Hi everyone. I used to play and watch SSB stuff all the time, but once I left college I wasn't able to play anymore, and then the melee scene seemed to die down and a lot of my favorite players quit - so I stopped following things for a long time. Recently I saw SSB4 is coming out (**** yea!), and I decided to check back and see if anything had changed. I noticed my man Silentspectre played in a few tournies and they had some of the new fighting game production stuff on the videos. So if anyone could spare some time to catch me up, I have a bunch of questions: Is the melee tourney scene kind of coming back? Have there been any huge tournaments in the past year or so? Also, whats the deal with the brawl scene? The forums look dead and I can't find a lot of old videos. Is competitive(ish) brawl still around? And finally, what happened to the project M stuff - is it still going to be a thing with SSB4 coming out? Is the project M scene really limited or is there a huge overlap with the melee people? Thanks for reading!

melee tourney scene has been doing just fine with a handful of large tournies in the last year such as: FC10R, APEX2012, ZENITH, SMASHERS REUINION, check this out in the vids section. there are some big ones coming up too & fairly big regionals/smaller local tournaments going on allll the time.

idk about brawl. people are definitely playing competitively still.

project M is still going strong in development & a lotta people are playing the demo--check it out. so far the scene is probably smaller than melee's, but it seems like it's picking up steam & strong melee veterens are digging it (hbox seems especially stoked on it). a lotta melee guys aren't completely sold on it though.

welcome back, just read around & watch vids, you'll catch up in no time.

I think there's been a tournament per week here in Atlantic North with each dishing out about 15 - 20 entrants each. Definitely not dead, if not, getting bigger than before. Hell even the Samus boards are active.

CAN"t WAIT FOR ROM 5!!!

So guys, which scene is bigger? Brawl or melee. I'm asking out of genuine curiosity.

I think brawl is bigger.
But that makes sense, as its more recent and overall sold more copies than melee.

at a lot of the big nationals melee has had equal or more entrants if I'm not mistaken?

Id really love if someone could post the data, I know I've seen it around here somewhere.

Melee is actually growing pretty fast from what I can tell, kinda swinging back from losing alot to brawl. Armada (Peach) from Sweden is the best player right now, having won a few Natss in a row. Mango seems to be getting real serious again to challenge AR in either germany or just the next big us-tourney armada attends.

Melee will rise again

And P:M is gaining quite a following. I'm especially interested in seeing the final build, then ill give my real opinion

Here are the major to mid-major tournaments of 2012:

APEX 2012 (2nd largest Melee tournament of all time)
Wintergamesfest 2012
Zenith 2012
SMYM 13
Northwest Manifest
Smasher's Reunion
IMPULSE
Sunrise Tournament [Japan]
Melee FC-10R
Rule 6
Big House 2
Kings of Cali
RoM 5

then theres stuff like Tipped Off, the second Rule 6, and UCSB which were smaller but had a bunch of big names. And of course, APEX 2013 is right around the corner (January 2013).

Melee scene is doing great imo.

Im really impressed by pm. I think its great. Although I wish the scene for it took it's players from both games, both brawl and melee. All the people who play that game seem to have come from melee. I see it like this, brawl divided smashers, now pm will divide melee players and brawl players will keep playing brawl.

Nahhh I havent heard of a single PM player who has disowned Melee. They just play both games, the skill sets are practically interchangeable

PM will be played largely by Melee players, but almost all of them will be playing PM alongside Melee, instead of abandoning Melee. I really don't think PM will divide Melee players.

PM is what brawl should have been.

Brawl mains switch to PM full time, melee mains play it as a side event. It's just good for everybody.

Awesome - thanks for all the replies guys. I've started checking out some of the tournies listed here and they're freaking great. I really hope the melee scene stays strong. I checked the project M site and a bunch of vids and it looks great too. I'm going to download it as soon as Ivysaur gets released. :bluejump:

Once again, really appreciate the info guys.
