ESFP

Main: Fox
Secondaries: Sonic, Falco, Sheik, Toon Link

I believe that I play these characters because I prefer/ enjoy being very mobile and having a lot of options. As an ESFP, I am a personality that seeks freedom and creativity, and is much more likely to spontaneously think of ideas on the spot and "cross that bridge when I get there" rather than to plan my tactics methodically in a very static way.

Toon Link was my first Project M main, and looking back, I definitely just played to whatever situation arose at the time rather than carefully thinking about a plan and methodically executing it. I play a bit differently now, since I realized the many weaknesses of playing that style, but the general concept remains the same as it just flows out of who I am as a person.

So I'm super intrigued to review the results of this study actually. I wish birthdates were also a field in this survey too, but nevertheless, I made a mistake.

Made it to question 3 and tried to double-back because I thought it was a repeat question. Thought I could just go back and re-submit the entire survey. But now you've got at least one incomplete data sample. Hopefully incomplete samples will be disregarded. I'll resubmit my data from a different location later, but perhaps a different surveying tool would avoid issues like this.
That limitation is due to the way that I structured the survey, not necessarily the fault of the surveying tool itself. Sorry about that.

However, I accounted for this kind of thing and I made it so that only the most recent entry from a given IP is considered. It only stops you from trying the test if you have a particular cookie on your browser, so using an incognito window will allow you to try the test again.

In response to Umbra's query, I know the basic, most fundamental reason for my maining of Ivy is this - she's a Pokemon. In 64, I played Pika. In melee, i mained Pika as well. In brawl, Pika/PT?Lucario. Growing up, Pokemon was huuuuge for me and I gravitated towards it in every concievable aspect of my life. Now, I'm sure that now even in my "adult" life, that affinity carries over in at least some small amounts, resulting in my affection for all things Pokemon. But beyond that, I think another big reason I play Ivy is, as other INTP/J's have elaborated on, that she's one of the most unique characters in this game, let alone all of smash. One of I think 2 or 3 quadrupedal characters in the entire series of games, satisfying aerial/smash sweetspots, really great spacing game, tether recovery (now thankfully not complete ass, ty based PMBR), of course the LAZOR, and she has a spike which also has that sweet popping healing noise when conected with. As for raw tactical attractions, I really enjoy her spacing/set up game. Throw projectiles/bairs until you compromise the opponents options to the point where you have an oppening to engage. Her combo game is also really satisfying, somewhat less so now with the lack of ensured combos into up b.

I guess some of these things could be carried over into my reasoning for Mewtwo, Lucario, and Zard. I picked them up initially due to their being Pokemon, then really found I enjoyed their playstyles. More than anything, I think i find pulling of "custom combos" immensely satisfying, and all of these characters have the potential for just that.

Some people treat the MBTI like an irrefutable truth machine proving who you really are, seriously--if you haven't met anyone like that, count yourself lucky. That's all I'm really trying to avoid here lol

I'm out, not *really* trying to make a fuss, just wanted to throw all that stuff on the table, enjoy taking a gander the eventual infographic
The concepts are fine, if you can actually figure out what your type is it's helpful. MBTI relies on stereotypes to figure this out though which isnt scientifically accurate, its a commercialization of Jung's work.

...kind of.

After several hours of working on the data compilation, it became evident that I wouldn't be finishing all of this by tonight. I decided it would be a better idea to present the data one piece at a time. I'll first start out with the important stuff, but eventually I'll be presenting a better analysis of the raw data in as many ways as I can think of.

To put things in perspective, the amount of complete entries ended up totaling to 2,074. Thank you all for your participation!

Updated the main post with data for personality type distribution!

Right now I'm typing up the calculations I made for the specific characters that certain personality types prefer. I'll be releasing these one personality type at a time, starting with the most common ones and going down the list until I finish the last one.

This is where things start getting interesting. Stay tuned for more!

I've completed the analysis of character preference for INTPs, but you'll need to understand a few things before you look at it:

[collapse="1. What is a 'Preference Factor'?"]
There are other character popularity charts and lists for each individual personality that can be found below. These are NOT the same as the chart and list you saw in the Character Popularity section not too long ago; these charts and lists are only using the data collected from people that are of the same type as a section's respective name. For example, the INTP section contains a chart and list for character popularity using only results given by people who labeled themselves as INTP during the course of the survey.

The second section that you'll see lists characters in descending order of their "preference factor." A preference factor represents how much a certain character's popularity was amplified or diminished when going from its "universal popularity" (i.e. the figure shown in the chart found in the Character Popularity section above this, which includes entrants of all personality types) to its "local popularity" (i.e. the chart that only includes entrants of a particular personality type).

