No it's not a major franchise but it's not a minor franchise either like Mother, Animal Crossing, Pikmin or Custom Robo. It's not quite as popular as series such as Legend of Zelda, Mario or Pokemon but it's defiantly second shelf along with Donkey Kong, Metroid and F-Zero.

I feel that MOTHER deserves at least 2 characters total, and I'd rather not see Ness take up that valuable slot when he's a clone of Lucas. I want Sakurai to use an entirely unique MOTHER character for that spot (Poo,Kumatora,Jeff or the Maskedman).

Number of games, fanbase and sales. Starfox has few games, large fanbase and great sales. Mother has few games, a loyal but average sized fanbase and average sales. Animal Crossing and Pikmin are same as Starfox.

Of course, however at the time of NES era, when almost all of RPG's were centered around Dragon's, magic and sword fighting Mid evil based, MOTHER was quite game breaking during that era for taking a modern twist on things. (It even could be argued with the release of Earthbound outside of Japan).
