I was at a tournament a couple weeks ago playing in a low tier doubles match when my controller suddenly stopped working. (I use a classic controller with a black grip. I've convinced some of my friends to use it as well.
) The c-stick on it broke and wouldn't work. This happened to my last classic controller too, so I wasn't really surprised.

It also wouldn't read my inputs though. At random times the controller would "turn off" or skip an input of mine. For example, if I dashed all the way across the stage, I might be forced to stop running as if I let go of the control stick. Then once the small delay/lag (or whatever you'd call it) went away my character would start another dash. I had never experienced this problem before.

A friend of mine let me borrow the extra classic he brought with him for the rest of the tourney. I ended up forgetting to give it back to him afterwards so until we meet again, I'll have his controller.

Now here's the part I don't understand. Just a couple days ago the controller that I borrowed from that friend stopped working. It began having the same symptom of my previous controller in that it would "turn off" at random times. I thought it might just be the batteries, but they were at 3/4 charged.

3 days later (yesterday) I headed over to a friend's place after a football game. We decided to play Smash. About 2 hours into playing he began to complain about his controller not working... He described the same symptoms of my controllers! O_O

We began joking that there may be a timer on the controllers to begin malfunctioning at a certain date- an evil machination to get people to buy more classics, lol. But seriously, we really don't know what the problem is.

Same kind of thing with my XBox 360. People apparently get the 'red ring of death' all the time. It's basically when three of the four controller port lights show up in the color red when you the turn the system on, preventing it from being able to play any games. Apparently it indicates that there's some kind of 'hardware issue' inside the XBox. I don't see how that's possible seeing as I've never moved it and I've rarely even ever touched it (turning it on and off using the controllers).

The whole thing just reeks of a scam considering it spontaneously 'broke down' about two months after the two year warranty expired and it costs 100 dollars US plus tax, shipping and handling, etc. to send it to the US and get it repaired... and they say it will take two to three weeks on average before I get it back. I've been looking forever trying to find a local place that can repair it (if it even really needs repairs) but to no avail.

My Wii remote broke recently, and it'd turn off and back on at random times.

Made playing Virtual Console really lame.

♣ I think the old Classic Controllers before 2008 they stop working because of something. This same thing happen with a friend of mines last year ago, I'm not really sure though, it could be something else. ♥

How often do you play your Xbox, and where is it located? Do you use one of those intercoolers?

If so:
1) Most of the intercoolers for the 360 do more harm then help.
2) Playing for long periods of time heats your 360 to the point where it can damage the hardware.
3) If placed in a "cramped" place, your fans may not be able to do their job as well. Thus heating the 360 further.

My cousin got the RRoD on his first 360, but it turned out he was using an intercooler. Played for periods of 6 hours or longer (whenever I'm over there it's all we really do... he lives in the desert.. so going outside to play isn't exactly fun....) and it was on his cabinet near the back.

He did some research on the RRoD, and stopped using his intercooler. Let's the Xbox cool for 30 minutes every 2-3 hours, and now has it slightly elevated on a custom stand (only 6~ inches tall) on his floor. Hasn't had a problem since.

Yeah, if you're using a Nyko Intercooler, that's it. They were recalled a while back, because they feed directly off of the energy directed to the console. The XBox doesn't get enough power and gets screwed up. :/

I use a classic and it hasn't done anything weird like that, but it is less than a year old so it may be something with pre-2008 controllers.

I have an older Classic Controller as well. Some of the stuff you described sounds like the unfortunately common symptoms of wireless interference that are the price you pay for using a Classic Controller. You know, things like your character rapidly raising and lowering their Shield even though you are firmly holding down the Shield button; dashing/running stopping and starting randomly even though you hold the control stick calmly in place; mistimed inputs, ignored inputs, and occasional input overrides. All symptoms of the Wiimote's pathetically bad connectivity.

I've experienced the more serious failures as well, though. Two days ago I was playing a match as Bowser against a few friends and it suddenly stopped registering left-ward inputs on the control stick and it stopped registering the C-Stick completely. I paused the game, unplugged it from the Wiimote and then plugged it back in; it still didn't work. After about 2 minutes it just spontaneously fixed itself. I'm not really sure what to make of it.

I can't wait until my new GameCube controller arrives (old one broke). 2 week shipping is killing me.

Eh... it may have something to do with moving into my college dorm (My friends just moved in too). I'd imagine there'd be much more devices to interfere with here. :(:(:(

I'm so used to the classic though... It feels so much better than gamecube.

Thanks for everyone's ideas. :/
