Could be interpreted one of two ways.
1) "No longer feels right" means that Smash 4 plays a lot better now and really just feels like a better version of the game than melee ever was. (This is highly unlikely)
When you compare a product that has spent a longer time cooking in the oven versus a product that was undercooked to be put out for a last minute dinner, the bolded doesn't hold true.
Clunky is the definition of Melee. He just might be referring to that. Not saying it is a bad game but notice how he doesn't bring up Smash 64 or Brawl. Alternatively, maybe he didn't touch those two games to compare but as it stands today, Melee isn't the
perfect game that many people believe. Far from it in terms of gameplay and polish. The biggest factor being that there was a seven year gap between Melee and Brawl. Nothing to compare Melee and no impending release any time soon up until Brawl's announcement in 2005.
I think people's expectations are clouding judgement on later iterations for the series and are often overzealous about later Smash Bros titles. It's tragic, really. And it creates this huge divide int he community that doesn't have to be there.
In any case, Smash 4 is set to be the best in the series with the amount of content, work they put into balancing, characters, stages, music and a bountiful of other neat shenanigans that I think a huge Nintendo fan would enjoy.
Competitive players? Well, obviously there are many who are passionate and love Nintendo's properties but it sounds like the most vocal aren't in the loop when it comes to franchises outside of Smash Bros based on my observations. No shade, but one shouldn't hold their opinion so highly when they've been in a bubble the whole time and downplaying what they deem as
casual's say or believe when they [casuals] often enjoy Smash Bros for more reasons than one. I see that a lot here and it is objectively clear that Smash Bros was designed to cater a broad audience and not just one. It shouldn't lose its competitive image just because it isn't exactly the same or like a rushed launch game from over 10 years past.
But even then, come release of the 3DS and later the Wii U version and within months, there should be no surprise when the forums get overtaken by threads bashing Smash 4 and holding Melee high and above. I believe Melee will always have its big fanbase but it's discouraging to see people get swayed so easily and feel like they HAVE to go back to an old game because "You're not serious if you don't play Melee."
Complete rubbish.
Hyperbole: Melee is bad because it doesn't have the great Lady Palutena.
EDIT: I just want to make something clear...
I have
FABULOUS memories of all Smash Bros. games. I enjoyed them for what they were at the same and what they mean to me today. I may prefer one over the other, but at the end of the day, it's a great series and I think that lots of people are robbing themselves from enjoying the games. Loosen up and have fun. This shouldn't be a grand issue. I understand people are passionate about the competitive side of Smash Bros but that shouldn't be the forefront of enjoying a video game.
