Banned move midway through tournament

I went to a tourney this Saturday and I was watching a match between a snake and a kirby. Midway through the match, the TO banned motar sliding or "snakedashing" right in the middle of his match. Luckily he wasn't banned immediately, but this affected his gameplay because he uses motar sliding on instinct.

The tourney thread stated that "glitching or unfair play....will result in a match reset". It never specified what moves were considered "glitched" or was "unfair play".

This was my second tournament and I just wanted thoughts and opinions from people who have had much more tournement experience than I have.

This is an example of a bad TO.

In other words: what happened to you happens at tournaments with a lot of novice players. Essentially, the novices can't deal with it, so instead of trying to figure out how, they just ban it. This happens with experienced players too sometimes, like when they run into wobbling, they cry ban rather than figure out how to deal with it.

This is terrible form on the TO's part as it is their responsibility to know this sort of thing should crop up before hand. If they plan to ban such a move at the very least you have to notify your participants before the tournament begins as many wouldnt want to participate in an environment that limits their playing style.

I was actually playing against a spammy Pikachu. Not a Kirby.

And yes, that Snake was me. Worst. Tournament. Ever. But many people have gone into the thread to share their thoughts, so I hope that TO learns the folly of his ways.

You should have asked for a refund SamuraiPanda =/ That's not the rules you agreed to before you entered the tournament.

This reminds me of Halo 2 tournaments that banned BXRing...

don't ever go to tournaments that aren't run by people who actually know what they're doing. Chances are pretty good the rules will be garbage, the tournament will be set up poorly, and the winner will be cheated out of a large percentage of his money.

I went to this Brawl tournament the day before it came out in some podunk little Mississippi town and the prize was supposed to be a copy of Brawl. Then during the winners finals the store manager said there weren't enough people to justify giving away Brawl so instead he'd be giving away 2000 Wii points (or whatever $20 worth is). My friend and I had driven over three hours. We were ****ing pissed.

Bottom line, some people should have their stores burned down.

That's a pretty stupid ban.

But banning it during a tournament? That's offensive. If the TO could change rules on a whim like that, he could pretty much do anything else and determine exactly who will win.

If you're going to ban something, at least wait until the next tournament so you can give people a heads up.

edit: Wow, i just looked at the thread. I can't believe that tournament didn't do worse. He doesn't even have specific rules. Something like "whatever I think is glitchy you can't use," with no examples at all.

This is more of an example of an idiot and a scrub.

What a friggin' idiot. "Glitches will result in a match reset"? Since when was that ever a viable rule in Competitive play? The majority of Competitive fighting games have glitches which are not only tourney-legal but vital to Tourney play.

And if you ban all glitches in Brawl, then, well, hmmm...

"Glitches will result in a match reset." I would love to see that as a rule for a Melee tournament hosted by this guy.

What? Mortar sliding was intentional. Just look at Snake's mortar: it has some tiny wheels. That mortar was designed to slide great distances.

I posted in the thread linked. Hopefully the noob learns to not be ********. I'll certainly never come up to MI for one of his tournaments.

Wavedashing was banned. And shorthopping and L-Canceling counted as wavedashing and were thus also banned.

If glitches result in a match reset, then glitchers have the ultimate weapon! They can "glitch" just before they lose resulting in 'No Contest'.

Like Ankoku said, this TO has actually had some Melee tournaments before. Wavedashing was banned. In fact, my roomate (Vayseth) was hosting a tournament there as an employee, and this TO, a friend of the owner or something, got Vayseth fired from working there. Because Vayseth didn't ban wavedashing.

When I went to this tournament, I was giving him the benefit of the doubt and hoped he wouldn't do something stupid. My mistake.

Being a TO I can say straight up that it's common practice for some sort of policy banning moves or glitches during a tournament to be implimented in most rule sets (that goes for just about any game). Essentially what that means is that if a TO/judge notices something out of the ordinary that was not caught before, they hold the right to make a ruling on it in mid-tournament. With that said, I've never once banned a move/arena/anything in mid match, just simply waited until the next round pairings were announced to also announce a ban and give a detailed explanation.

Closest thing I've done to it is announcing a ban on vehicles in a Halo 3 tournament I held last month after the first round that took longer than expected due to players choosing Valhalla and taking joy rides.

A case like the one mentioned could have easily been avoided if the TO had taken the time to learn a game thoroughly before choosing to do a tournament on it. I refuse to host a tournament on a game that I haven't taken the time to play and try to master myself. Granted I can't say I'm the best at any of them, but I can say that I at least take the time to play them enough to get a firm grasp on what's fair in a tournament environment and what's not. Sounds to me that this person was simply inexperienced and that definitely showed in this case.

Haha, I read the entire thread...
Epic delivery :bee:
I mean, I'm expecting a boycott from the advanced smashers...I don't even keep up with Brawl and I think this is ridiculous.

Whut?

How the f*** does smash tournament have anything to do with real life work? That's no excuse in firing a worker.

Wow, that guy is just a plain scrub and a really bad TO. If anything, he should make any and all bans clear at the start of the tournament so that they people signing up know exactly what rules they will be playing as.

When someone gets fired for not being a scrub, I think it's time to burn down their store. Arson remedies a lot of problems.
