I meant graphically. 3DS simply looks kinda grainy when you watch it on streams. I personally don't like the look of the game on stream as even Melee looked better than smash 3ds. It has nothing to do with how the gameplay works.

The previous statement was skepticism about competitive mechanics because unlike other fighting games the mechanics have not stayed largely the same. (Like in blazblue, there will always be dash cancels, jump cancels, roman cancels(rapid cancel), Instant Air dash, ect ect.)
Okay, you were just being kind of unclear there, that's all.

Presumably your fridge.
This is an interesting question, seeing as it's all we're going to have for at least 2 months or so. I imagine by the time the Wii U version rolls around we'll see what we're going to do. I see no reason for its scene to completely vanish when the Wii U version comes out though, seeing as it still has exclusive stages.

Lol, people have been playing and streaming a Gamecube Game for about ten years now. Graphics clearly aren't important.

IMHO, I don't see the 3DS version having a big tournament scene. That being said, I feel it has much more of a capacity for online tourneys started through Reddit/Smashboards/MIOM/NeoGAF/4chan/etc etc etc. which would certainly be fun in it's own right. Perks of such tourneys being that they could be played whenever, by larger groups of people, and fairly reliably. Just organize it through Challonge and you're good to go.

I would imagine that once the Wii U version releases, the vast majority of the scene will drop the 3DS version.

There's still room for some online tournaments though, I suppose.

In terms of large, hosted tournaments, I feel as though the WiiU version will be the one to play. Comfortable controls and better graphics just help it fit in better there. However, when it comes to smaller based tournaments, such as ones organized online or locally, I definitely see the 3DS version striving. There's still going to be a huge playerbase for it, WiiU version released or not, so I'm sure the 3DS one will find it's place and be constantly played, even if it isn't at huge official tournaments.

I honestly don't think 3DS Smash will be all that awkward, at least in terms of controls. I'm already used to shield-cancelling with Pokémon X & Y's Super Training.
(A lot of my Pokémon have the Rapid Shot ball for some reason, so you have to barrier-cancel the charge shot a lot of the time.)

A gamecube game that, by the way, still looks pretty good by today's standards and for the type of game it is. Still better than what is on 3ds so far in terms of looks. That was my point. I personally do not think smash 3ds looks all that pretty compared to melee when streamed due to how grainy 3ds games look when you take recorded footage and not gameplay you see in front of you. Some people like things that look good in addition to playing good and smash is no exception.

Besides that, why would you ever prefer to stream smash 3ds when smash wii U is out assuming the game has a good amount of support for competitive play? That is another issue entirely as they are pretty much the same game.

Not really. Fox looks like his fur is wrapped in plastic wrap and Yoshi looks like he's covered in grease, to name a few. Melee's graphics just didn't age well in general, especially since most characters are using dated designs, while SSB3D looks great.

Sm4sh can have a great scene, but people will have to give it a chance and accept that it's a new game, with new mechanics. It's not supposed to be Melee v2.

But looking at the mindset of most of the community, based on what I've seen. It'll be tested, deemed not worthy, after all it isn't Melee v2. Brawl never stood a chance, I doubt this one will either.

I've seen/read people already dumping on the game because it's "not melee". Some people really need to wake up, lol.

Here's hoping a few people actually give it a fair chance. The game looks fun, but I don't really go to tournaments, I just beat up on friends in whatever the newest game is, so meh.

Melee hasn't aged well in the visual department btw. haha.

I don't think the 3DS version will stay the competitive platform of choice once the WiiU version comes out. My reason in thinking this is due to the Gamecube controller being an option, as well as the classic controller, gamepad, and God knows what else.

On the visual end of things, the WiiU platform will be preferred just cause I've already heard many complaints, and experienced first hand just how hard it is to see what's going on in the 3DS version. It's just not practical, though the XL helps a ton with this.

What will happen to the 3DS version after the release of the WiiU game? It still will be played a lot. It's really awesome to be able to look forward to playing Smash in the car on the way to a tourney, or just anywhere in general with friends. It may not be as prevalent at tournaments, but due to the versions being exactly the same as Sakurai stated, it will make for a great version to practice on.

I am sure that a scene will be conceived upon launch; after that, I am not entirely certain that it will not be over-shadowed by the Wii U version. As I mentioned earlier, everything has the capacity to be competitive, it is largely dependent on those who shape the scene, however. So "we shall see" is basically the most accurate notion that I can ascertain from my empirical knowledge pertaining to similar situations.
The only necessity to create a competitive scene is a player base. So long as there's a will, there's a way. Any problem can be conquered. Will we be as big as the Wii U scene? I don't think we'll be completely overshadowed, like some do. Sure, given issues with streaming, we won't be as loud, but we'll still be around. I could be wrong since I've never organized a tournament, but it seems like it'd be easier to do so with the 3DS version than the Wii U version.

Can't speak for anyone else, but I'm going to treat the 3DS version like less of the spectator sport Smash is now and focus on getting fans playing. I'm hoping to get a tutor program going later down the road, either something 'official' over smash boards or just giving people pointers at locals.
If Smash 3DS is going to get a competitive scene, it's going to be online-only. Once that specific version releases, maybe players can see if the online has lag. I really don't think it's gonna get lag though. Maybe it's because of Nintendo's new online service (Nintendo Network).
Even if the Wii U version releases, there will be players on 3DS version. Of course, while the Wii U version may be the "definitive" version to some, that's just an opinion. If 3DS-exclusive players want to make their version competitive, let them make it competitive. It's a Smash game, after all.
The 3DS has a larger install base than that of Wii U, and because of that, it'd bring new Smash players to the table. People should stop bashing on the portable version, they didn't even try it out yet, so there's no point. I don't think the 3DS version will have a bad Wi-Fi connection, I mean, thanks to Nintendo Network, it's probably going to be much more stable than that of GameSpy's / WFC Brawl servers. In the end, the 3DS version deserves its own competitive scene. And last but not least, graphics don't make a game. Smash Bros. 64 has bad graphics for a N64 game yet it's still being played and regarded as one of the best games for the system. Once again, both the 3DS version and the Wii U version are made for both casual and hardcore / tourney players. Yes, both, not just the 3DS version. So in all, I agree with all of this, @Capps.
I'm glad people are starting to get it. If there is a will there is a way. There is no reason NOT to play this game competitively.

As for controls, I don´t have a problem playing FG like SSFIV3D or Tekken Prime 3D so I don't think i will have some problem with it.
As for Tourney, it will be side-tournaments since WiiU version is the "definitive one", but there will be 3DS tourneys for sure.

Considering the amount of people who own a 3DS compared to Wii U I think it's silly to claim the 3DS Smash community will die out. I really think the problem here is we are splitting Smash 4 in to the "3DS scene" and the "Wii U scene" when really it should just be the "Smash 4 scene". The two games are the same at heart so does it matter which version is played lower down in the brackets when it doesn't need to be streamed?

I'd like to think the 3ds version will surprise us in the form of competitive play. If not, then I think it'd make a great distraction during tournaments or something.
