Hello. I'm talking about games, any games...

The thing is, my mom thinks I'm addicted to video games. Well, she's 54(I think lol) and I'm 13.5. My usual routine is 1-3 hours a day, with ofc daily Animal Crossing, Daily brawling just not 2 forget how 2 kick arse and rest of games I'm curerently playing. Ofc, I play more on weekends and the days when I'm sick or there's no school, I play all day, but THTZ SPECIAL CONDITIONS >:0.

One more thing. I played a lot more games when I was smaller, but than I had good grades(ofc tht was 2nd and 3rd grade) but now I have bad grades and she thinks tht video games r blocking me from studying, bcz she thinks im smart...PLZ PROVE HER WRONG, games r not blocking me from studying, my lazyness is blocking me from studying...

Oh, I know how it is 2 be addicted, I used 2 play like 8 fking hours of Myth War(a free mmorpg game by IGG) , so Im pretty sure that im not addicted.

PLZ PROVE THAT SHE'S WRONG!

I can't really PROVE you're not addicted, but as far as my experience goes, I play more than that and my life isn't falling apart, so...yeah. Then again, people think I'm addicted to video games, too. It's annoying how people think that having a hobby that you're very passionate about and do as much as possible makes you addicted.

Even better, you KNOW that if I were playing soccer or basketball as much as possible no one would call me addicted to that, or have a problem with it.

Sucky society is sucky.

No.

I played World of Warcraft for 2 years, I should know an addiction.
You're fine, if you want her to stop being so concerned, stop being lazy, imo.

Well, I'm going have to be the "uncool" person and tell you to tone it down. Bottom line is that this is your mother and she could probably care less about what we think. I have stopped playing video games on weekdays, and that helped me to focus. If your grades don't improve she, if she's like my mom, would take the game by force. Every time she sees a bad grade, the blame will immediately go to the games. I personally know how addicting Animal Crossing is. I do advise playing less. I don't plan on playing WOW. Not because my computer is horridly slow, but I know THAT would be an addiction. In short, no you are not addicted, but please play less, and your mother should admire your self-discipline. And on weekends.... go crazy.

I experienced pretty hardcore addiction to Ultima Online and Diablo 2 where I played 24 hours straight and completely forgot to eat.

Basically, to prove you aren't addicted, don't play games for a day or two. If you can do that, you aren't addicted. Games are a waste of time anyway, they are meant for leisure, not to consume all your waking time.

You know whats addicting?

Playing Maplestory for 24 hours straight while gaining 30 levels.

So no you arn't
This.

And addiction is when you can derive no pleasure from anything else except for the thing you're addicted to. Try eating a favorite food and see if you still like it.

why dont you just man up, do your homework first, and then play video games after...achieving in life should be much more satisfying than in fake stuf...

I agree that he needs to get his work done, but I don't like the way you put that. While achieving in life should be satisfying, I wouldn't call video games "fake stuf" (well, I definitely wouldn't call them "stuf"). They are games, but they're not fake. And in some cases, I can definitely see how you'd rather achieve a world record in speed running than get an A in a math class when you know you're never going to need anything you learned in life.

But yeah, to add onto what I said before, while I don't think you're addicted, I would definitely advise you to do your work. For the first 17 or so years of your life, it'll be good fun to be screwing around. Then you'll get into a subpar college and end up with a job that you hate and that barely pays. Not to be the pessimist here, but don't let that happen; you'll highly regret it.

True, this is what the internet is for, Video Games or to kill the time between Internet sessions.

Ask me how long I've been playing Little Big Planet and I'll tell you what an addiction is.

Firus couldn't have put it any better when he said nobody would judge him for playing Basketball or some sport in any free time he had, but if he did the same with Video Games it became bad and they needed to be Clinton Banned.

Video Games may not have the same positive effect as playing sports, but that's in the responsibility of the person playing. Be responsible, keep your grades up, enjoy your games. And remember, there are dangers in both. (Sports and Video Games, not responsibility..)

I'm almost 19 and I play video games for 7+ hours a day, I am addicted. 2+ hours is nothing compared to me but it's still enough to say that you're addicted. Though that's fine, if you can keep up being in shape, eating healthy, and your school work, you should have the right to do whatever you want as long as you want as long as it doesn't hurt anyone else (except football, then you smash those ****ers into the ground).