Let's use Mario as an example. When we look at Mario's universal popularity in the chart from above, we can see that it is 3.2%. Now if we were to look at his local popularity for INTPs, we would see that his popularity there is 2.1% instead. This means that his popularity was diminished by a significant degree; in fact, it's only 65.6% of the value we saw for his universal popularity. This means his preference factor is 0.656, which is the quotient of his local popularity divided by his universal popularity. Consequently, he is listed at the very bottom of the preference hierarchy for INTPs since this is the lowest number (or at least the lowest reliable number, I'll go more into that once I get to 3) that was calculated when this number is compared to the preference factors for all of the other characters.

But wait a second; out of all 41 characters, Mario is still the 10th most popular main for INTPs! How can he be the 10th most popular character for that type if he's the least preferred?

First, let me explain what I mean by "preferred" in this situation. These statistics show that, in comparison to other players, those with the INTP personality type have a greater tendency to adopt one of the many other characters as their main. This does not necessarily mean that they dislike Mario (he could even be one of their secondaries), INTPs just tend to designate another character as their main more often than someone who has an unidentified personality type (AKA those who would defer to the universal popularity chart). Preference is a relative statistic that changes based on who you're comparing who with; in this case we are comparing INTPs with someone generic.

Preference factors are listed in pretty colors ranging from blue to red, where blue represents high preference and red represents low preference. Yellow is neutral preference.[/collapse][collapse="2. How does this apply to me?"]
I can already imagine some people thinking, "The character I main is <X> and these results show that people of the <Y> personality type don't main <X> very often, so I guess I must be playing the wrong character" or "I'm the only <X> main in my local scene and these results show that people main <X> very frequently, so all of this must be fraudulent." If you happen to be one of these people, you need to understand that minorities and majorities can appear to be very different depending on where you're looking at them from. In any case, none of this is supposed to prove anything or encourage you to change anything about the way you play this game or live your life.

Nothing is outside of the realm of possibility, which is why you'll see no 100%s or 0%s anywhere here. You should be proud to play the character you play, regardless of the circumstances.[/collapse][collapse="3. Why can't I find my character on some of these lists? And what are these asterisks about?"]Well... you'll actually find a couple of 0%s somewhere in here since there might not have been any entries for particularly rare character+personality pairings, which is admittedly quite fraudulent indeed; you can thank all of the people that didn't take this survey for that one.

I've taken the liberty of moving any instances where there are characters without any entries to a separate list that can be found directly beneath the primary one. Additionally, I've also taken out some instances where there isn't a big enough sample pool for some characters for their results to be reliable. This has led to a few characters not showing up on most of the main lists:

:diddy::popo::metaknight::olimar::pit::rob:

When these characters do end up appearing on a main list, it's usually for personality types without much of a reliable sample pool themselves. They are always accompanied with several asterisks, and this can mean different things depending on how many asterisks there are:

* One asterisk: This character has a base sample pool below 30, so the figure listed may be inaccurate. This character is still included on all main lists, but the figure listed by it should be acknowledged to be potentially unreliable.
Characters with one asterisk:
:dedede::dk2::jigglypuff::peach::pikachu2::yoshi2::zerosuitsamus:

** Two asterisks: This character has a base sample pool below 20, so the figure listed is probably inaccurate. This character will be excluded from most main lists except in cases where the personality type itself already lacks a reliable sample pool. Figures for this character are generally considered unreliable.
Characters with two asterisks:
:diddy::popo::rob:

*** Three asterisks: This character has a base sample pool below 10, which makes the figure listed completely inaccurate. This character is excluded from all main lists. The listed figure is probably hilarious.
Characters with three asterisks:
:metaknight::olimar::pit:[/collapse]

I've only finished INTP thus far, so the others will remain blank for now. I'm working on changing that right now.

INFP Ivysaur, which is weird, because the reason I picked up Ivysaur is the same reasoning given for why unconventional characters are chosen by INTP players; more specifically, I always like playing as newcomers for some reason; I was trying to train greninja or duck hunt as possible mains for a while before settling back on ROB, who I used casually in Brawl for the same reasons.

The reason I find this interesting is that I'm only one letter away from INTP (though I always get F on the test; I'm not borderline). I think that it would be worth considering writeups on the possible effects of individual letters. Maybe it won't be necessary, though, if the correlations are seen in later writeups.

also, I find it kinda funny that the least common personality type is the exact opposite of the most common.
Maybe im missing something, but to me that seems like it would be the expected outcome?

Like if it was

Apples - Oranges
Beer- Wine
Chocolate- Pies
Nintendo - Outside

and

OBCN was most popular,

id assume that it would be fairly likely that AWPO would be least popular.

Finished INTJ!

