A few points here:

1: The whole issue over the CPU players taking place on disconnections is mostly due to the way it looks like Brawl loads it's data, unlike many other online games, the game has to go continuiously with the same thing going all the time. If a player disconnects, unless something immedently took over, the only solution would be to cancel the entire match, it is simply an attempt to remove the frustration involved with people constantly disconnecting in random games.

2: The whole thing of the silent random games is just Nintendo usual way of dealing with things that seem threating to him, Brawl will be a bigger seller for the Wii, but that makes them even more paranoid then usual concerning the whole privacy issue, it's not often mentioned, but there is alot more involved here then just Sakurai.

3: I am slightly disappointed at the whole stock/time issue, but really, Random just seems to be design for quick short matches, so I guess to me there little to get worked up about.

4: Finally, get over it... this is hardly worth getting as worked up about as some of you are making this out to be...

If tourney people consider themselves so good I don't think items should effect them that much, but then again maybe spending to much time away from items makes them more likely to be killed by one...
Yeah. A competitive player's mindgames can truly affect the frequency that explosive crates fall! Hell, competitive players can even will Heart Containers to respawn right by them for that quick health fix!

/sarcasm

Please. Don't start a ****-storm of arguments. Time and again, competitive players have given their reasoning as to why items are turned off during tournaments. They've also explained that 99% of the tourney-goers would stomp the living crap out of most casuals, items or not, simply because they've made Smash into a virtual science.

This is Brawl, not Melee. Take your Casual vs. Competitive statements to another thread pertaining to the topic.

At any rate, I'm cool with the update. The "With Anyone" function wasn't intended to be diehard or dynamic; I think that, somewhere on the Dojo, it was mentioned that Sakurai wanted to make the mode accessible to anyone---"anyone" being a malleable term, of course. It does succeed in alienating people like myself that want to have mono-y-mono matches with items off against one other person, but it doesn't completely fail. I know that I like unwinding every so often; perhaps this'll be a good mode to decompress in. Besides, I think it would be better to experiment and **** around with items against live opponents instead of some dummy in Training mode.

I know I'll be using the "With Friends" function more ofter than not, anyway. So, it's beans.

Stop being an ***. Sakurai said himself that 3rd party characters will be unlockable. That demo IS NOT the starting roster

If the demo is the starting roster why:

Is Kirby unlockable but no MetaKnight?
There are less starting characters than there was in Melee iirc
Why is Dedede unlockable when the FIRST event has him
if u reread my post i nevr said that thats gonna b all the startrs i said thr wuld b more. i even clearly statd that kirbys a startr nd mayb kirby wasnt in bcuz they hadnt finishd all his skins. all im sayin is that its weird that they wuld put an "unlockable" in the demo then make u unlock him wen the game comes out...geez

No it's not weird. Heck, it's done more times than you think.

So yeah, Sonic is unlockable.

IRC will be the solution to our problems. Everyone with the intent of playing online will have internet, and hus a computer. An IRC room need to be formed where you can just spam for a battle. Such is seem in many computer based fps EX. 5v5| de_dust 2| Cal-m| west, but instead we shall have.
1v1|semi-pro|"puts in map name here"| west.

IRC? Hm. That doesn't sound like a bad idea, Tutter. This is probably gonna have to be an independent venture, however; I don't think Gideon and the rest of the SWF moderators would have an IRC channel on the forums.

You know, when a DS game has a much better online than a Wii game, it gets you to thinking.
Its sad to note that Jump Ultimate Stars is made for the anime crowd wanting to see their favorite anime characters duke it out, and its also sad to note, that its a blantant copy of Smash Bros with anime characters. The DS has a microphone. The Wii does not.

Quit *****ing about Brawl's online. Get over it. The Wii's online is better than the DS's online anyways.

I actually made a suggestion similar to that when I first joined. I used play CAL I CS and thats how we got scrims, by spamming for them in IRC.

Worked out really well, I wanted to start a channel on gamesurge, but I don't know if I can get a following.

I support this idea, very much. Given the size of our community it can't be TOO hard getting something in IRC set up, at the very least we could create a new board solely for requesting matches, but even then something like a chat or something is quicker and more streamlined. Sign me up.

Thats a pretty ignorant reply.

You are pretty much the person right now that is going into an African American bar in Harlem screaming out "I HATE BLACK PEOPLE!"

If you hate the comp scene so much, why do you post here? This board is almost exclusively about competitive play?

If you hate these people so much, why not just leave?
brawl doesnt even have a competitive scene yet.

we are all here for the same reason.... speculation.

genius for casual players? Does the smash boards community think that casual players are a bunch of *******? Sure we might not take the time to be competitive or go pro. But we still like a good game and the way this online is set up is garbage, casual or competitive.

Even being a casual I'll still mostly stick to friends only, and just try to get a bunch of people from here and other forums to play with.