Yeah I'm 20 years old, and 2+ would be nothing to me. I mean, I have stopped playing so much over the past couple of years so I could focus more on school work, but during the summers, I could do 15 hours a day if I wanted to, or at least 5-7 hours a day.

Depends on the summer I guess...

If you mean he played for 600 hours straight doing nothing else, then no. That would mean he survived for 25 days without eating or drinking, which is impossible. You'd be dead in a week, max.

If he ate and drank, I don't know how you'd die from that.

Exactly. There's nothing wrong with playing video games as long as you don't let the rest of your life suffer. Although I would go as far to say that video games are beneficial. Hand-eye coordination aside, there are other benefits as well. It decreases your reaction time, improves your peripheral vision (because in a lot of games you're forced to have it), and some games, especially Zelda, Metroid, and the like, make you think.

Heh, I laughed at the last part. You know there are dangers in responsibility, like being successful. God forbid something like that happens, I wouldn't wish that upon anyone. [/joke]

It was a man in China that died after playing World of Warcraft for 72 hours straight in a computer cafe. I believe he didn't eat at all; however, sitting still for that long would have killed him as his legs would and lower torso would have developed blood clots, which once he moved, would have headed to his heart and gave him a pulmonary embolism.

I knew staying still for long periods of time had fatal side effects I just never knew all the details and terms like this.

Prime example of the fact that you need to have discipline and responsibility about your game playing habits.

Not to mention how much politics warps the minds of the ignorant making them believe that Video Games translate to violence in real life. Video Games have only been around for so long, do you think wars throughout history were caused because the parties invloved were playing Manhunt and GTA and got the urge to go start a war?

Do you think Hitler was playing a violent video game when he decided to start World War II and the Holocaust? I doubt it.

Maybe if your child is not quite right in the head he will translate the violence in video games to his life but then you need to seek a professional to help you, not try and get a ban on all video games not based on Nickelodeon or Disney shows.

I'm opposed to ESRB ratings.

1-3 hours a day isn't addiction. games is probably not the reason your grades droped UNLESS you KNOW you can pass if you cut down gaming. your probably just at a lazy phase.

Get your grades up. That's a very important thing to do. Doing well in school will make you feel good. I've never had failing grades but whenever my grades weren't up to my potential I'd feel a bit left of center for some reason like something wasn't right.

Often times when I'm on top of my shoolwork I often find myself having more sparetime than if I wait till the last minute to do the work for some reason.

I can't say for sure if your gaming is an addiction or whether or not it's causing your grades to go down but try to get back into your schoolwork. Making a little bit of progress will make others around you happy, especially your mom.

Addiction is a really strong word, and one that's tossed around far too easily. You should really sit with your mom and explain that it's far better for you to be using your free time on an innocent hobby such as gaming instead of roaming the streets in a gang or experimenting with mind-altering drugs. There are worse things that you could be doing with your spare time, odds are there will be no lasting side effects or chances of death from your playing video games.

Just keep your grades up. :D

I totally agree with you. I have friendz that are on the street palying football or basketball all the time and no1 thinks they are addicted, while I play 1-3 hours and everyone thinks tht im addicted.

What really putes me in a bummer is that soem people here, who r hardcore gamers think im addicted. Im really not, I just gotta focus a bit more :(

I guess it all comes down to how you justify "addiction". I suppose it's a pretty reasonable perspective to take that if doing an activity causes something as important as your grades to go down, maybe you shouldn't do that activity as much--be it video games or playing stickball (or whatever you kids are doing nowadays).

I actually past this test several times. In fact, I went around a whole month without video games (I wasn't as avid an Internet surfer as I am now)

Then again, that was BEFORE Brawl came out.

But video games is like a better version of crack. XD

Yea but won't kill you...I think  :) :urg: :(

Thing is you gotta act responsible about it. Of course parents won't think playing Bball or any sports are irresponsible, but my school does. If you're doing bad at school then you get kicked out of what ever team your in. Hell i got banned in Gr.9 from going on the comp becuase my grades were horrible. Thank fully i learned and have self control, but my mom never thinks i do.
