Its totally real. Its so much of a threat that Microsoft is giving an award of 250,000 Dollars.

Here's some symptoms of the worm.

# Account lockout policies being reset automatically.
# Certain Microsoft Windows services such as Automatic Updates, Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS), Windows Defender and Error Reporting Services disabled.
# Domain controllers responding slowly to client requests.
# Congestion on local area networks.
# Web sites related to antivirus software becoming inaccessible.

Also lucky us, that MS made a patch for this invulnerability. Though it's from 2008.

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/Bulletin/MS08-067.mspx

This security update resolves a privately reported vulnerability in the Server service. The vulnerability could allow remote code execution if an affected system received a specially crafted RPC request. On Microsoft Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003 systems, an attacker could exploit this vulnerability without authentication to run arbitrary code. It is possible that this vulnerability could be used in the crafting of a wormable exploit. Firewall best practices and standard default firewall configurations can help protect network resources from attacks that originate outside the enterprise perimeter.

This security update is rated Critical for all supported editions of Microsoft Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, and rated Important for all supported editions of Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008. For more information, see the subsection, Affected and Non-Affected Software, in this section.

The security update addresses the vulnerability by correcting the way that the Server service handles RPC requests. For more information about the vulnerability, see the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) subsection for the specific vulnerability entry under the next section, Vulnerability Information.

Recommendation. Microsoft recommends that customers apply the update immediately.

This actually real.

The virus is really major, and is set to "phone home" for more instructions today. So nobody really knows what's going to happen.

Suffice it to say that if you see odd things on your computer after today that look like it might be a virus, don't assume that it's an April Fool's joke.

This is real. I assume it was set up for April 1st to trick people that it was an April fools joke. Nothing major is going to happen to day, but I assume that its going to happen some time around the 5th.

So we have at least 5 days to patch that SOB worm out of our systems.

It's not a new virus that just came out today. It's an older one, that infected machines a couple months back.

They waited for April 1st to do anything with it, though. Think about it. It makes sense. Most people would just think it's an April Fool's joke if they saw something suspicious on their computer today.

I actually think my desktop has this. Or maybe my brother installed a different virus. Its fcking gay, we can't do anything on that computer. I can't connect to the router connected to it from my laptop either so I'm connected to my crappy neighbor's one.

The actual process of the worm are pretty neat. From what I read, it can get new orders whenever they want it do something new. Also, supposedly, it doesn't really manifest itself on the harmed computer.

I run a really tight ship on my Windows computer because I know how open Windows makes my computer. Even then, I know I still have to be really careful, so I can see this worm doing some damage because I can probably fine 30 people who don't even use virus scanners/protection. So, we may see it do something eventually.

Also, today was the day it changed its nature. It has the ability to start propagating/phoning home, but it may not start for a while. The people who did this were smart.

So, uh, what are ways to contract the virus? Would I have to download something or click some bad link or something? Or would it just appear if I somehow accessed an infected website or something?

Eek, scary.

It started around October, so you could have gotten it since then.

Okay alright.

I ran the malicious software remover. It didn't pick any thing up. Is that a good thing or is the virus that good at hiding? Also currently applying the XP SP2 patch for this thing.
Try to visit a website like norton or something,

If you can't, you're screwed.

Edit: Okay this near invisible font is reall annoying.
