How do you guys predict that 24 hour Walmarts will work for Gold Mario?
Midnight release. Call ahead to be certain, but I'd imagine they'd start a line near electronics. Personally, I intend to get to a Walmart by 9, let a manager know why I'm there, find out where they want me to stand, and play my 3DS until they start distributing gold trinkets.

My friend randomly notified me that the Gold Mario amiibos were on pre-order last night and I managed to pre-order one. I kind of wish I had gotten another one for my other friends birthday (and if by some weird chance he already got one I'd just sell it) but I guess I was lucky enough to get one for me.

Decided to buy a Toon Link today cause I figured I should get at least one LoZ figurine and I think the regular Link is kinda meh quality (his face is weird). Also wanted to experiment with a different way of opening the box. Instead of carefully tearing the box and then re-gluing so I could keep the box as a display case and get the amiibo out, I just cut off the plastic off the front of it so I could pull the amiibo out like so.

I can slide the Amiibo in and of the supporting plastic easily so I can both display it and use it rather easily. I can also easily remove the silver sticker underneath him this way I can still use it if I'm feeling particularly lazy and don't want to slide him out.

I'll probably do this with the other "boxed" amiibo I have and anymore amiibo I buy in the future. Just need to get a new x-acto blade. Cutting it was kinda rough at some points.
I use a fruit-cutting knife that is for some reason insanely sharp for a fruit-cutting knife.
Anyway thats pretty cool. You just cut out the barrier petween the amiibo and outside the box? It doesnt seem like theres any beter way to easily put them in and out so probably going to use your idea.

Oh yeah, I regret opening my first few amiibos the way I did as well. Samus and Bowser aren't tremendously rare but I don't want to shell out money for just the packaging. Doubt I'd ever get the chance to find a Pit box though. And space is definitely becoming an issue. I got six boxes lined up on my dresser right now and I think I can fit like 2 more before I have to create another row which I don't wanna do cause they'll block the view of the ones int he back. Maybe I'll get some cheap hooks and try hanging them on my wall if it comes to that.
Here's a pic of someone else doing that, looks pretty nice

Oof, are those Command stick-hooks? I don't trust those. I've used them for picture frames and they tend to fall off and break whatever was hanging when it gets warm and humid.

I've got a solution prepared, but I need access to a saw table to cut the peg board down to size... I ought to just go buy one.

Soooo, is this the place to post about training amiibo or is it pretty much exclusively about the hunt? Is there another post/board I should go to for training tips and tricks?

Do you guys train your amiibo or just keep them for display?

I've only trained a few of mine. Didn't care for it too much. Plus I have a lot so it'd take too long to get them all to 50.

Both. We were just talking about the AI a couple days ago

I'm gonna keep training mine until I get burnt out of it, it only takes an hour or 2 to get them up to 50
Also its cool how there are different way to train them. You could do the completely automatic way and just pu them in a free for all room. You could pit 2 level ones against each other and watch them get smarter. You could just train one yourself and make it a broken monster with a bunch of equips
Personall I want to see wht it looks like for 2 level 1s to fight though I dont know if their stats get changed mid-battle or if they could end up being a weak level 50 if you never exitted the match

I train them to level 50 to learn character matchups and etc. If you ditto them between levels 1 to about 35 and don't give them any buffs, they'll mimic some parts of your play style. I did that with my Sheik Amiibo and now she knows most of the basic Sheik meta and can do solid improvisation. My Luigi Amiibo can do some things that are pro-like. He can hard read up b people, occasionally down b recover, knows the down throw to down b combo, down throw up air, and can hit the spike frame on his down air perfectly. It may take some time for some Amiibos to develop these impressive things, but they pay off A LOT in learning a character matchup. Because of these, I was able to beat the best Mario in NorCal in a Mario ditto and place Top 16 and Top 8 in my first 2 tournaments.

My Kirby amiibo is really good at punishing my missed moves so its definetly kicking me out of the scrubby "throw this out and hope they roll/run/jump/land into it" smash attacks
I dont think it would be as challenging if the stat buffs didnt allow them to kill you in like 5 hits, but its still fun

Also I was talking about how my Kirby amiibo didnt seem like it knew how to use custom moves properly and someone was just like "you have to teach them"
I highly doubt thats how it works though

If you want it to use custom moves, your best bet is to give them those moves at "birth." If you swap out their moves after they've learned to use something else, they'll get confused.

I have a handful that I've trained, but I tend to focus on one for a while, resetting and retraining multiple times if necessary. To date, my Kirby is my most successful, but it still can't hold a candle to the Peach my girlfriend trained - and she's not very good at the game, so how she managed to create that beast in one try is beyond me. Most days, I can't even beat it.

They mostly teach you about reads and the neutral game. And I feel like the level up buffs are used as punishment when you do something wrong. So if you miss space something, you're going to pay a big price for it. It's LOADS of fun going against them and learning stuff against them.

Definitely. I've learned some stuff from my amiibo for sure, and they're really good at improving my grab game (I'm still pretty poop at sm4sh). They've really helped me learn the timing of Falco's bair too. I have 14 at level 50 now. @.@

This. We've had several amiibo come into our tournaments with custom moves and do fantastic, and we've had veteran amiibo show up with "a new custom move" and they don't really grasp how to use it fully. It's a new data point in their data set. I recommend the same thing with equipment that you're going to feed them, as they'll learn to play to the strengths of their equipment.

