Took the easy route with this one, and made an alt based off Meta Ridley. Was much easier to do than Mario. Just separated the wings, mouth, eyes, and claws. Mostly just played with monotone and contrast tools. I originally had the claws the same shade of grey, to match the claws on Meta Ridley, but it looked a bit too bland. Fortunately, closer examination of Meta Ridley shows some red claws on top of the wings and tip of the tail. So, out of curiosity, applied it to all the claws and felt it looked a bit better. Also made they eye a bit more yellow to match.

Does anyone know how to do this on gimp?

I usually use the free select tool to select all the spots of the render I want to recolor, then I use the colorize tool.

I would just recommend putting the effort to get Photoshop CS2. Its free, and its way better than gimp in almost every way. Gimp is just better for gifs.

Great submissions everyone! I use both Gimp and Photoshops CS but whichever works best for you. We already have plenty of submissions so, unlike Round 1, I will be ending this round sooner than April 11th. We can go through the weekend and end on the 9th I think.

GIMP doesn't even have non-destructive editing, I can't fathom how anyone can stand it. Adjustment layers are the greatest thing to happen to image editing since the hue slider was invented.

Round 3: New Single Color Palette Swap for Ryu​

Here is our first 3rd party round! Smash 4 had tons of great 3rd party characters ranging from our favorite Blie Bomber to our-of-the-blie cool boy Cloud. Ryu was one of those pleasant surprises that really demonstrated how a fighter-based character would play in Smash. His palettes featured various color swaps found in Street Fighter II but there are tons of possibilities for Ryu from the entire Street Fighter catalog.

Origin​

This skin originates from many Street Fighter games, and represents Ryu if he were to give in to the Satsui no Hado, an evil energy that flows through him. However, this particular render takes heavy inspiration from Evil Ryu's apperance in Street Fighter IV.

Just thought I’d make a post here detailing the judging process that we go through, just to offer a bit of transparency.


First, the three judges (me, Venus of the Desert Bloom , and @splat) all pick our top three favorite submissions. Each skin mentioned on the lists becomes a final contender.

(Note: For the first two rounds, the amount of final contenders happened to be 4, but could in theory go as high as 9 if we all have a totally different list of favorites).

Each of the final contenders is rated by each judge in four categories, in this judging process:

We do this for each of the final contenders, and then the winner is the skin with the highest Final Score out of 60.

Oh yeah, and the honorable mentions are just the final contenders. So if your submission was an honorable mention, know that it was in at least one judge’s top three.

I don’t see why adding something additional to the swap would necessarily be against the rules. As long as it’s not too much of a change.

I personally think it would be fine as long as it’s on the level of Pokémon having hats, in terms of how much of a change it is.

The icicles on the frozen Ridley would be an example of what I personally would think is ok.

Great color swaps! Mario and Ridley were rather easy hence why I thought Ryu would be a more challenging. especially since the color swaps would focus less on Ryu and more so on other SF characters.