What bothers me considerably about today's about update is that if this a near-final shot of the character select scene, there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of room for secret characters.

On that same note though, characters not shown and thus probable unlockables are:

Wario, Pokémon Trainer, Snake, Lucas, King DeDeDe, Ice Climbers, Zelda, and Kirby
Not a chance these ppl are all unlcokable...
This Is My Reason

Dont even sayy that isnt real cause it pops up when ever u try to pre-order it on any site...

LOL. This post made me laugh.

Sorry. There isn't a dylan-tgna mode.

But you can all play melee if you don't like it. Your complaints make sakurai laugh.

(see his last update deliberatly making fun of people who don't use items.)

Cross-post for those who are furious about the lack of options:

Notice the item labeled "Team Battle". Today's update dealt exclusively with the item labeled "BASIC Brawl". It appears to be designed for a quick, no-questions-asked, almost-zero-prep-time battle. For those who don't like that option, please keep in mind that there is another option on that screen.

EDIT: To expand on my post above:

Huh? We’re already at character selection? That’s right. You don’t make any rooms.
This implies that "Team Battle" takes you to an interface where you create rooms. Why would you do that if you are playing under the "with anyone" option? The only explanation I can come up with is that someone can choose to create a game and set the options they want. People looking for a game can see a list of open games and get a reading on the match settings for each one. Then they can join a game they like (not being able to see the host's name), and once the game is full, you proceed to the character select screen.

If this is true (which I'd wager it is), then all of this complaining is for nothing.

YES, IRC on gamesurge would be the best way to do this for brawl. Its what computer gamers do for other games, like counter-strike matches (ex: 1v 1 | map name | skill level | location | no items) , day of defeat, team fortress 2, call of duty, 1 v 1 games like quake, and so many others.

call the channel like #ssbb, #ssbbmatches, or something like that :)

People would join and idle the channels. When they want to play a match they look at the advertisements and just PM someone when they want to play.

You can put a limit on the ads like one line every 20 or 30 seconds to keep spam down, etc.

Really, if you look at it:
1) as stated earlier, those who will be playing online also have access to IRC, Smashboards, and other places where they can find the type of game they want.
2) Competitive games with random people online will suck, due to lag from people on slow connections or who live a long ways away, so no loss there.
3)What is wrong with the CPU thing? Even with Melee AI, you would probably go for a bit without realizing that somebody else is a comp, and since Brawl will probably have greatly improved AI, you probably won't notice 90% of the time in a FFA setting, unless everybody else drops or they do at the beginning of the match.

Also, have you seen the number of anti-competitives who are once again, making desparate attempts to restart the war that we have actually managed to put to rest for a few days? I will withhold responses to them specifically, but any chance of a few warnings, mods? The anti-competitive insults are growing really old, and they have a tendency to hijack any thread, regardless of the original premise.

IMG LUL.ONLINE TOURNEY CONFIRMED?

i think this feature is great.

if theres no limit to how many friends we can add,
then i dont see the problem.

having everyone on smashboards registered in your smash friends means you wouldnt NEED a randomly generated fight.

No, that mode appears to just be Basic Brawl but split into 2 vs. 2 is most likely. Why would they force us to play on teams to actually get some options?

Since team battles can be 2v2, 3v1, 2v1v1 or 2v1, I doubt that is fixed. If that's the case, then 1v1v1v1 should technically be possible.

Okay, here's my interpretation of what Sakurai's updates have shown us all in one. (sorry if it's all been said before..)

-Metaknight's green, Yoshi's light blue, and Zelda's dark blue/dark green (I can't tell) alt colours are confirmed.

-Sakurai will be showing more updates that involve secret characters

-Most characters are unlocked during the SSE
[This means that there still will be characters unlocked through other modes]

-A few of the characters that may or may not be the starting roster (but this isn't likely, unless if Sakurai planned the starting roster to be like that of the demo). If the image of the roster he showed us today is truly our roster, then it means three things..
1. Sakurai has already posted secret characters, thus proving he will post up more.
2. The rumour of how there will be 25 characters to start the game and 15 unlockables will be false, and most likely have less characters than 40.
3. Zero-Suit Samus will only be played through the final smash, unless if he changes that.

And I'll leave you with something to think about.
Do you think that when you play multiplayer, you will be able to choose from either
a) Only characters that you've unlocked
b) All the characters in total that have been unlocked by everyone in the match
c) All the unlockable characters without having anyone unlock them
d) Other (post your opinion if not one of the three above)

:]

PROTIP: It's not real.
It's the image that all pre-ordered sites use. If it weren;t real, then they'd have a "No photo available" for it when pre-ordered.

Now that I think about it, the image plus the update confirms that the roster he's given is not the starting one, and that he just took it from the demo. Just like someone else on this thread said, why would kirby be out but metaknight be in?
