Aside form peoples concern over competitive gamepley, there is the problem most of us have with Wii's online network. The general concesus is that it blows in comparison to X-Box Live.
So lets look at the drawbacks first.

-No voice chat
-Long Wii code input as opposed to standard Username
-Strict policy against social networking through their WiFi services
-Lag time

These are a Wii issue. As for Brawl's own drawbacks Ill list the big ones.

-No ranking
-No name showing in random matchmaking
-No written taunts in random matchmaking

Now lets look at the pluses

-Free
-First Smash game with Online play
-Multiple online modes (homerun, spectating, etc.)
-Picture swap
-Stage builder exchange
-No random smack talking
-No incentive for people to quit in the middle of a matches in random mode
-Sandbag practice during load screen
-No having to deal with random sickos, sexual predators, trolls, flamers, etc.

Now for the unknowns

-Items switch/ level preferences in random match mode?
-Online tournament mode?
-Possible to invite people from online to Friends list?

Perhaps I forgot a few things, so let me know what everyone thinks.

In my opinion Nintendos policy towards online gaming has really hindered the potential of Smash. This is of course beyond the decision making of the developers and Mr. Sakurai. However, the lack of a ranking system and the total block on Random match identities is baffling.

In any event this info is mostly going by what is posted on the Dojo site. Sakurai also mentioned that they are still trying to include other ideas and modes, and the final game is still subject to change. We wont really know until the Japanese version comes out. But seeing how I am in Japan I will buy the game at midnight on the 24th, and online mode is one of the first things Im going to check. Ill post my observations and impressions shortly afterwards (Jan 23rd around 9am PT Stateside) .

I think this online will be perfect
Its free, and I'll have way more fun with this than I ever will with Xbox Live

I would love to see this be more like xboxlive. You have a recent players list, send friend requests to people you meet online, host custom games and invite them. It would be much easier. But then again, this game is being targeted to a younger audience, rather than older competitive players.

I actually like it without a ranking. If they don't include one, I would suspect it's because they want to encourage casual play just as much as competitive play. Then again, ranking can also give people something to strive for even though they'll never make it to the top.

But anyway, even if those things you mentioned there dont make it in, I'm sure Brawl's online play will be amazing. Just the -idea- of being able to play against people from around the world without having to leave your home is great.

I'm perfectly happy with they way Nintendo has it set up. As far a voice chat goes, I use it for Online RPGs and thats it.

I really don't feel like being called a... well, just watch the Episode of Yu-Gi-Oh Abridged where Yami spends about a min. cursing at Yugi.

LOL. YU GI OH ABRIDGED FTW!

Anyway, the voice chat usually isn't as spammed as much as you think during online play. Well, for halo this is true.

Although we are dealing with a younger population and in Halo you can't talk to everyone during play, so I can certainly see a problem there.

You're right, I've never about the pros that way before. There won't be random weirdos or people who quit in the middle of a match. That's actually really cool.

The only thing I mind is no ranking system. It would just be so much more fun if you could get an even match every time. And it would be awesome practrice. But instead, we'll just have to deal with battling people with completely random skill level.

Agreed. It would be cool if you could go to the leader board (if one is in the game) and challenge anyone on it.

I'm just happy there's an online feature. The 'Play With Anyone' option and exchanging of wii codes sound a little annoying, but I don't care about a ranking mode as a lot of people (including myself) would disconnect if they're losing badly.

I know the feeling, just watch me lose at an online game of Super Mario Strikers: Charged.

I've never played Strikes, so this question goes out to anyone who has:

How do you feel about the random matches. I mean, do you think you're generally even matched? Or are you either destroyed by some expert or just crush some newb who barely knows the controls. Because that's my biggest fear with Brawl - that I'll never get an even match.

it would help if they kept track of records and just matched you with similarly ranked people. it is supposed to work that way in PBR, does for me.

I have had a few even matches, most of the time I can't even get the ball and the guy scores before I can even figure out where the ball is.

I'm like you on Strikers: Charged. I'm a sore loser and that game pisses me off so much sometimes. It's a wonderful game but it really challenges my aggression like no other game I've ever play before. So when I lose on an online match I end up turning it off before it can save my rank.

To answer the question, I often find myself matched up with someone stronger than me, resulting in a beating. There are times when I get matched with someone at my same level though and it's a nice enjoyable match, whether I win or lose.

I'm sure this will be different with Brawl though. Smash Bros. will probably be a lot easier to become skilled in than Strikers, if you ask me. On top of that, there will be a larger audience for Brawl. The majority of that audience will be casual players and noobs so it will be a nice even and fair match for most people. Strikers' audience is very small and limited compared to what it could be, which is why it matches you up with pros a lot.

i think the lag will be significantly less when playing someone closer to your home

online tournaments would kick ***! that is if everyone has fast source of internet....

headsets would be nice but unlikely

Lag isn't merely a Wii issue, it's a universal online issue. It doesn't matter if you have the most advanced paid servers or a free Wifi service, there's going to be lag in similar amounts.

I'm predict6ing that the default of non-friends matches will be Items set to Normal flow. I think that they will let you change it in a friendly match.

As long as Brawl has as little lag as Phantom Hourglass for DS, I'm prefectly fine with what Nintendo has set up.

The lag time should be improved by the time they release the game, Nintendo know the high reputation that the Smash Bros. series must maintain so will probably try to feed connections through their own servers, allowing for lag-free, normal-speed play. Psy.

Wow. brawl is having frind codes NOT WII CODES. theres Nothing wrong without having any rankings thats why tournaments exist. why would you want to see peoples name in random search. so you can brag about who you beat in a match.

Also, this is the first time Nintendo is globally going online with ANY of their games. The Wi-fi is still somewhat new.

As compared to other online companies that had it since PS2/Xbox was released. Meaning, Nintendo is almost a generation behind in online-play, but that's no problem. It's still good.

But if it was like Mario Kart DS online-play...I would be disappointed..For some reason I just wasn't having much fun on wi-fi with mario kart ds. I think I did wi-fi for Mario Kart maybe 6 times, then eventually stop. It was either because of snaking or people obsessed with their winning records. And no, snaking is nothing compared to wave dash as far as game breaking goes.

A casual Vs a Wavedasher has a chance of atleast KO'ing them once, but as for a snaker you pretty much lost the entire race, and even overlapped.

Though the online services could be better, I'm content with the online services provided. It's a good thing Smashboards exists so I can challenge people here. Watch out for me, guys...

...What? Both Mario Kart DS and Metroid Hunters had an option to challenge people around the world or regionally, this is far from Nintendo's first global online venture. As far as I'm concerned the DS was Nintendo WiFi's testing grounds so using the "generation behind" argument is almost invalid here (also note that neither the PS2 or Xbox were online out of the box so their lead is minimized again by that aspect). Being online alone just isn't good enough anymore with the new technologies constantly coming out by the competition and Nintendo has yet to show that they're really serious about going online, with the Wii specifically. How long has the DS had voice chat? At its most limited form back in the "Lobby" of a Metroid Hunters match 2-3 years ago? Now it's happening regularly in Friend based Pokemon Diamond and Pearl matches and will be a feature in the soon-to-be released Advanced Wars for the DS. The issue here isn't Nintendo's experience with Online it's how far they're choosing to go with it on the console front.

Wow, what extreme bias. Everyone tells everyone to completely ignore the negatives. In this day, the online is definately s standard, but Nintendo should definately be more in depth with their online than they are.

It'll be easy enough to find people on smashboards and other forums to fight. Though a friend request to a good player after a "Play with anyone" match would be good.
