[COLLAPSE="Anti-government rant, read at your own risk"]My dad is a small business owner and the current US government is extremely anti-small business, so I know what it's like. He's actually been pretty lucky and managed to stay afloat by laying off half his employees, but he knows a LOT of people in the same field (construction and hot tubs) who are unemployed with no hope of being rehired in the near future because of how ****ed the economy is right now and how much the employers are struggling. Everyone is so "pro-labor, and **** the evil business owners," but they seem to forget that the business owners are the people who innovate, take risks, and hire employees, and they can't do any of that stuff if the government steals all their profits to give to unemployed people who aren't doing anything productive.[/COLLAPSE]Its hard to really explain whats going on, but we have labor as our elected government. Apparently they've been running it so bad, it'll go down into history as the worst ran government in Australia ever! To make it blunt, labor only supports a certain part of the economy, which in reality screws over anyone running a small business. Just any decision they make in general ends up being a complete screw up and they put the county in debt.
My dad works for the defence force, but the labor party pretty much axe all the jobs there. For nearlt 3 years, my parents have had no income because of this. We are pretty close to losing our house and everything else. This is why I want that ***** gone, shes done nothing but take and take from us, and we've had enough of this obviously. I just hope the hell ends asap.
[collapse=Response rant, read at your own risk]The thing with this is, all unemployed people aren't just laying around and mooching off of their unemployment checks. Plenty of unemployed people (consider the working people your dad had to lay off) are trying and searching to get a job but simply cannot because of silly companies with the whole "Unemployed need not apply" BS. It's understandable they want quality workers but shunning many people who can do that kind of quality work (and some even better) just because they're in the stereotypical group of lazies is counter productive to all. Then many of these people who can't find a job for the life of them end up trying to go back to school, taking out loans, getting another major, and finding a job in a different field, all while trying to make it off of unemployment checks. Then the loans pile up on them, and if they don't manage to find a place hiring the unemployed, then they sink into debt and often can never get out before what left they do own is taken from them, and they are on the streets. Many unemployed people do not see the point in this risk at all, and decide to just live off of their checks, which continues the problem as well.[COLLAPSE="Anti-government rant, read at your own risk"]if the government steals all their profits to give to unemployed people who aren't doing anything productive.[/COLLAPSE]

[COLLAPSE="More stuff"]People on unemployment are being paid to do nothing, thus they aren't productive members of society at that point in their lives. I didn't mean to imply that they're lazy though (that would be union workers[collapse=Response rant, read at your own risk]The thing with this is, all unemployed people aren't just laying around and mooching off of their unemployment checks. Now, I'm not saying this to attack you, I'm just ranting about the other side of the problem. Both your dad's situation and the unemployment situation combined are working towards an America with no middle class- simply the rich, and the poor. :/[/collapse]
[collapse=And more stuff]Yes, they're being paid while not being productive members of society, but if everyone who was laid off got absolutely no unemployment, then there would be countless people on the streets, losing their homes, and in general life would me miserable for those whose families have not been able to save up money for their children.[COLLAPSE="More stuff"]People on unemployment are being paid to do nothing, thus they aren't productive members of society at that point in their lives. I didn't mean to imply that they're lazy though (that would be union workers). I know most of them would prefer to be employed, and most employers would like to hire them. The government just has a habit of making things more difficult to both sides.
They've jacked up unemployment insurance something like 300% in the past few years (at least in MD) and now people can stay on unemployment for almost two full years. It's a vicious cycle of removing small business's ability to hire new people and destroying the incentives and opportunities of unemployed people. Government interference doesn't help anyone but they get to say they're "taking care of unemployed people" which buys them votes, which is all they really care about.
I haven't heard of the "Unemployed need not apply" thing. Is there an article about that somewhere?[/COLLAPSE]
[COLLAPSE="And more"]I'm not saying unemployment should be eliminated. It's good in moderation, given to the people who have fallen on hard times and really need it. I'm just saying the government has gone overboard with it and is making the situation worse by giving out so much unemployment (which comes out of employers' pockets) which severely hurts small business's ability to hire them back. It also doesn't help when people flip out when their handouts are scaled back due to economic reality (see: auto unions, or England).[/COLLAPSE][collapse=And more stuff]Yes, they're being paid while not being productive members of society, but if everyone who was laid off got absolutely no unemployment, then there would be countless people on the streets, losing their homes, and in general life would me miserable for those whose families have not been able to save up money for their children.
Even savings run out, and when they do, the same thing would result. I'm not saying they should get to be on it so long, but considering the job market being terrible and businesses being selective as to who they hire (as they should be), less and less people can get jobs. This also isn't even covering those who have a criminal record, who can probably almost never secure a job because of the stigma they carry.
Also, for the Unemployed need not apply: http://www.nytimes.com/2011/07/26/business/help-wanted-ads-exclude-the-long-term-jobless.html
There are several more articles about it also on Google.[/collapse]
