Are the characters really aware of each other?

There's a couple screen shots... maybe I'll modify this and post them later... that appear to show that the characters are truely aware of each other's prescence. Maybe this has already been addressed... please share any knowledge on it. Mario is running away from wario who it appears just received a gooey bomb. Mario is running the opposite direction and yet he's looking back at Wario. There's a couple others, I'll find them if people are confused... but they're all there. What is this sort of technology called? Is it the same stuff that Lucas is using in the new sith lord game that will be coming out next year?

The question is... is diddy looking at his opponent? or just in that general direction? What happens if the character jumps over diddy as he's attacking? Do his eyes follow?

Yoshi appears to be watching Diddy... samus obviously is getting owned.

I think you get the point.

dude that's some trippy stuff, lol. Peach's smash turns into a kiss when facing Mario or.....so we say, Bowser? Oh what? Like you don't already know. Yoshi had Mario's baby, too. Yea I said it. The eggs doesn't just pop out nowhere, children.

I assume you are refering to LucasArt's upcoming game the Force Unleashed. I think it is a different, more complex program but Smash is on a similar track.

EDIT: I just remembered that both Force Unleashed and Brawl are using Havoc, but I think that program just makes the character's weight come into play. For example, Bowser would fall faster than Kirby and such. I'm getting off track though. It is possible that they would make Nana smarted then the average bear.

I think it's safe to say that your characters will keep their eyes on their opponents, even when they are turned around.

Funny you should mention Force Unleashed. One of the tech demo videos they released showed a Stormtrooper being thrown with the Force off a cliff. The trooper grabbed ahold of the nearest ledge and when a second Stormtrooper was force thrown, he grabbed the foot of the previous trooper as he dangled by the edge.

If Brawl is using similar technology, this could mean great news for the Ice Climbers. One of the biggest faults with the Climbers right now is if they grab the edge, Popo hogs it and poor Nana falls to her death (ironic since the opening FMV of Melee shows Nana saving Popo's sorry butt). If the Ice Climbers are more aware of where they are to each other and opponents, this may mean better AI for Nana and possibly the ability to catch each other while holding onto the edge, similar to the stormtroopers.

Nana falling to her death is supposed to happen. It's the Ice Climbers weakness.

It's all about the balance!

Yeah, I saw those demos... that looks pretty fun... go wii for having the duel mode.

It still would be cool.

At first I thought Sakurai just edited the screenshots...But now that I see how many of them are like that, I think it's a graphical addition. Nice touch indeed.

@OP: I don't know what you mean. Have they ever not been aware of each other?
Did you even read the thread? It's not a hard concept.

And yea, it's a nice touch alright. I wonder if anything besides just the eyes follow the opponents.

It'll give this game the lasting polish that will forever drive us away from melee gaming. I believe brawl may do that. This game will be hopelessly awesome. The only comparison I can make is PKMN Ruby to Diamond (except 72 times better).

Ya.. this is really old news.
You have to remember, just because you've seen it before, doesnt mean everyone has.

Its new news to me, and actually really interesting. I for one though sakurai was just editting it, but i really don't think he's doing it anymore.

What we're saying is the characters look at each other. If you look at the screen shots you will notice the eyes are looking at the other players.

This evidence definitely helps. Of course, I wasn't really thinking about it as I was pondering about what other things Brawl may offer. There's that, and I was aware of this before.

It is old but I'm still undecided. I mean how would that work. If you're running away from someone, their head turns? And in a four player battle who does your character look at? The closest one or what?

I think most of those are staged.

You've pretty much answered you own statements. The Mario running away from Wario pic proves that they watch the opponent they flee from. Im sure that they character's eyes will follow the character closest to them, which explains why in this pic Meta's eyes are following the character he strikes.

See Meta focused on Link rather than Zelda or Bowser?

I sugguested that they do this along time ago and everyone ignored me. . .

But look at this. . . one of the first screens on the site.

Look at Fox NOT looking at the others. . .
Now look at this one that came later with the Mario SS stage.

They added it around the Googly bomb time.

@Black/light:

That's a little hard to tell, with the bad Fox angle, he could still be staring into space, imo.

I'm optimistic. Just one heads up to make. Most of these shots are from sweet angles... the top shot is live action (notice the stats show). I just hope Mr. Sakurai is yanking our chain with some of the pics and making it look better than it really is. I wouldn't be surprised though if the game does have this nice little touch. Where it would look really cool is when you have a fighter between two others... and he's either looking back and forth... or he turns his head when the character behind him starts charging/jumping at him.

One thing is for sure about this, though; this added detail will make for GREAT in-game snapshots.
