I hate to say it but sadly I think Dixie will end up as an Echo Fighter. Obviously she should be unique, but with the small amount of newcomers we're getting and the seeming focus on adding in fan favorites, i think it's almost an inevitability that we get K. Rool. That wouldn't be too big of an issue on its own but the whole "Echo Fighter" branding makes me think that it's a fancy way to add in more fan favorites as clones for less backlash. I still have some hope that she'll be more of a Lucas type clone than a full-blown one like Lucina, but either way I don't expect her to be fully unique anymore.

A semi-clone makes sense, Echo doesn't. Especially since Funky also exists.

Dixie getting the Rocket Barrel Boost opposed to the Helicopter Spin while DONKEY KONG does use a move inspired by it with Spinning Kong is the ultimate disrespect.

Even Ganondorf hard reads aren't as disrespectful as this would potentially be.

Dixie Kong as semi-clone or Half Echo or whatever we call this nowadays
And K.Rool as a mostly unique character

Would there really be a legitimate excuse for having Dixie as an Echo Fighter though? I'm really not seeing it at all. Almost none of Diddy's main attributes are very characteristic of Dixie at all aside from perhaps some banana play, Monkey Flip and some shared tilts/throws/aerials. At the very worst scenario, Dixie would be to Diddy as Dr. Mario is to Mario (which is still pretty different, and by the looks of Doc in this game, he has been even further diverged from Mario). At best, Dixie should have all different grabs, specials and at the very least altered Smashes/tilts if they truly wanted to catch her character.

Anyways, Ridley is out of the way in terms of being a roadblock, and a few other big characters have been disconfirmed, so I'm just praying for any Donkey Kong rep at this point, and I have a feeling in my gut that either Dixie, K. Rool, or even both have a real shot at making it given the amount of fan service that's in the game.

Perhaps I'm being an optimist, and perhaps I may be getting ready for some serious disappointment, but I think it's now or never, so I'm going to let the disco train roll full speed ahead, for better or for worse for one of my favourite yet neglected franchises!

I will say I'm see a lot of repeats from the old Daisy threads on why she wouldn't be a clone (or at least a semi-clone).

I personally want Dixie to be her own thing but in terms of facts, Diddy's rapid neutral where he waved his tail has been changed (at least according to the wiki) so that's the one main logistical difference out of the way.

It could happen.

It's important to keep expectations realistic though, as much as I'd like to see her in she's facing a lot of competition and there isn't many new spots according to Sakurai. Dixie could easily miss her chance again.

I think an echo fighter would be better than nothing. It is by no means the ideal scenario for a new DK rep (it has been ten years since the last one, Diddy), but just like Lucina fans were super happy when she was added as a clo- Err, echo fighter in Smash 4, I would be happy for Dixie.

I was just thinking this. With how well known of a franchise DK is I'm still shocked it only has 2 reps. Dixie deserves to be the third the most IMO and if it's an echo fighter so be it. Better than nothing.

It is really bizarre. I always thought part of why Metroid and Donkey Kong were treated so badly in Smash being due to some of the most popular games in both series being developed in the west, rather than in Japan (sounds silly, but it could explain it). Now we have Ridley, at least. If we don't get a new DK rep, I will be rather puzzled at why there is such a bias against the series in the Smash development team.

Just please don't put another pale anime swordsman while ignoring Dixie. That would be like throwing salt and pepper in someone's wound, then throwing gasoline on top of it and setting it on fire.

Right. Whatever you say. I think K. Rool is awesome (I absolutely adore the DKC trilogy) but you still haven't responded my question on why he is likely.

Hate to disagree, but an echo fighter does make sense for me. Seeing the removal of Diddy's tail moves means the skeleton will more closely match with the fighter she's echoing. Obviously they can't make her helicopter hair have the same momentum or trajectory as Diddy's rocketbarrels, but think how Dark Pit's Silver Bow works. Stronger hit in exchange for minimal control. They could just have it shoot her in a straight or slightly slanted line for her recovery.

At this point, her as a unique fighter is nigh impossible; an echo fighter may be all we can hope for.

Dixie Kong would really work better as a unique fighter since she has several signature abilities that Diddy Kong doesn't have, but with the removal of Diddy Kong's tail abilities, I agree that they could be an echo fighter.

If we get another Smash game after this, I could see Dixie Kong getting a moveset revamp after the fact.

You actually raise an interesting point. They clearly don't want to keep bloating the series with more and more newcomers, so maybe a new Smash in quite a few years would focus on revamping echo fighters, semi-clones and maybe even unique veterans. Could be interesting. They changed Link's down and neutral B (somewhat), so they might not care anymore about that talk of not wanting to change veterans much.

Here's the thing about Dixie, she's likely to have no rocketbarrels, a ponytail twirl and a Cargo Grab if she makes it in. You can make a semi clone out of that but an echo is doubtful.

