marth in instead of CF so you won't be totally in the dark when you want to pull out marth sometime in the future.

Maybe at this point, switching between marth and CF will seem difficult to you. But once you fully incorporate SHFFLs and other advanced techs into your gameplay, it becomes vastly easier to switch between characters because in advanced play, the advanced techniques apply to all characters. The timing is just slightly different between them.

TLDR: Your marth may be deteriorating now, but once you reach a certain threshold, your practice with captain falcon will "drag him up to your current general skill level" or so to say.

pshhh i used falcon for like 4 months straight and im a beast with him. then after i got him down, i started to mess around with fox falco bowser marth shiek samus jiggs link ganon mario and pichu. maybe others too. but im saying that im a beast with those suckas to. like the dude above me said shhfls apply to all characters so its easy. you just have to learn each characters individuality if thats a word. each character has their own style and way to play. learn that and your good. youll just keep getting better with more practice.

I ****ing love ****.
I play Falcon/Ganon and it's GREAT having 2 mains that are basically clones, because you can take stuff from one character and use it on the other.

One note on the wavedashing thing is, if you roll to the edge to edgehog it's great to dash forward and wavedash back to slide off the edge...something that can be used with every character. I use this alot because I'll sometimes airdodge off, so why not just move forward and then slide off?

Yeah, your sources are worng, its completly OK, and even appreciated to Falcon Punch someone IRL, just make sure its an actual Falcon Punch, and you may ask, how do i know if its genuine?, well, easy stuff, if you see the fire eagle comming out of your fist or if the recivier gets launched many meters away from you, then its a true Punch.

I feel the same way Stewie. I started with falco about 3 months ago when I first started learning the advanced techs. But I've fallen in love with falcon's playstyle and have been playing him almost exclusively for the past 3-4 weeks. Since then I've felt a decrease in my falco's effectiveness. I hope that subsides with more practice, though. It's good to know that other people have the same problem as i do

I have switched back and forth between main during all stages of my smash life. Because of this it is quite easy for me to switch between pretty much ever decent character, but like most of you captain falcon is my fav to play but I find I am way more effective at gheying people with my marth.

Oh and about wave dashing, who needs it when you can moonwalk. =D So much sexier.
