I guess the easiest way to describe Evangelion is if you took the tone of Mother 3 and added mechs to it. And maybe threw in some disturbing imagery here and there.
I haven't seen it in full myself, but I'm aware of what it's about and it's popularity.
Granted it's a bit too dark for my tastes, but it's one of the most acclaimed anime so...
