Overdone fanservice makes me cringe. It's not turning me off from the game, but I just wish they weren't so shameless about it.
I have been a die hard Fire Emblem fan ever since I was a kid. And I'm American. I played the games on Super Famicom all in Japanese and own the OVA on VHS.

For some reason, I ain't digging this new Fire Emblem. I'm on the fence. And it's not that the game is split in two. There's something about it...I just can't quite put my finger on it. People in this thread seem to have played it already or know a great deal about it. Besides the split, is there anything substantial it adds?

...besides dating sim mechanics?
I hear the gameplay has been cleaned up a ton since Awakening happened. The pair up mechanic is now rebalanced and interesting, and the stages - especially in the Conquest edition - are supposed to be more interesting than just open fields.

they also removed weapon durability, now there's a system where more powerful weapons decrease your stats after a fight.

I'm a big fan of the weapon durability change. I actually played Gaiden just to see what a game without weapon durability would be like, and I think it did a better job of making me think about weapon and item management then any of the other games could. That, and playing Genealogy kinda helped me realize that I feel the standard way of handling weapons has been mostly...artificial, so to speak.

That, with the new way of handling pair-up and the changes to the weapon triangle among other things, has me looking forward to Fates' mechanics.

...the so-called 'dating sim' crap is a very much overblown, optional and overall minor part of the game. Fates is just as much about turn-based strategy warfare as FE has ever been.

I wanna know, marriage has been a part of Fire Emblem for quite a while now, why is it a problem or negative point all of a sudden?

Once the character tries to kiss me through the screen, it's hard to remember I'm playing a Fire Emblem game.

unless pair-up was changed, not really
you get pretty big combat bonuses from getting an S or A+ rank
But you can still get supports the old-fashioned way, you don't have to pet faces.

And if the complaints are about the 'confession scenes' at the end of a support chain, come on, it's like, a 30 second clip, and I'm pretty sure it's skippable. REALLY not as big a deal as the fanbase makes it out to be.

oh, I thought you had to go through the scenes to get the effects, my bad

When I get embarrassed, it's literally a painful experience. That brief 30 second clip is more than enough to make my face feel like it's on fire, and even if I skip it, I can't just ignore it. The fact that it's optionally doesn't make it any less cringe worthy or embarrassing. But, at the same time, I really don't want to miss out on extra stages and characters.

I know some people really appreciate it, but it does spoil my enjoyment of the game somewhat - or at least, it did with Awakening. I'm not going to overreact and say the series has been ruined, but I do wish they cut down on fanservice a tad bit. Just a bit. I don't think they need to get rid of S-supports all together...but I think the game really could of lived without children characters.

...I'm gonna cut myself short before this turns into a rant, but I really don't like the "it's optional" argument. Pretending something doesn't exist doesn't stop it from existing.

It's like they wanted the supports to feel more important/actually impactful. And since the player is playing from the perspective of Robin/Corrin, it makes sense they get that angle.

That big a deal, for you, huh? Don't S support in public, heh.
Skinship is weird, I'll give you that, but I just get so tired of people claiming that it doesn't feel like Fire Emblem anymore because now there are really brief, skippable, clips, in which a bunch of pixels confesses affection for another bunch of pixels. It's just...such a hilariously minor thing.
Now, I rolled my eyes a few times at Ninian x Eliwood being shoved down my throat in FE7, but a good chunk of that was actually required to further the story.

The whole thing just makes me think of Genwunners, whining about how "pokemon is ruined forever", or "Game Freak is running out of ideas!" because now there are ice cream cones and chandeliers, completely and conveniently ignoring the sentient pokeballs, magnets, and freaking eggs/seed things that have been there since Red/Blue. Or all the positive steps forward each new generation takes.

In short, just focus on the positive. Rejoice in the fact that we're getting new Fire Emblem games at all, and that the series has a future in which the things you don't like may eventually be toned down or even removed.

We've gone through the whole "it's optional" argument over on reddit to the point no one really uses it anymore. It was mostly used as a hard counter to...pretty much everything that was criticized. Facerubbing, marriage, kids, anything people didn't like. I've found it only really works when you apply it yourself. I don't like facerubbing, but it's optional, so I won't use it. That said, this is because I feel facerubbing is a minor quirk in the longrun, but I don't think others who feel stronger about it then I do should be hushed.

One of my biggest complaints about another FE game, Shadow Dragon, is that certain characters can only be unlocked after you kill off an assorted number of other characters. I know I'd be upset if someone just said "oh but it's optional" because it doesn't change it from being really dumb. It's obviously worse then facerubbing, which barely locks anything at all besides a few character lines, but I feel the same logic still applies.

