Ike is truly the best choice, and not because I main him. Ike can get punished easily, which trains the noobs to shield and NOT spam attacks. Metaknight would only cause noobs to spam AUREGEREGEREGA forever. Ike would be slow and teach noobs to use attacks wisely. If you can get good with Ike, you will be able to very quickly master faster chars like Marth, Fox & Gang, etc, but if you start training with the faster guys, you will find that slower characters will be much harder to deal with.

^^ Lol at your sig. It's Azen II!!

But you make a good point about Ike, except if they hit ONE fsmash, they'll spam it for all eternity. Oh, and make sure they don't play on wifi as Ike. Ike is god tier on wifi.

Snake, Mewtwo, and Mr. Saturn are all good options.

But in all reality, the easiest is either Lucario or Meta Knight.

Mario. He goes all the way back to the most basic strategies. Not only that but he actually takes some amount of skill to play well (at least, well against a computer/other noob. Against anyone with experience you may as well pick Ganon and then turn on a handicap for you).

Most of these responses are stupid. You should start with a character that takes A LOT of skill to use. That way you can get better, quicker. If you pick an easy character to learn then you're wasting time. Pick a character that you like, regardless of any other input.

Characters like Sheik or Fox will help them learn how to combo.

Squirtle, Jigglypuff, or Diddy Kong can teach a good air game (especially WOP).

Ike, Meta Knight, and Pikachu are really good if you don't have any skill.

But really, I agree with Painted Ghost. Beginner players should use whoever they like.

G&W is the easiest character to pick up and be good with by far.

jump, dair, dsmash
jump, dair, dsmash
jump, diar, dsmash
grab, dthrow, dsmash

throw in the occasional judgement and fsmash and you've got a tourney viable character that will get you through the first 2 or 3 brackets of most tourneys.
