I have to agree with a handful of lovely people in this thread. It would be really easy to implement for a lot of characters, like Mario, Sonic and Kirby.

But there are too many characters that are characteristically stoic (Rosalina, Wii Fit Trainer) or don't even have visible faces (Samus, R.O.B., Game & Watch). It's not impossible, but it could be kind of tricky and maybe not worth the effort. Besides, Smash seems to go a "one-size fits all" route when it comes to details like this. It's why all the characters in SSE were mute: it was less strange for the chattier characters to stay silent than it would have been for the mute characters to suddenly speak.

That said, I'd actually really like this idea to be implemented. Anything that adds even more personality to this game the better, I just don't see the dev team spending too much time on it.

I really like this idea, it'd be a great way to make up for how lazy Sakurai's team was in Brawl using the same artwork like 50 times.

Not hard at all.

Character Name: Angry/Hurt/Psyched up/Defeated

Rosalina: Messy hair/Hurt/Sparkle in her eye/Eyes shut
Wii Fit Trainer: Hair unbound/Wince/Thumbs up/Exhaustion
Samus: Lit visor/Cracked visor/Arm cannon held up/Looking away, helmet removed
R.O.B: Red eyes, slits half-shut/Head tilted, sparks coming out/Glowing eyes/Powered down
G&W: G&W holds up signs that say things like "OW!"

Any other characters you would like me to knock out of the park?

Honestly, I don't like this idea. Seems too distracting. I think Smash is hectic enough already; casual players have a hard enough time just figuring out what's happening, let alone with constantly changing character portraits cycling at the bottom of the screen. The HUD is supposed to give the player the info they need in a quick glance without interfering with their vision of the actual fight. This idea would just naturally direct your eye to a place you don't want it. When it comes to a HUD, efficiency is key.

Yet tales games have this feature and everyone loves those games.

Exactly, It's not like it'd be impossible to shut these off in options if you don't like them, anyway. It's just a nice creative touch that i believe adds a lot more personality to the game.

He is like Bane, so much expression in the eyes. You can really interpret that emotional connection, and it really conveys that feeling upon the viewer. So many faces for such a little guy. :smirk:
I would say more like Spider-Man. He tends to emote a lot with his eyes.

Irrelevant. You need to look down there to monitor your life, anyway, which takes much longer to digest.

What is more is if there are only like five or so faces for each character, it's not like the player will be losing anything for not catching the face, and they will inherently prioritize the action.

May as well say no stage should have background elements ever, if we are going to deprive flavour from the product just because of an absolutely minute beginning experience that very, very, very few players will suffer from. Most people will either notice it on their first match, or completely miss it and notice it way later.
So Mr. G&W would take a page from Wile E. Coyote with the signs.
Yes! I got the idea from Judgment.