In any case, I do agree the dating sim are overstated to a big degree. I really wish more thought would go into how Conquest was deliberately made with veterans/fans of the older games in mind, how much effort they put into balancing the gameplay and writing a better story after hearing the complaints following Awakening. But, eh, what can you do.

Y'all are a bunch of babies. Why can't you just man up and pucker up? There's an adorable anime chick (or man) made up of pixels staring expectantly on the other side of that screen, wanting to do nothing but embrace you full-on and make beautiful things, and she'll kiss you with or without consent. So what's the big deal? Why not indulge a bit by making-out with a gorgeous, completely fictional, not real character when given the chance? I'd certainly take that opportunity.

I never once S-supported a character in public.

I guess I just embarrass way too easily.

Well, you make a good point here. Most people really are making a bigger deal out of it then it really is. I know I at least try to focus on the positives, but when something I don't like is brought up, I can't help but speak about it myself.

Still the best part of the entire show.

It's like they wanted the supports to feel more important/actually impactful. And since the player is playing from the perspective of Robin/Corrin, it makes sense they get that angle.
Compared to previous FE installments, I really enjoyed the expansion of the support systems in Awakening. The added depth and accessibility the supports have really went a long way to fleshing out the characters and giving the player a stronger attachment to them (which helps heighten the impact when/if they kick the bucket). So overall, I thought it was a welcome improvement, and I'm looking forward to seeing more of it in Fates.

I like how easy it is to get supports in the recent games.

The GBA supports take so much time to get.

I wouldn't say the new support system gives more depth to the characters than the GBA titles did, since a lot of 3DS supports focus on the same couple of character traits or pieces of background. However, the added accessibility in the 3DS games is a HUGE plus. And the old 5-supports-per-character limit just stinks.

There's still room for improvement, but I really like what they've got going with the new support system.

Hey guys, do you think it's a good idea to play a bit of Marth & Shulk in preparation for Corrin?

I usually do not use sword characters (my mains being :4lucas::4gaw::4wario2::4bowser:) and I want to learn how to space my sword slashes correctly.

Any tips what else to learn before Corrin drops next month?

Wasn't that a cushion for if a lot of your units were killed? Usually those characters would be unlocked if you had less than 15 total. If I recall, they weren't that great anyway. Choosing Nagi over Tiki is pointless.

Even if you practice with other characters, you might find that Corrin feels different from any of the other characters. I practices with characters like Palutena and Lucario a lot in preparation for Mewtwo, but in the end, Mewtwo felt very little like anyone else on the roster.

It may be good to practice spacing anyway, though. It's a useful skill even if you aren't using a sword fighter. Marth might be the best to practice with since his tipper provides a clear visual guide, but I got a pretty good spacing game just from using (Dark) Pit's fairs and occasionally goofing around with Lucina.

You could also see it as a reward for bad play (another point against it), considering they aren't the generic schmucks named things like "Wymp" if you do really badly. But, that's beside my point.

So those of you that have played it or know a lot about it:

What is the deal with the hubbub of this lesbian girl. You drug her and she becomes attracted to males? Is there an option for gay marriage in Fates?

I've also heard incest is back. Like full on? You can marry your blood relatives?

Yup. The Avatar can marry anyone from Hoshido or Nohr, including their siblings.

There's PROBABLY some plot reasoning for it. Don't actually spoil it if you know since I've been doing amazingly on avoiding spoilers, besides some very obvious ones/the chilluns.

The answer is simple: The developers are incest-happy. There was incest in past Fire Emblem games right?

The Hoshido siblings are NOT your blood relatives either. Mikoto is only the avatar's biological mother, and your real father is another massive spoiler entirely.

So yep, no blood-related incest here, so ship those siblings to your hearts content!

Corrin could have the potential to possibly beat Rosalina & Luma. His side Smash all though it would get stale, could push back Luma and maybe could go through luma and hit Rosalina on the tip of his arm. Maybe in the air when she tries to up air, he can counter in the air if its fast enough

Incest in the middle ages was a very common for having incest.

This explains what is the whole deal and why people have short attention spans.

And there is one gay option for each sex. Male avatars who play Conquest get Niles (Zero), while female avatars get Syallah (Tharja expy) on Birthright. Both are available in Revelations.

About the lesbian girl (Soleil) you drug her because she becomes timid (or something like that i didn't understand) when close to a cute girl, so you drug her to she train speak with cute girls with you (something like that)

There was in FE4 with Arvis and Deideree. But they werent aware they were half siblings and were manipulated to be married.

Well you can marry your cousin, other than that there's not really any incest.