The way many of us see it, they'd be getting in for 2 different reasons: Dixie because of Tropical Freeze and K. Rool because of the ballot. K. Rool's been absent long enough to not interfere with Dixie and is a massive ballot champion, while Dixie's got the success of Tropical Freeze to fall back on, being the most picked of the companion Kongs by far. They're riding 2 separate trains to Smash Switch; that's why I'm rooting for both.


Saw the vid; I'm honestly tired of the "She looks like Diddy, therefore clone" mindset. I can "understand" that line of thinking coming from people who don't know much about DKC, but the dude in the vid is very familiar with the series so his thoughts seem to come from not wanting to put more thought into a moveset, rather than ignorance.

I was surprised to see VeemonTamer 's moveset featured in the vid and called the most popular fanmade concept though. Obviously I had nothing to do with her post but I was very happy to see it pop up; even with the critique he had I'd be through the roof that it got exposure if I were her. Well done, VT! Makes me wish I put my moveset in the same format so it'd be easier to show, but she has her path and I have mine LOL.

He probably looked at yours and was like tl;dr or might of been afraid to read it because it would prove his point wrong. Don't sell yourself short though with the moveset; you got it done MUCH faster than I did and it gave people confidence that Dixie didn't have to be a lazy clone. Plus the template made it easier to absorb, which is great for convenience. Your moveset was more likely to reach Nintendo than mine and honestly that's fine by me LMAO. You'll get no salt or shade from me. :D

I don't usually lurk the Dixie thread, but this is the first time I heard about Diddy having his tail attacks removed...

And with Sakurai really pushing the Echo Fighter thing and making it "a thing", I wonder if it's possible Diddy's tail attacks were removed specifically to make it possible to have Dixie be an Echo.

Not that it will happen, nor do I necessarily want it to happen (Dixie has plenty of stuff to work with on her own), but what was once impossible is now possible (Dixie being a near clone of Diddy now that he no longer uses his tail to attack, an extremity Dixie wouldn't be able to mimic otherwise).

Honestly, my expectations weren't that high, but it sold almost 90,000 copies in Japan first week which was way higher than what the wiiU version did and looking at Kirby Star allies, which is really not worth the full price even if it's a new game, kirby star allies managed to sell almost 150,000 copies first week in us. I'm really worried now regarding dk's future.
There are people thinking that a new DK game will be announced later this year with the kremlins in it and shortly after a new smash switch trailer with dk content, because the developer of the mario+rabbids Kingdom battle dk dlc said in an interview that there is a new team at Nintendo working on the dk ip.
It sounds legit to me, but seeing those dkctf sales. I bet Nintendo also expected more.

It outsold the wii u version in japan. We still don't know how it did in us and Europe, because there aren't any official numbers

Donkey Kong Country always sold well. 1, 2, 3, Returns, Tropical Freeze. Personally, I wouldn't worry about its future. The worrying thing here is that even though it sells well, the last DK rep was introduced in Brawl, so clearly DK is not a priority for Smash devs. But then again, Metroid isn't either and there is Ridley. Though, of course, Ridley was much more requested than Dixie Kong, so there is that.

The funny thing is that sakurai said that ridley was included because the fans overseas wanted him, so actually there is no excuse why king k rool isn't realizable as a character because we know and he should probably know it too that king k.rool is more demanded than ridley even in his own country. I don't know what that could mean for Dixie. Let's say this is Sakurai's last smash game, I can't imagine that he thinks the game is complete and perfect without more dk content. I only want a good selection of the great music from dkc 2 and tropical freeze, a well designed new stage from tropical freeze and Dixie and k.rool of course. I don't think she would work as an echo fighter and I don't want her to be this way, but as we know we won't get many newcomers, I would even be happy if dixie ends up a semi-clone. I mean ness and lucas are similar but as a former ness main I can clearly say that they play completely differently.
When do we get the next reveals? Can't wait anymore

All I know is that admits being a huge Fire Emblem fan (and it shows in Smash; Though I believe Roy and Corrin were added due to Nintendo's request, as to promote their respective games), so maybe he isn't that big into DK or Nintendo doesn't seem much purpose in promoting the DK series with reps in Smash.

I would be satisfied with a Ness/Lucas scenario. Lucas plays nothing like Ness even though they share three specials (with different properties). Lucas tilts and smash attacks are so satisfying while Ness' do nothing for me. Dixie having different tilts, smash attacks and variations of Diddy's specials would be good enough for me. Better than an echo fighter. The question is, are we getting semi-"echo fighters" or just echo fighters like Dark Pit, Lucina?

As for more reveals, my theory is that we will get one in August, one in October and one right before the release. I don't have anything to support this other than the fact we usually got reveals every two months back in the Smash 4 days. Plus, three newcomers until the release fits with the "not many newcomers" statement,

I'm bringing my expectations down to Wolf/Lucas-level clone, which is fine because I loved Wolf in Brawl but couldn't get near Fox and Falco's movesets.

In about a month or so we should have a clearer idea of the roster so right now we'll just fall back on hype for the time being.

I don't have the source anymore but I recall I read somewhere that sakurai even played and liked the original dkc trilogy.
I would really like to see him commenting on that dk issue in an interview or something
