That would be the Stooges and MC5, and if you want to get real technical, Link Wray as the first practitioners of what would be called "Punk" later on.

Many bands are under the impression that they're developing pop music (see Passenger, the UK band, not the other one), when in reality it's not anything that would garner much mainstream airplay. Weird thought to be having.
