Will let you make that, StarFox?

April 19, 2010 - The director of Bayonetta and Okami wants to make a Star Fox game, and it looks like the only thing holding him back is Japan's tough stance on guns.

A Twitter follower pointed Platinum Games' Hideki Kamiya to a recent European interview in which Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto expressed interest in seeing a new Star Fox game made. Replied Kamiya: "I want Nintendo's staff to come to Platinum, stick guns at us and tell us 'You guys make a new Star Fox.'"

Kamiya appears to be a big fan of the series -- particularly Star Fox 64. In a later Tweet, Kamiya recalled his entry into Capcom. He submitted two design documents as part of his application. One of these involved wolves, and went on to become Okami. The other was a 3D shooter. After later playing Star Fox 64, however, Kamiya was so satisfied that he felt there was no longer a need to make a shooter.

It'd be nice if he could make a new Starfox game.
Nintendo really should let him make a Starfox sequel.

I'd definitely buy it considering he loved SF64.

I'm sure with the art and animation of Okami and Bayonetta, it'll be dazzling as well.

After such big successes with the previous games he has a lot riding on his shoulders if he takes on StarFox. It sounds like a great change though, I look forward to seeing this happen!

And yet another instance of Nintendo outsourcing their core franchises to other developers, though not the first time for Star Fox. Honestly, it's the best thing Nintendo can do for their IPs because as Reggie recently admitted to, "we're just not good at making games." I'll dig that interview up if need be.

I haven't read that article with him saying that. That's pretty amusing.

I wonder how Nintendo chooses which games to be developed by third party developers.
After making Starfox 64, I'm pretty sad that Nintendo didn't make a sequel by themselves.

Well they did, Rare made Adventures while they were still owned by Ninty.

I'm pretty sure this is the interview your looking for. In it he says there not good at making games like Bioshock, not games in general.

Star Fox pretty much has the potential to become a game like Bioshock 2....in some sense. The whole Star Fox universe has untapped potential, and it's just waiting for that person to unlock it.

But, I'm not going to diverge my ideas. Doing so will become a "theoretical game" and will get this thread closed more faster that a McDonalds with 30 fat people in it.

Sega did an amazing job with F-Zero, Capcom's handheld Zeldas are great, and Retro made Metroid into one of the highlights of the last generation.

I have no problem with Starfox getting outsourced, although I hope the results are better than Adventure.

All they have to do is just play it safe. No new mechanics, no new protagonist characters and no retcons.

I mean, they could always pick up and combine the 9 star fox command endings.

You do know that most of those endings contradicted each other, right?

I loved SFA, but my opinion doesn't mean much when the majority of the public isn't as fond as I am.

They totally need to take that F-Zero ending and merge it with the F-Zero universe. Or go the Marcus route and base a game around that set of characters. Though it seems unnecessary given the fact that the normal Star Fox cast has hardly been fleshed out yet at all.

But that was basically the cancelled N64 Dinosaur Planet, but with Starfox characters so I don't think it really counts...at least to me anyways.
That's like saying Super Mario Bros. 2 doesn't count because it was originally Doki Doki Panic in Japan. Or to a lesser extent, saying The Wind Waker doesn't count because it was originally planned to look like the demo shown at Spaceworld 2000.

The first part of this statement is accurate, the second part is not. Whether it looked different or not, WW was always a Zelda game. SMB 2 basically got retconned into continuity by putting elements of it in other games, like Birdo.

Hence "to a lesser extent". I was just trying to think of another similar example where a core Nintendo title was adapted from a different concept, and after Doki Doki Panic, nothing else rang a bell. More specifically 'another concept' that was actually publicly revealed because in development, tons of concepts are always thrown around. The Spaceworld 2000 Demo was momentous in that people knew about it and anticipated a Zelda game in its style, but were treated to something else entirely.

Please please please happen! I've never played Bayonetta or Okami, but if anyone's interested in making the next Starfox game...just do it! (and do a good job, of course)
