http://dsob.wordpress.com/2009/05/13/champions-online-exposure-compilation/ - Rundown Review

For PC and Xbox 360. All games will be on same online server no matter what console you are on.

I am quite excited for this one. The best Superhero MMO since City of Heroes. What makes this game so much more better is its almost limitless customization. Also, it is more action-packed than any MMO to date. No more charging and waiting for attacks to reload. You play it almost like you would in Marvel Ultimate Alliance or X-men Legends. It's all rapid fire, basically.

You can also create your own rival or "Nemesis", that you will encounter as you play the game.

The rundown review pretty much explains the game excellently, as far as what powers are in a set and what not.

Powersets

Ice, Fire, and Electricity
Archery -
Gadgeteering - like Batman or James Bond
Power Armor – like Iron Man
Darkness
Sorcery
Supernatural
Force
Telepathy
Might
Weaponry or Martial Arts

The awesome thing about it is that you don't have to choose just one specific powerset for your hero. For instance, if you want a hero who can shoot fire, ice, and wield a gun, you can. Of course, there will be conditions.

Plus, you can also customize your powers. If you want a laser beam to shoot out your eyes, so be it. The hands? Sure. Your shoulder? They can do that for you. You can change the color, texture, and all that good stuff.

Purple blasts are always awesome for me.

You also have your travel powers:

Flight
Super Speed
Super Jump
Teleportation
Jet Boots - like Iron Man
Acrobatics - like Catwoman, sorta.
Swinging - like Batman, Daredevil, and Spiderman
Ice Slide - like Ice Man
Burrowing - like traveling underground. Similar to Bugs Bunny. lol

I will be pre-ordering this just to get the beta, then I will get the initial game on release date, which is September 1. You also can get a 30-day free trial by pre-ordering as well. This game is really hot, especially for comic book nuts like me.

I've been watching this and Star Trek: Online for quite some time now (they're both being developed by the same studio), and I'm eager for both of them. Telekinetic rampage, anyone?

Haha. That is what I am looking forward. I'll be in beta mid-August. I will be making my ideal heroine. The mix and match powersetting is absolutely incredible.

Eh, it has to beat WoW, and if it's like City of Heroes/Villains, I'll pass. Can you make villains?

It is NOTHING like CoX. lol CoX...

And at the moment, you cannot make villians, but villians are supposedly called "Champions" as well, so maybe a time in the distant future.

And yes, krewman, you can do that when they release the Metamorph patch some time later.

By the way, that was manly as f***.

This game is sexy. M3D will be playing and will be starting a supergroup. Only good kids can apply. Thanks.

No advertising.

I have to say I feel great entering in a hyped MMO at its release. I entered into City of Heroes/Villians just a few months ago, and I feel like a mouse in a metropolis. I am actually new in the MMO department, so this is actually a huge blow in the face with all this customization. I'm gonna be pretty alt-oholic with this one.

COH/COV was just over-hyped trash. The town and models were ugly, and everything was a grindfest. The PVP was passable, but Champions needs to focus solely on PVP to gain anything from WoW. I think I signed up for the beta of Champions.

That is what I hear a lot when I talk to the vets of CoX. Many of them said they would leave CoX in a jiffy for Champions, regardless of any vet rewards or booster packs they gained or bought.

I have also noticed that Bill Roper has been giving a lot of in-depth info on Champion PvP, so I can expect something great. I never even touched CoX PvP. I never lasted that long to care. PvE was already a chore.

But if you pre-order the game, you can get beta for two weeks before the initial release on September 1.

Whats gonna be taking me from CoX (4 year vet) is the fact its actually a designed environment.

In CoX, nearly all the buildings look copy and pasted, aside from the few special buildings here an there. On top if that, the enemy groups are just in mobs, and seem to just be tossed in, and it doesnt look or feel natural to walk past a street corner and watch 12 tsoo standing there, not commiting crime...

In champions, it feels like a whole immersive world with bases, villains that actually do viallainy while you're not there, and instances that arent the same map recycled over and over!

There is one thing Im worried about tho: When there is a free-selection of powers to choose from, how long will it be before it's a FoTM fest when some forum dude figures out the best combination of powers?

