Down Throw Follow ups (Vids Included)

Ok after a long break from brawl I went to a tourney and during some friendlies, alot of things started making sense.

Hopefully its common knowledge that Luigi's best damage building throw is his down throw. What I realized is that it can be a good KO set up and just all around great mind game throw.

There are SO many options after a down throw, and they are very rewarding depending on how good you are at reading your opponent. So for this thread I'm going to name the options for follow ups after a down throw. (BTW I found the easiest way to land a grab is after a jab)

1) Down throw to Down throw (AKA pseudo chain grabbing.)

This one has become one of my favorites. Most of the time after a Down throw your opponent will air dodge and hit the ground. This is how you punish them for that. This mostly works at lower percentages ofcourse. After a while they will not air dodge after the down throw and this leads to my other option.

2) Down throw to aerials.

This of course is for when you think your opponent wont air dodge. My personal favorite aerial to follow up a down throw with is up airs. They come out REALLY fast and leave little openings for your opponent to attack/move etc.

3) Down throw to charged up smash.

I love this one. Most of the time it wont matter if your opponent air dodges or not. Predict where they will DI and charge an up smash that way. After an air dodge they are at your mercy and have to sit and wait for it to hit them. This is good for damage racking and KOing. Lucky for us Luigi mains that this kills metaknight fairly fast :).

I have some vids of me doing these also from a tourney.

Tourney match vs Ankoku's Marth (Lost the set barely. Watch out for well spaced marths people lol)

Yup so there you have it. Just wanted to show people some set ups I learned since I don't post here enough. I hope you all can implement this and lets all win some tournaments with Luigi!!

Its good to see you playing again, you were one of the few good Luigi players out there that ACTUALLY GOES TO TOURNAMENTS. I honestly was disappointed with Ankoku's Marth, but that might have just been a bad match for him or a great match for you. Anyway I do Dthrow to hyphen Usmash a ton, and I like how you knew he would air dodge so you waited before you let your nair go. Also, I think you're the only Luigi player I've seen that jabs even close to as much as I do. Its sooo goooood. :D

Yea I've noticed there's a lack of Luigi players who go to tournaments. Or people just don't want to play Luigi.

Ankoku's Marth is better than how he played that match. He won the set after all. He has a very well spaced marth and uses the up + b out of shield very well.

Lol @ abusing jabs. I believe a luigi player should jab very frequently. It is very scary to be jabbed by him for fear of your life so it throws yout opponent off. It also can lead to Up + B and throw opportunities TOO GOOD!!!!

I've watched every video from TheMann over 20 times each before I started watching others play Luigi. So thanks! I would love to attend a tournament with Luigi and test my down throw combos but I have no idea where these tournaments are. I live in New York can anyone help me? Sorry if this post is in the wrong thread. I really dig your tips Mann. I shall utilize them all the next time I play Brawl.

Np I hope my tips can help. I just want people to know Luigi is a force to be reckoned with. We all just have to start winning tourneys.

As for tournaments. You live in New York so you should try looking in the Atlantic North section of the regional zones part of the site. They should have nearby tourneys there for you.

Link to Atlantic North section: http://www.smashboards.com/forumdisplay.php?f=90

Hope that helped :)

I'd love to go to tourneys, but I live in BC ,Canada. There's NEVER a tournament over here *sigh*. I don't want to travel across half the world to get to a tourney lol.

That down throw is my favorite set up for like...any move lol.

Nice going love this. Saw the Mk vid, your luigi's really calm and spacing too I like it almsot similar to mine too. Your jab game is total **** hands down lol.

Post this in Alias's table of contents
Posted it.

And yea spacing is key since Luigi doesn't have much range. Also I was thinking of another downthrow set up randomly today. I was thinking after the down throw, you wait for your opponent to air dodge then Jab Up + b them since when your opponent is in the air they cant shield the up + b. I don't know if I explained it well but I hope people know what Im talking about lol.

Somebody should test it out for me and tell me if its possible or not, since I don't have a Wii.

As for the Dthrow thing, you can always name it pusedo chain grabbing, (i've landed like 4-5dthrows following DI but it was nubcakes lol). or call it airchasing. Basically Dthrows goes into anything, but i was leaning on trying a sliding fsmash too.

Yea good name for it Pseudo Chaingrabbing. I'm gonna edit that in there.

Also a Sliding F smash might work too. Man the possiblities with down throw are almost endless.

Good stuff.

My favorite thing to use is after a dthrow is a dair. Since thats probably the easiest place to spike with it, and people NEVER see it coming. You can really do bad things to someone when you throw them that far off guard.

Like the vids, do you have any more of your recent stuff?

And yes, dthrow to jab upb is definetly doable. I'm not sure if they fall to the ground or can shield it, since I don;t have a partner handy.

Dthrow utilt juggling works on some characters on lower %s like snake. I might take back the sliding fsmash, but it should be a good 30%+ maybe? Oh and dthrow to jab shoryuken i think it works hilariously on jiggs cuz she dies around 37%s lolz.

Dthrow is probably one of his best versatile throws.

Dthrow is ****, but its nice to mix it up with Bthrow on occassion. Bthrow kills at ~140% if you need it to, and does great damage when fresh. Don't want to get too predictable now do we :D

yeah i noticced taht a whielkago in luigi aldders i would always be teh first one to get the otehr guy above 120%, but i struggled killing them cuz the were to aware of f-smash upb and upsmash. so i just learned to sheild grab-backthrow when tehre up at high percents. fun times.

That's what this whole thread is about. There are enough dthrow mixups to avoid being predictable. Lking, pshh, pay more attention :chuckle:

Luigi has every option in the world for a KO. Like, seriously, all of them.

Hey I know this thread is kinda old, but I thought of the best D-throw set up that came to me in a dream or something lol. Nah I thought of it b4 but forgot about it.

Anyways downthrow to up angled f-smash. Although it is harder to land after a downthrow than upsmash it will kill MUCH earlier. Especially if its charged a little I believe it can kill game and watch at like 60%(b4 the smash of course) and Metaknight pretty low also. Those characters deserve to die as early as possible.

I had a dream that Sandbag was a playable character. I had to clean myself up in the morning.
>_>
<_<

Anyway, if they DI... go for a Hyphen Smash. Odd how I just posted about it in another thread, and here it is again.

If they have dAir Spikes (like the Links' and G&W), prepare to Spot Dodge and FJP.

Thanks I try lol. I wish we could have played while I was home for break but guess things didn't work out. But you live in Michigan like me. You should come out to one of the upcoming tourneys so we can play in person.
