Unfortunately yes. There is no way to access the online menu without a NSU subscription.

Since this thread is up, I have two questions. I bought a Nintendo Membership card (the red card you can buy from stores and have a 12 month access for $20) and have been using it since January 2, 2019. I bought it for the sole purpose of playing online. Would this card or any payment be required so I can update Super Smash Bros. Ultimate with patches, as well as downloadable content like characters? Or is this card or any payment not required to download content like characters or updates?