I added a bit of extra info on the color-coding system in the introduction to character preference:[collapse=PRETTYCOLORS.jpg]Preference factors are listed in pretty colors that vary based on how big the preference factor is:

Hot Pink - Outrageously high preference (1.8+)
Pink - Extremely high preference (1.7-1.8)
Violet - Incredibly high preference (1.6-1.7)
Blue - Very high preference (1.5-1.6)
Cyan - Significantly high preference (1.4-1.5)
Light Green - High preference (1.3-1.4)
Green - Considerable preference (1.2-1.3)
Chartreuse - Slight preference (1.1-1.2)
Yellow - Neutral preference (1.0-1.1)
Orange - Slightly low preference (0.9-1.0)
Red - Low preference (0.8-0.9)
Dark Red - Very low preference (0.6-0.8)
Brown - Extremely low preference (0.4-0.6)
Black - he ded (0.0-0.4)[/collapse]

I also updated the local popularity lists to include each character's preference factor along with their typical statistics.

like you need to know
I have the same understanding about finding satisfaction in being unconventional. My type was INTP, but the difference between that and INTJ isn't all that big. To me, the potential for widespread playstyle diversity is one of the most appealing qualities of Project M. It's one of few games where I've been rewarded for trying to be unique, but it's been the only game in which I've been rewarded enough for it to actually be comparable to using the more mainstream methods of play.

My preference for unconventionality manifests itself in several ways, but the most evident one comes from the fact that I play Mr. Game & Watch competitively. The sheer variety of uses that each of his moves carry is what makes him so appealing to me; his moves don't have sweetspots or sourspots, but they have sweet or sour "times" where the same move can range from being very strong to very weak the longer the hitbox stays out. Proper timing of these moves results in outstanding combos that are different every time. His neutral may be weak, but I've always preferred careful planning and setup for huge payoffs over ones that are drawn out over time. Additionally, the fact that nobody in my region has any idea what this character is supposed to do just makes it all the more satisfying to blather endlessly about his massive supply of unique features and quirks.

Thank you for bringing this up, this reminded me of the reason why I decided to keep the results hidden while the survey was still open. I had the same thought you did, so I knew that many people who play a particular character like to think that they are "special" because of it (and they often are when only considering their local environment). If I had the results visible while these people were still submitting entries, it could potentially discourage them from admitting who they really play if they get the impression that everybody and their mother plays the same thing. This could heavily affect the results of the survey since it would not accurately reflect the amount of people who play certain characters.

Speaking of which, the survey is closing TODAY at 12:00 PM (PST). If you or somebody you know has not yet submitted an entry, do it right this instant since you will not get a chance to do so afterwards. Once the survey has closed, I will begin working on crunching the numbers into a presentable format since they will have finally stopped changing. This could take a good deal of time, and I cannot guarantee that I will get all of it done until later tonight. Rest assured that the results will become public as soon as I am done with all of the compiling.

In the meantime, I'd like to see everyone's thoughts about what Umbra posted. Why do you think you play your character?
even though its closed can I do it anyway just 4 fun

ESFJ, Snake and Ike. Although this was mainly due to character loyalties and I didnt pick based on playstyle. Just picked who I wanted to play and adapted/grinded out to suit myself to their method of play.

INTP, Luigi main here

I think the main reason I picked luigi is because he was always my favorite of the two bros. Probably has to do with me being the younger of two brothers.

plus his antics are just too funny!

INFP soon perhaps? :3
I'd really like to assure you of that, but I don't think I could settle on anything more concrete than Soon™.

I've been neglecting this thread a lot ever since I finished INTP and INTJ, but I should be honest and own up to the fact that I bit off way more than I could chew with this project. The reason I stopped making progress on this was because I simply wasn't satisfied with the quality of the information I could pull together. This is partially because of how underrepresented certain minorities were, but for the most part I was struggling to pull anything meaningful out of the rest of the data that was collected.

That might sound like a huge let-down for you non-INTP/INTJ's out there, but I really don't think the quality of information would be anything worth seeing. Most of it is riddled with inconsistencies and unreliable figures due to the lack of representation for groups that were any smaller than those present in the more common groups, which were just barely sufficient for reliable data. It would be neither interesting for you nor rewarding for me to process, so it doesn't really seem worth the time it'd take to do.

Right now I've got some other projects in the works that are currently of higher priority, so I'd like to get those done before coming back to this. I have plans to come back to this one at some point, but I don't think I could feasibly do that anywhere within the near future. We'll see, though.

When I do come back to this I'll instead start sweeping all of my data from the survey into a shoddily put together video that will briefly skim over every gathered figure for a couple of moments so that you can at least see what was gathered. If you really do want to see how many other people are like you then you can go through the video yourself and do your own calculations. It'd be a pretty lazy way for me to do it, but at least the information will get out there Soon™.
