When Super Smash Bros. Melee was on the road to release, Sakurai kept the Japanese fans of the series up-to-date on what was happening with the game on a site called “Smabura-Ken”. Smabura-Ken was only available in Japanese, although Nintendo of America maintained their own site at smashbros.com that included much of the same information on characters and stages. After Melee was released and Sakurai began revealing hidden characters and stages on Smabura-Ken, the same characters and stages would simultaneously be revealed on the American site.
When Smash Bros. Dojo!! was launched as our source for Brawl news, it proved interesting for the fact that it provided updates not only in Japanese, but in English, German, French, Spanish, and Italian. Despite the fact that only the Japanese site featured some of the polls that were held soon after Brawl’s announcement, the daily updates have been pretty consistent across all the sites.
Of course, “pretty consistent” isn’t the same as “entirely consistent,” and localizing the updates for each region has created slightly different versions of each post. Some are just interesting to note, but one or two might even have implications for Brawl. Hit the break and see what happens when you read between the lines.

With some of the more recent character updates, we’ve seen Sakurai provide us a banner warning us that a newcomer is about to enter the game. The banner reads, “Warning! Challenger Approaching!”, just like you’d see in Melee before fighting a character to unlock. Some have taken this to mean that the characters in these updates are hidden in the game, and we’ve done our part here by marking our posts before we mention them.
It’s true that some of these characters are later seen in updates without any kind of warning, both ones directly relating to the character, and others that just show the character in the game. And it’s also true that Sakurai didn’t reveal any secret characters on Smabura-Ken before the game was released, and Snake (who has been conspicuously absent since the Dojo relaunched) has been said to be a secret character. With that said, though, the reality of the situation might be better explained by how international fans of the games see these updates.
Before a newcomer is revealed, for example, the Spanish see this:
<p style="text-align: center"><img src="http://smashboards.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2007/08/ike_070801e1.jpg" alt="ike_070801e1.jpg" /></p>
which roughly translates the same way as the English warning (my rudimentary Spanish skills suggest that it’s something like “Danger! A rival is coming!”). However, if Sakurai is trying to warn us before we see the new characters that are about to enter the game, the truth is he’s doing quite a disservice to Japanese visitors. Here’s what they saw when Ike was revealed:
<p style="text-align: center"><img src="http://smashboards.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2007/08/ike_070801ejp.jpg" alt="ike_070801ejp.jpg" /></p>
Now, here’s what they saw when the Pokémon Trainer was revealed:
<p style="text-align: center"><img src="/blog/wp-content/uploads/2007/08/pokemon_trainer_070813j.jpg" height="85" width="479" /></p>
Curious that the warnings aren’t the same, right? Not really—the warnings themselves contain the names of the characters! According to our resident interpreter SamuraiPanda, this banner simply reads “Pokémon Trainer Enters!!” (He notes that “the word for ‘enters’ has the connotation of entering into a war.”)
Now, it would seem that if Sakurai really wanted to make sure people wouldn’t spoil themselves, he wouldn’t have the Japanese site posting giant banners with spoilers on them. So why include them in the first place? Probably just to call attention to the fact that these characters are new, just like the “Newcomer” stills that were in the first Brawl trailer. And the fact that the other regional sites don’t seem to honor this is probably just an artifact of the localization process.
The bottom line? In my view, at least, it’s not entirely likely that Ike and Pokémon Trainer (or Red, if you prefer) will end up being unlockable characters. My guess is they’re starters, and Sakurai just likes calling attention to them. The reason we think otherwise is simply due to how things get translated across the regional Dojo sites, and the real unlockables will be revealed after the game hits shelves.
