I couldn't find this anywhere, so can anyone please tell me if custom controls are legal in big (None online) tournaments? All I do is turn the down on the control pad on the Wiimote & Nunchuck from shield to Dsmash, and the up on the control pad to Usmash.

C-stick: Specials.
Z: Jump

although I use standard control schemes... playing other competitive games like soul calibur 4 and such, they are allowed to change button layouts, so its only natural that smash adhere to that code.

K thanks everyone, but now I have another question. At my local dollar store, they're selling GC controllers with 2 extra buttons. 1 says "Turbo" and the other says "Clear." What do these do? And are they legal in tournament play???

They're probably just what they sound like, a turbo button and a button to reset the turbo command. They're illegal in tourney play, couldn't honestly see much advantage to using them anyway.

Yes some tournies atleast... although ive never seen one at a tourny without the rule being: you cant use the turbo button even if it is there... and yes i also think that it really has no point.. there is a macro button on some too, i think that means u can hit the macro button, do a couple things (for example d3's chaingrab) and press it again when u are done, and set it to a button that you never use.. well that button auto chaingrabs with dedede... atleast thats what i think it does. but yeah turbo shouldn't be a problem.. really nothing good about it.

Without costume controls you won't be able to play the game the way you LEARNED to play it and/or do any advanced techs.

Almost every AT in the game (not like Brawl has many vital ones) can be done with any configuration so I don't see how a hypothetical custom ban would stifle that.

That being said there's no reason to ban custom controls.

Not much room left for discussion. You are free to customize your controls at pretty much any tournament you go to. Controller mods such as removing buttons or adding them etc are often banned from tournaments.