Not long. This is one of the huge factors that took down Star Wars Galaxies. One of the best traits in that game was how hard it was to be a Jedi... at first. Once it became known/easy, everyone did it, so there was nothing special about it. The game was player-driven in economy, so the economy started to take a huge hit.

Once people realize one - five character types that work best, everyone will become it.

which I rather hate...however, it seems that the powers themeselves are relativey balanced, but I can see Acrobatics being the most used travel power.

That is one concern I had. I really got tired of seeing Fire/Kins all over the place in CoX. But even so, it doesn't have a direct effect on me. The more unoriginal people become, the greater for me to be unique in the multitude.

Sorry for double post, but they announced the Champions Online Open Beta Client on Fileplanet for August 5, next Wednesday. First 50,000 people in North American can get the download, but you must be subscribed to FilePlanet. I won't have access to strong internet until 9:00 AM, so I hope I make it into the number.

Actually, it's 50,000 for all continents = 50,000 keys to North America, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand

As for FilePlanet, it's $15.95 per quarter.

Shoot. I read it wrong. That makes it even more difficult to catch. Thanks for correcting me.

And no, JOE, I didn't get into beta. Even if I did, I would lie and say that I didn't for confidentiality reasons.

And there are no shards as of yet in Champions Online, so we would be on the same server regardless, M3D. ^_^

NDA's aren't that strict. They actually WANT you to mention you are beta testing the game, but you can't show pictures and stuff.

As for the shards, there will be. It's impossible at this time to have a single server game.

I also thought about the single server thing, but I guess I read the wrong sources. I thought it was legit. Perhaps it was only for closed beta?

Probably.

I read an article by a web guru. He said for a single server game we would need millions per month and technology that hasn't been invented.

The few games I have beta tested as MMOs usually had a "test server".

I'd have bought the Fileplanet subscription, but it's basically $15 for a SHOT at getting the key. Not worth it.

That looks pretty good, I'd love to make a spider-man superhero :p. Idk what powers I would want though. I'm going to keep my eye on this one.
Whatever happened to that Marvel online game that was coming out I wonder?

$200 for a lifetime isn't too shabby. That's a little over a year's worth of subscription money lumped together. I played CoX for over a year, but now I don't have an account. If I spend it all up front and can always come back to the game when I want to, that's a pretty big incentive.

The game is awesome. I was actually able to create my ideal heroine, and the detailing looks great. It releases on September 1st.

And there aren't "shards" like it would be in World of Warcraft or City of Heroes. There are servers, or "districts" as they are called in Guild Wars, and you can move to any of them freely. So you aren't restricted to just one area. Yeah, it still kind of mashes us together with other languages. lol

Well, yeah, the separate server thing is the only way an MMO can work now. Plus, you are in the beta. Beta tests are usually done on one shard. It's just physically impossible for an MMO to not have separate servers with technology as it is.

I saw this on G4 [I know, shame on me] and it looked pretty interesting but I already have my mind set on Aion.

Is there going to be a trial so you can test it before you subscribe [assuming this isn't free]?

30 day free trial when you PREORDER. lol.

There is Open Beta on August 17th, but I think you still have to pay something, or just enter an Open Beta key giveaway contest somewhere.

I see. Guild Wars did it that way, and I that was my first MMO, so I thought it was ok. I personally prefer it the shard way, but I'm not one of those picky players. I learn to deal with alot of the stuff.

Well, Guild Wars wasn't an MMO. It was identical, in design, to Diablo 2, where you have a lobby (in Diablo this was just a large chat room, but in GW it was an actual city or something like that) and "instance games," where each time you enter the "world" you are actually creating a server to play on it, so if people join you, they join the game you create. All of the server load is on the players versus the developers as in MMOs, but this is why you can't just have random people join your world while you are playing.

It's a neat concept, but it's not an MMO because it limits the "massive" part.

This game seems really interesting, but I think I've invested too much in WoW to stray towards any other MMOs, plus, any MMOs Ive joined since I started playing WoW just never have the same feel..

Tried LotRO, CoH, etc.

It said "Bravo!" but it appeared on 4Chan, so I am a bit worried.

The code worked. Where do I download the client?