Congratulations! I'm super excited about Toad too. First non-smash amiibo! So much potential for more if he does well. I would kill for a Star Fox line...

Am I the only one that's not interested about the Golden Mario amiibo? It looks bad and I bet someone can just make a custom one for you.
The silver Mario looks better though.
I don't have all the rares but I managed to snatch a few which I THINK are rare
I managed to find Wii Fit and Marth. Last one of each in the store. A week later I found one Villager and immediately purchased it.
Fast forward Wave 3 I got really lucky. I was visiting the store for a completely different thing and walked out with 3 Amiibos : Toon Link, Ike and Lucario. I didn't know which one was rarer there so I didn't buy Shiek but a couple of weeks later found her in a different store.
As for Megaman and Sonic, E-bay does miracles!
I found a store to get Rosalina/Meta-Knight/Shulk/King DeDeDe from. But I'll have to wait for now.

To me, it's not a big deal to stand in line tomorrow night and hope I get one. If I don't, then that's that. I certainly don't want it bad enough to pay a scalper for one.

I've thought about getting one for a youtube giveaway to promote my tourneys but that's about it. It's definitely not a "make or break" amiibo for me like the rest of them are.

I think I'll pick and choose my way through the smash line, and I will not get doubles. I'll also get must-haves from other waves. Also I got :4megaman:!

I'm going to do this with all the spare Wave 3s I wound up with due to sheer insanity, but I'm waiting in case I need to use them as trade fodder for coming waves. I have a feeling I'll need all the leverage I can get going forward.

I've trained all of mines as soon as I get them except for Luigi, whom I didn't even want to get at all. I plan to give it to my sister so she can give it to her son to play around with it.

Ye Canadians have good news and bad news.

Good news - Gold Mario is releasing in Canada, and isn't a retailer exclusive. He will come out on April 10th:

http://www.geekscape.net/the-gold-mario-amiibo-is-coming-to-canada-on-april-10th

Bad news - Amiibo released on and after April 1st (meaning this includes Gold Mario) will see an increase in MSRP of $2:

http://www.geekscape.net/its-official-amiibo-pricing-in-canada-to-increase-due-to-ailing-dollar
...Seriously? We're already paying more than Americans as is! The Gold Mario amiibo thing is nice to see, but it doesn't concern me too much since I'm only getting one amiibo per character.

Sometimes people forget that Wave 3 was up for pre-order for a long, long time. I don't think you'll have any problems with Wave 4 except for maaaaaybe Ness. I think part of the reason pre-orders are taking so long is nintendo is still adjusting quantities to deal with North American demand.

I took the earlier idea another step and just removed the back parts too (the back part looks nice but it makes taking them out more annoying, and it still looks good without the bak part/only the stand part)

You can see some rough cuts from the plastic on the sides, I'll probably fix that later if it really bugs me. But with only the bottom part of the "stand" you can slide them in and out of the package without havining to remove the plastic at all. And you still have the benefit of the nice packaging and nice background
Also I got JP Sonic, yeah, the Japanese text doesnt bother me very much since amiibo, SONIC, and Nintendo's logo are all still in english

I know I'm not gonna be anywhere NEAR a Wal-mart tomorrow. Holy crud. And you thought Black Friday was bad. This is literally gonna be like when they get in a batch of $98 TVs. Yikes.

Also, since my Toon Link from eBay is arriving Friday anyway, I'm good.

Spent two hours today checking out Walmarts.
I hate wasted amiibo time.
Multiple had already put out their Gold Mario Amiibo and lost them at some point in the past TWO WEEKS.

It's such a matter of luck with the following incalculable factors, the Walmart factors:
-24 hour stores make "when it is available" a very rough choice. Yes, in theory we can request for it at midnight... if we have a helpful employee at a store then, willing to try to locate a box anywhere.
-notorious poor customer service, particularly at night. *not all, of course
-Stores breaking street order, dramatically.
-so many stores as options, what if "I choose one that got none"
-Walmarts are sketchy to 'wait at'

Weird since I heard at Target and WalMart the cashiers were digitally locked not to sell Smash 4 before the street date. I guess it's a thing they manually input for specific items.

Its mostly collectors fodder. Maybe it has a gold mario skin in MP10 I dont know. If you really wanted a gold one you could buy an extra regular mario and just spray paint it I guess :p
It wouldn't look the same.
I know people keep posing this, though most people who collect it want it to collect it, not to look at a poorly reproduced reprint of another figure.

Kinda wished they would release more Meta Knights so I can sneak behind everyone and get one while they're all focused on Golden Mario.
Yes, my local Best Buy is right next door to the Walmart.

So I'm finally canceling my order from nin-nin games.

It's been two months since I ordered both amiibos, and while they only came out recently, due to the mysterious circumstances of the Rosalina amiibo I ordered, (like if I would ever get it anyway and them not giving my answers I like), I decided to talk to them about canceling the entire order. I have just now sent them an email.

I think I get my money back, so if that is the case, I have at least enough money to buy Rosalina from a scapular. I'm going to have to give up on Shulk now.

Whew...
So Amazon emailed me saying my payment for my Toad amiibo was declined. Luckily I was able to get another source of payment, so now it's arriving Tuesday. That was close x:
