Sometimes I do, maybe like once a week. I use mouthwash everyday after I brush.

I use listerine... and breath mints. When something gets stuck I use a toothpick. Its easier for me to get it out with that

I usually avoid toothpicks. I hate it when I accidentally poke myself in the gum or when I get jostled and end up stabbin myself in the lip or somethin. Not fun.

I'm meant to floss since I have braces, but it's just too fiddly so I use mouthwash.

I've never used floss in my life,it's a waste of money. You don't need it.

As long as you brush twice a day that's all you need.

Absolutely false. Some people have good genes and their teeth resist cavities and stuff better than others. If you're one of those people, that's great! Consider yourself lucky.

For the majority of people, you definitely should floss; brushing simply does not clean between your teeth like flossing does, and you're placing yourself at risk for numerous gum and tooth diseases if you don't floss. The amount of research on this is quite conclusive.

Do you work for a dentist or something?Where did you get this information?

Brushing and mouthwash is more than enough,America seems to be tricked by "research" pretty easily. My dentist(also a family friend) has told me that flossing is a scam used mainly by American dentists. Not flossing will increase your chances of getting gum disease very very slightly.(Not suggesting YOU are American or anything but these are the facts.)

Flossing is an optional extra but definitely not necessary.

Oh yeah and saying that the research is conclusive on flossing is like saying that the research is conclusive on increased levels of C02 causes global warming whereas the complete opposite is true.Does everybody just accept what they are told these days?

what's the scam? You said yourself that flossing reduces the risk slightly.
Who stands to gain from a scam? Is every dentist in the country in on this conspiracy?

The scam is that people pay for floss thinking it's really necessary, making floss company rich. The risk of disease is so marginally reduced it's not worth the money you pay.Especially when a roll of thread could do the same job for a fraction of the price.

Now that's not to say if you like having flossed teeth your wrong because that's a different thing all together. It's people who buy it thinking they need it.

Its like the way people who have ADD/ADHD are given drugs prescriptions for life, where as in a lot of cases they only need them for a few years, yet are kept on them for life which = pharmaceutical company win.

I actually just saw the Symptoms of adult ADD there and I seem to tick nearly every single box which is weird/kinda makes sense.(I can't believe I'm starting a debate in a "do you floss thread"P

What is this.... "Floss"?

Seriously it's nearly extinct. It should be done but not many people DO actually floss anymore.

I completely agree with you. and yes unfortunately a lot people believe what the media tells them which is how obama got elected. dont get me started on that.
Most people don't floss and I'd say the majority of those people have good dental health. So flossing is not necessary as supported by pikaville's statement.

Flossing is an optional extra but definitely not necessary.
In a twin study, those who brushed and flossed had significantly less bacteria in their mouth than those who did not.

http://www.nature.com/bdj/journal/v205/n5/full/sj.bdj.2008.790.html

Another twin study demonstrated that tongue brushing and tooth brushing plus flossing decreased gingival bleeding by 42% compared to just tonguebrushing/toothbrushing, and both groups had decreased incidence of halitosis (bad breath).
http://www.joponline.org/doi/abs/10.1902/jop.2006.050399

Here's the most important one of the studies I'm going to cite; it compares brushing and mouthwash to brushing plus mouthwash plus flossing.

After six months, a Brushing + Flossing + Mouth rinse group saw an 11% improvement over a Brushing + Mouth rinse only group. Improvements were largest in a third group that used brushing, flossing, and an essential oil containing mouth rinse.
http://jada.ada.org/cgi/content/full/135/4/496

The study also says, “However, considering the evidence that EOs penetrate dental plaque biofilm,24 this mechanical/chemotherapeutic combination seemed to provide a synergistic effect rather than one that is additive.

We suggest that this is the supragingival analogue to the therapeutic combination of scaling and root planing plus antibiotics, whether they are delivered systemically or locally. In other words, mechanical therapy is performed first to disrupt the biofilm and to decrease the total microbial load. This allows for a more effective penetration of the plaque biofilm by the chemotherapeutic agent, thus enhancing its activity.”

In other words, it’s not enough to just floss or just rinse; the two work together and improvement can only really be seen if they are done together; one alone will not work as well (the effects of just mouthwash will not be that good).

Up to 30% of the population may be genetically more susceptible to gum disease, despite good dental habits.
http://www.perio.org/consumer/faq_general.htm

According to a survey of members of the AAP (American Academy of Periodontology), 74% of periodontists recommended flossing once per day, 19% said twice per day, 3% said three times a day, and 3% said after eating. 82% said they personally floss daily.

http://www.perio.org/consumer/questions.survey.comp.htm

There is a study that shows using a mouth rinse is as effective as flossing:
http://jada.ada.org/cgi/content/full/134/3/359

However, they point out “However, we do not wish to suggest that the mouthrinse should be used instead of dental floss or any other inter-proximal cleaning device. To address this issue, additional studies would be required to determine the incremental effect of using the mouthrinse specifically in addition to the routine of toothbrushing and flossing.”

Moreover, “But flossing scofflaws don’t get off the hook that easily. Most studies still say flossing has oral health benefits. The study comparing mouthwash with flossing was paid for by Pfizer, which makes Listerine. And the American Dental Association points out that the study — and another one that was published earlier — didn’t examine the effects on tooth decay and periodontitis.”
http://www.aolhealth.com/conditions/in-brief-dont-brush-off-flossing

In addition, the same rules as the study further up apply; rinsing and flossing are needed for optimal cleaning.

Oh yeah and saying that the research is conclusive on flossing is like saying that the research is conclusive on increased levels of C02 causes global warming whereas the complete opposite is true.Does everybody just accept what they are told these days?
There was an excellent thread in the DH where it's all laid out quite clearly. Global warming and our contribution to is not up for debate, it's not ambiguous. It is science, and there is a definite consensus among the world's scientists that modern warming trends are caused by human activity. This is not up for argument, it is a fact. I suggest you read this:

And no, I don't work for a dentists' office or something. I just like to take care of my teeth and health.

GoldShadow is a cool cat.

But seriously, guys, you should really floss everyday. It's not some sort of ridiculous dentist propaganda.
