Smash Ace

resumed serious exercise with my balls recently after several months of inconsistent practice. i couldn't remember if i had started in the summer of 04 or 05. then i remembered that i'd made a post about it a long time ago. baoding balls. rereading that thread got me wondering about these exercises have actually improved my game or helped at all.
i know that my hands are stronger and more dexterous than they would have otherwise been and that my hands don't feel thrashed nearly as much after several hours of practice as they did back when i'd made that thread. i play harder, faster and longer, but less frequently. its unusual for me to play on consecutive days and most of the time several days to a week go by before i play again. although i'm sure exercising my hands helps, rest is probably the main reason for my loss of finger/hand discomfort.
i'm certain that it (hereafter refered to as palmspinning because baoding ball exercises is too long) doesn't help with high level skills. smash involves very rapid, random and isolated finger movements. comparatively palmspinning is slow, rhythmic and it involves the entire hand. i remember trying to palmspin between tournament matches and it just distracted me and quickly took me out of the zone. although, there was a time, after i played a tournament set with azen for the first time, when palmspinning was useful. i struggled technically during our matches and after the match my hands were trembling badly. i must have pushed the speed of my fingers hard. i couldn't calm them down fast enough with just rest and i knew that it would screw me if i stayed like that into my next set. so i started palmspinning and after a minute or two my hands relaxed and i was good to go.
palmspinning isn't useful in warming up before my first match of the day or cooling down after the last match. palmspinning before the first match doesn't do anything noticable for me. its better if i just physically warm my hands up by putting them in my pockets and play the first few practice matches slow. after the last match, i always feel like resting my hands. palmspinning seems to do more harm than good at the end of the day.
all in all, palmspinning is mostly detremental to my game just before, during and just after a smashfest/tournament. however, it has strengthened my entire hand and has probably been helping my game in subtle ways through my steady improvement in hand strength and dexterity over several years
LOL @ the fact that i still carry the backpack full of bouncy balls
