do we dissect this game too much?

It seems all I ever see anymore (Besides the occasional social thread) are threads like "how to get better at X" or "A deeper look into aspect Y" And while thats very good in my opinion, I cant help but wonder if we are over complicating things a little bit. do we miss the basic's by studying the advanced stuff too much, by dissecting it too much? I know for me after I learned to wave dash (Fifth year of playing the game since its launch)I became so focused on how everyone said my game would improve if I learned to wavedash that I neglected several basic concepts that made me a good player. So do we dissect this game a little too much?

It isn't that we dissect it too much, per se, but it's more that people tend to use these techniques as cure-alls for getting better, instead of apply those to their basics. So...everything we dissect is good, we're just bad at applying them USEFULLY to our game.

Hell no we don't

We don't dissect it ENOUGH

But some players overlook strong fundamentals in practicing advanced techs and are bad because of it.

I think, it's pretty much impossible to learn how to make good decisions just from reading in a forum. Seeing what options are there for you, if you put in the work to learn how to do the ATs, sure. But practically applying them can imho only be learned from playing, preferably against better players, and as many of them as are willing to play :)

I remember when I first learned to WD. Burned a y button-shaped blister into the top of my thumb. I did it all the time, even when it wasn't necessary.

Still, though, there's no reason why we should leave anything in Melee undiscovered. Innovation is what drives the metagame forward. We should milk the game for all it's worth, and exploit every microgram of tech that we can find. Mostly, we've dissected Melee to the point where there isn't much left to find. What we do with what we find, however, is what is constantly improving. The ways we organize and practically implement what we discover will remain dynamic even if we've found all there is to find, but new finds can always help the current community.

If someone uses ATs but still sucks, then that's their problem. I will answer the inverse of your question by saying that I see no reason to purposefully stop the growth of the metagame. It's one of those "Why not?" questions. It's not like we're outsourcing new shine exploits or something.

This is the part where we need to focus on when it comes to this subject

I fell into this as well for the first year I learned ATs, and I'm still getting rid of bad habits from that.

I agree with Strong Bad. This game is so complicated to the point where the precise dissection of it is more than necessary.

The issue here isn't that the game has been "dissected too much". It's that you focused too much on a single aspect instead of looking at the big picture.

I didn't read the OP, but I've been hanging a lot with Mango recently because he's living in NY now and I'll ask him for advice about matches every now and then. The only thing he says to me is "just ****".

Pretty much all you need.

people learn differently
i'm inherently bad at video games, i don't subconsciously pick up on habits and patterns and make subconscious mental notes about what players do in any given situation, or how they like to respond to _____ or whatever
so for me i need to dissect everything, i need to have consciously said at one point 'okay, he responds to missiles by shielding, so grab it'
i need to have some factual backing to the moves i throw out, like why did i choose fair over nair? because fair is 1 frame faster, was that probably a trivial factor in that exchange? most likely, but it's how i'm able to choose my moves

i'm behind where i need to be, but this is how i improve, i can't just spam matches and get better

I think people on smashboards need to stop taking every post about tactics or strategies at face value.

Yes, everyone knows that *insert mu quirk* doesn't work 100% of the time.
