I'm a little unclear on how cc grabbing works. Is it basically just shield grabbing while holding down?

After that, when are cc grabs a good idea? Any links to video examples of cc grabs are greatly appreciated.

Sorry but thats not even close to what I'm asking. My question was do I need to shield grab in order to CC grab and what are examples of good situations to cc grab...

Then in my opinion if you need to shield to cc grab, why cc at all?

Just grab.(also Crouch Cancel grab sounds like a really dum idea, do you mean Jump Cancel grab?)

Hold down -> get hit -> jump cancel grab is the way I know to do it.
And it's really useful when you have an opponent who likes to jab -> grab or weak aerial -> grab, because then they run right into Marth's huge grab range before they can get the grab out.

I find that I end up putting up a light shield when I use the jc grab. Just from trying to feel it out on my own it seems like holding down and then shield grabbing slightly afterward (kinda like a jc grab timing with jump > Z) is the most sound way. You can also mash A to avoid worrying about timing and making sure you get the grab off. Correct me if I'm wrong on any of this.

Another question I'd have then is should I basically try to crouch before shielding whenever possible? Would that hurt my ability to DI down and tech if my crappy marth shield fails?

Edit: As far as specific examples I'm wondering if anyone can tell me if its possible to CC grab a falco dair/nair before he can reflect/jab or say a shiek slap before she can sidestep. I'm basically wondering how effective cc grabbing is in situations where trying to shield grab gets you wrecked.

For those of you who don't know, you have to hold forward then press R after you do a Dtilt to shield afterwards. lawl. You can grab out of that too

Well you could utilt.

But anyway, I meant dtilt to JC grab is less work than dtilt, tilt forward, shieldgrab.

you just need to CC then grab.

but some moves will knock you back a little.

so i suggest CC wavedash grab (only if you get pushed back).

cc then either do the input for a shield grab or jc grab

doesn't usually matter which you do although the shield grab one is slower than the jc grab i think
