Gen 1, it was Mewtwo: it was bada**, it had the appearance that screamed "I'm gonna kick your a**!", and it was my favorite type: Psychic.
Then came Gen 2. Before it was even released I heard of the two new types of Dark and Steel. Immediately, the idea of having a potential metalic tank/mech for a Pokémon made Steel my favorite type. Then, I saw a picture of Steelix. Even though it sucked, I liked Onix for being what was then the biggest Pokémon. When I saw it got a kicka**-looking evolution that was even bigger and made of iron, Steelix replaced Mewtwo as my favorite.
Then came Gen 3, arguably the most controvesial generation. I'm sitting there with my newly purchased game and guide, waiting for the bus home. I'm flipping through the guide, seeing some of the new Gen 3 Pokémon. Some were cool, whilst others put me off a little. Then I saw it: Metagross. It really caught my eye on just appearance alone. It was hulking, looked like a tank, had a mean expression in its eyes with a bada** "X" on its face! The fact it combined two of my favorite types made it even better. Yeah, there was Jirachi, but I didn't know about it until a couple of months later, so Metagross - for me - is the original Steel/Psychic. Its stats and tier placement didn't matter to me... not that I knew about that stuff at the time anyway. Then I later read in its Dex entry for Sapphire that it pins its prey to the ground and eats the helpless victim with its mouth under its belly. That implies it yells, "I'm gonna kick your a**, and I'm gonna eat you as I do it!"! XD
To this day - even among the myriad of cool Gen 5 Pokémon - no other Pokémon has given me the initial "wow" factor that Metagross did, and thus, after nearly a decade, Metagross has remained my favorite. The fact it has a kicka** shiny (of which I own one) makes it even more awesome to me! >ω<
