Anyone interested in a Midlands tournament?

Hi,

I know I haven't been on the forums much, but I noticed that there aren't many tournaments for the Midlands area. Would anyone in or around this area be interested in a tournament for Brawl? It would be based in Northamptonshire, be run alongside another event that a mate of mine runs and be a monthly event. However, due to a limited setup ie. 1 Wii and 1 copy of Brawl (USA) the number of entrants would be limited unless someone was able to help with another set of equipment. Details are thin at the moment, cause it's only an idea and I need to discuss this with the main event runner. But, I wanted to see if I can get some interest first before going ahead trying to put something together for April if allowed.

Thoughts/Suggestions?

Hey man, nice to see you posting on the forums and getting involved in the UK scene. Ive been involved in it since the start and have hosted four successful tournaments :). I hope you take my following views and tips on board from experience;

The UK scene atm has around 40 active members. With around 30 turning upto each tournament. As you can guess from these numbers there arent many players per city or even county. Therefore, aiming your tournament for the midlands area won't work, it'd have to be a national thing. I can tell you theres a handful of players in your area. As a result you would need to find a suitable venue to host a large tournament and provide housing for two nights. Housing is a necessity in british tournaments due to the distance people travel and the fact that tournaments generally take an entire day.

Ive posted a thread regarding myself hosting the first large UK brawl tournament here :

http://smashboards.com/showthread.php?t=144898

Having hosted previous tournaments and being involved in the community for a longtime I should be able to attract 20-30 people (im hoping for a great turnout) aswell as get approx. 10 setups together. Maybe you could come to this tournament with any of your friends? get to know the community and then use the experience and the fact people will have met you to host a larger tourney later? theres no harm trying to get people to come over to you prior to this and have smashfests etc.

Its great to see new posters. Hopefully after the release of PAL brawl things will be different and hosting local tournaments with large turnouts will happen :)

Although if you got alot of interest id try my best to make it :)

Edit: That sounded negative. Just given you an insight on how normal tourneys are done. If you got a decent turnout sorted i.e. 20 people (less and id call it more of a smashfest), a large enough venue, prize money ( singles is normally £5 each, doubles £10 / team) then id turn up and bring a car full of people. Would be able to bring two wii setups. Oh, if you did do for this properly youd need tvs aswell.

That's where I would fall flat on my heels because housing would be difficult. The tournament would be run from only 9-about 4 and I wouldn't be sure of another venue. Also travelling to other tournaments far away on this forum is difficult for me because I'm busy as a final year uni student. What if I tried to drum up local interest from elsewhere not just from this forum?

Hey dude. We've tried to drum up interest from other boards since melee was released. I think at this point you'd find it very difficult to find interest online. You may get lucky in finding maybe a handful of people, due to people be about because of brawl, but from experience I wouldn't expect much more.

I think you'd struggle with only have one wii aswell :/

Also, my tournaments only 3 hours away from you and at the end of the uni year? you sure you wouldnt make it? I think if your wanting to get involved then itd be a helpful step. What you studying?

You maybe able to drum up interest in local independant game shops or at your uni. Other than that its waiting till brawl is actually released here! When it is I think you will be fine and have a healthy community to tap into, esp with the amount of citites that are around you.

Animation Design. Flippin hard work. Well it was only an idea, I knew it probably wouldn't be a success anyway but I'll see what happens, I'll certainly get involved in Wi-Fi gaming when the USA version comes out though.

Wi-Fi doesnt work, lags to much. I doubt itll ever not lag enough to make it competitive. In person tournaments are much better ;) . Id try your uni, probs the best bet for finding players. Im going to do the same at mine and other local unis when brawl hits.

Do you have msn mate?
