Countering Shield Grab

Well my friend has found a way to beat my short hopped aerial spam with falcon. When i short hop a knee at him, he just shields and grabs me out of it....I'm not sure if I an L-cancelling correctly

Assuming I L-canceled my Knee will i always get shield grabbed or will I be able to avoid this? My friend was using Fox and I was Falcon just for reference.

Also, is it a bad idea to advance offensively with short hopped Knees, cause I do that sometimes just because I really want to hit people with a knee :D

What are the best offenses and defenses with falcon and some good combos and combo starters? how can i improve my falcon game more?

If you know hes going to shield grab you out of your knee and you L-canceled correctly just hit A. That will make you jab right after you land and that jab will hit him before he can grab you. After you tap him you can do the Gentleman or you can grab him or something.

Do that. But instead do a Falcon Punch. Since he's so used to shield-grabbing you, after you jab and stop his shield-grab he'll be in complete shock, allowing you to land mother nature's abortion.

It's all about the mindgames that leave your opponent flabbergasted.

or instead of landing in front of him. you land behind him!

Also very good techniques are to not use Knee's unless its a ending combo. my friend showed me shffl'd uairs ---> dash behind and grab. works a great amount of time. or shffl'ed uairs to dash behind nairs work good also.

Dashing behind to grab with falcon is the win.

You don't want to be jumping in with the knee. It's predictable, it doesn't have that much range and it also doesn't have much priority. If you must, though, don't fastfall it. Just fly through them, so you'll land behind them. That way, they can't shieldgrab you.

You really should be approaching with spaced nairs, shffl'd uairs and dairs. The dairs you can space to hit the back of their shield, so they can't shieldgrab you.

The best way to approach with Falcon is with a grab, it's also the best combo starter and one of his fastest approaches. I spend most of my time with Falcon crossing people up and running around baiting stuff so I can grab, then I get free combos! It's amazing. If they get aggressive they'll start jumping into shield grabs and n-airs (use the first hit for more priority).

Why are you shffling an aerial into someone's shield? What's the point? What's your plan there? Follow up with what? Jab? OMG WUT IF THEY SHIELD THE JAB??FSDJK?

Think man, think! I know inside that little red helmet, you're thinking, "if he jumps into my knee, I can do an awesome combo or a free KO!" What you're not thinking is "If I empty short hop and DD through him and grab from behind, he probably can't do anything and I can land a free knee into an awesome combo."

Jump behind them while they are shielding and see what they do. If they begin to roll backwards (toward you) falcon punch. If they roll the other way, run at them and short hop + falcon punch (or grab).

Best ways to approach imo is.
A. Spacing with shffld nairs.
B. Dash dance to graps.
C. A well timed raptor boost.
D. MOONWALK!!! and he will just be flabbergasted by your sexiness that he will let you bair his face.
Oh and my fav simple combo is Stop to knee, works on every character at the right percentages. But beyond that it would be difficult to give you any specific combos to try without knowing the character you generaly play against.

Edit: nvm you did say you were playing a fox. hmmm My fav combo for a fox at like 60% is stomp, grab as there falling to the ground. Now from here you wanna go into a up or down throw. depending on your placement on the stage. But most likely you will want to do an up throw. From here you can expand this combo in so many ways I cant really give you specifics, but if he is not a great di'er a fsmash is a great and easy option. If he lands on a platform, chase the tech with knee.

I just want to support that in your situation, just doing an empty short hop once you realize he's shielding is best. Then you can quickly go for a grab or DD and see what he does. I like to short hop uair (no fast fall) past them usually and then either go for a grab or raptor boost. Just don't be predictable. You've gotten plenty of suggestions already and you can easily think of more so make your game unpredictable!

Thanks for all the suggestions guys.

Yes i know, ive been told i am way too predictable...but i am trying to work on technicality at the moment rather than mindgames. But perhaps I shouldn't be so anti mindgame..

Grabs obviously are good but its hard to pull them off cause sometimes u run in for a grab and get smashed. But i suppose if i DDed them it would help.

I have issues approaching with nair cause i dont think i am spacing it right, i keep getting hit. Also its really hard to shffl uairs...especially to chain uair.

But yeah i will keep thesee suggestions in mind as I work to improve, thanks.

Btw, how do you pull off the Gentleman? I cant seem to time it right.

Ah, that's no problem, just follow my simple step-by-step instructions

Step 1/ Buy the PAL version

Step 2/ Press A three times

Step 3/ ???

Step 4/ Profit

But I've heard that if you press A and Z together for the third hit it helps

I probably use the nair way to much in my approach game so I would shffl that usually but the empty SH sounds alot better in this situation.
