Controllers

I'm just starting to refine my game and become competitive at Melee. I've been using the standard stock Gamecube controller thus far but recently picked up a newer controller meant for Wii/Gamecube play and find it much easier to short hop/wavedash with. Is there any controllers that are even better suited to Melee players?

Link to controller I'm using currently: http://www.gamestop.ca/wii/accessories/biogenik-wii-vintage-controller/311664

Well...I would say it's about personnal preferences but I play original controllers and like them a lot more than "fake" ones.

Holy **** that's a cool controller. I want one, what's it like? Any experienced players who use one/have tried one?

That controller doesn't seem much worse than the official controllers, but I doubt any 3rd party controller can compare to Nintendo's in terms of durability (i.e. Don't be surprised if it craps out on you in a matter of months, especially with a game as technically demanding as Melee). I also can't see the triggers on that controller which could be a huge deal if your L-cancelling, shielding/light shielding, airdodging/wavedashing is affected.

the buttons are a lot more rigid and I like it better than the nintendo controllers. The bumpers aren't as floaty/swimmy in the socket and the B-button is a little larger while the X/Y buttons are stiffer allowing for crisper tapping. I find it a LOT easier to short hop using it.

rofl dude that controller looks pretty terrible...

honestly, you wont find any controllers that compare to official nintendo licensed ones

"Rofl dude" your claim has no factual input behind it as you have never even tried playing with this particular controller. I don't understand why you'd post such a narrow-minded comment when there is no truth to support it.

Thanks for the input! Yes I do fear that durability may be it's only downfall but we'll see if it stands up for itself, you are right in saying that the standard Gamecube controllers are extremely durable. The bumpers/triggers are just dandy, not only that but I find them a lot more responsive. And it was not a huge buy so I wouldn't be too mad if it craps out!

I'm tempted to get one of these but I'm afraid switching controllers back and forth will mess me up.

I've had my fair share of 3rd party controllers. How many still work? Zero. I've had my two official GC controllers for about 8 years without having to buy more. Melee ***** 3rd party controllers. I'd be surprised if that controller lasted more than a year.

No point in fighting about it though...
If you have an easier time playing with that particular controller then good for you...

This was a far more thought-out and intelligent response. Regardless, I have 4 stock Gamecube controllers to fall back on so it's not a huge loss if it does run its course. I was looking more for performance-based feedback rather than durability.

They can become almost the same with Melee. Even if you wanted to just buy a new controller every 6-12 months, it'd have effects on your game play because you'd be adjusting each time you get a new controller. Outside of that, it can be horrible if you become paranoid about your controller tripping out or not being accurate. Just look at M2K. :troll:

most players note 0 problems w/ the official nintendo controllers
they do what we ask of them with seemingly no draw backs
so if ur looking for something better, then you might wanna refine what you mean by better

short hopping with any controller to most melee vets is no problem at all, so little techy things like that become almost meaningless when it comes to controllers

what really matters is the joysticks

this is what i did with my last 3rd party controller:

In my experience 3rd party controllers suck. I used to practice with them when I first started (~05/06) but realized really fast that the quality is lacking. I could go into details as to why a cheaper quality product fits their business model, but I suppose i'm not quite qualified.

I've had that same (it was purple though) controller.
It lasted around a month before the stick went gimpy and stopped registering about 70% of my movements.

I hate to make a blanket statement like this, but pretty much any controller not produced by Nintendo is trash. Like, honestly. You can't go wrong with a good ol' GCN controller.

It's true. GCN controllers are best.

Although, two controllers I had in times past seemed to lose the rubber padding on their analog sticks after a while (because of this game), but those are simple enough to replace.

I got a white one from Japan, and I have one small problem with it (they're still the best). It might just be that I need to use it more, but when I try to dashdance I sometimes just do a walk and turn back and forth. I've been using for over a month now.

It be fun if Melee was bigger and companies like Logitech or Razer started making customized performance controllers designed for hi level play.

I bought that controller four months ago. It felt very weird.
So I bought this a month later...

http://www.amazon.com/Official-Nintendo-Classic-Gamecube-Wii-Controller/dp/B0017KIBAI/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1320176986&sr=8-8

I recommend buying this. Surprised the price increased after I bought it. I gave my third party controller to my cousin and I feel very comfortable with the new controller I bought. I'm not sure what you use to jump but if you use control stick for jump and everything else, you will feel comfortable in your gameplay. Their were certain things I feel you can do with the controller like pivot better or moonwalk. I think this is the best choice for competitive game play.

Play-Asia's the real deal. I've been buying and slowly wearing out controllers from there for a while now.

Are there any 3rd party controllers preferable over the original? And don't some tournaments have 3rd party controllers banned?

I bought a third party controller and it broke within a month.
Pfft. I bought a third party controller and took it out of the packaging broken rofl. The L button never worked, and the other buttons were so poorly made that some of them got stuck when you pressed them and stuff. Never buy a third party controller that tries to imitate the official ones' design.

Edit:
Lol Felipe, I should have done that with this controller but I got rid of it a long time ago. I'm about to spray paint an official controller, still need to de-gunk it before I get to painting it.

Basically the most reliable choice is the official one.
the only third party controller i know of that was good was the hori minipad.
But that was for the N64...

I actually only like Black, Silver, and White GCN Controllers

I don't even like the Purple or Orange ones

I'm that particular =P

EDIT: Also I bought a 3rd party controller once, and the analog stick was broken within a few days... it couldn't even handle a few days

Lol i had a similar problem ...
the first controller i ever had was a purple one. i had it for about 6 years before buying the black one i use now. whenever i switched to the black one it felt different to me. im not even talking about the buttons... it just felt weird holding it ... took me about 4 months to get used to switching between them

I feel your pain. A week before a tourney last year, I was practising with the third party controller and it broke. I had to borrow my friends controller on the tourney day.
