Melee something, Brawl something else, etc...

OHBTW, that anime thingie convention thingie down here in T-town this weekend actually went okay. There were no major screw ups... for the most part... and it looks like there might be another one next year. I didn't play in the brawl tourney, but I hear it went smooth (even though the admin decided to do single elim instead of double).

And I also have a present for the thread as soon as I find some uploaded pictures...

Paper, Scissors, Stone

by Tom Wayman

An executive's salary for working with paper
beats the wage in a metal shop operating shears
which beats what a gardener earns arranging stone.

But the pay for a surgeon's use of scissors
is larger than that of a heavy equipment driver removing stone
which in turn beats a secretary's cheque for handling paper.

And, a geologist's hours with stone
nets more than a teacher's with paper
and definitely beats someone's time in a garment factory with scissors.

In addition: to manufacture paper
you need stone to extract metal to fabricate scissors
to cut the product to size.
To make scissors you must have paper to write out the specs
and a whetstone to sharpen the new edges.
Creating gravel, you require the scissor-blades of the crusher
and lots of order forms and invoices at the office.

Thus I believe there is a connection
between things
and not at all like the hierarchy of winners
of a child's game.

When a man starts insisting
he should be paid more than me
because he's more important to the task at hand,
I keep seeing how the whole process collapses
if almost any one of us is missing.
When a woman claims she deserves more money
because she went to school longer,
I remember the taxes I paid to support her education.
Should she benefit twice?
Then there's the guy who demands extra
because he has so much seniority
and understands his work so well
he has ceased to care, does as little as possible,
or refuses to master the latest techniques
the new-hires are required to know.
Even if he's helpful and somehow still curious
after his many years—

Without a machine to precisely measure
how much sweat we each provide
or a contraption hooked up to electrodes in the brain
to record the amount we think,
my getting less than him
and more than her
makes no sense to me.
Surely whatever we do at the job
for our eight hours—as long as it contributes—
has to be worth the same.

And if anyone mentions
this is a nice idea but isn't possible,
consider what we have now:
everybody dissatisfied, continually grumbling and disputing.
No, I'm afraid it's the wage system that doesn't function
except it goes on
and will
until we set to work to stop it

with paper, with scissors, and with stone.

I don't really get the bolded part but I like the overall message of the piece.

Genesis

Note: This is a re-post.

Okay, Alabama Thread and other potential nearby people, we're serious about attending Genesis. It's a Melee and Brawl tournament in Antioch, California, which is a good 2,300 miles from Alabama. The dates for the tournament are July 10-12, and it takes around 2 days to drive there and back. We'd be gone from July 8-14. Start planning. This tournament will be huge, and all of you will want to come. So far, people I know that are definitely interested in going are the following:

George
Nu
Moogle
Reflex
Elev8
Will_
theONEjanitor
Dingle
Poet
ShaSLAM
Kismet2
Cheap (provided he can escape his parents' influence)
Saintrage
ZOM~B

We'd be renting either a 12 or 15 passenger van. Splitting the cost, the rental and gas wouldn't be very much, and the same goes for hotel rooms.

Also note that there will be regional crews. I think everyone can get behind that.

Why do people expect a game made by a company catering to non-competitive, fun-oriented gamers/children to be balanced? Even melee was somewhat unbalanced.

I hear the background info on that tourney being that people didn't really take it seriously, it was a biweekly, and they all wanted to play brawl+.

That's what was, like, in the tournament thread or something.

Haha, boss totally dropped mario. Mario's that bad.

and Nu, I think I get my computer back tomorrow or the next day, so can play css or something later.

a better question is why do people equate the simple-mindedness of a bunch of scrubs to a game being bad

what if the game still IS bad, regardless of the mentality of the players?
1 on 1 government, for example.

i dont know anything about that game, it has an awesome name though
brawl's not bad though. its almost certainly and solely a mentality issue.

Heck yeah! Things seem to be getting interesting here again. I'm getting the itch to start training again so you shall be seeing me at more tournaments starting now. So Kalm/Slam whenever either of you are heading to a tournament or having a smashfest contact me cause I need help retraining myself cause it's been a while. And my team needs doubles practice really badly!

I've (sadly enough) never been to a Melee tourney. I got into Melee competitively when Brawl was being delayed, and delayed, and delayed; I thought I was better in Melee than Brawl, but after playing with some people at Moogle's once or twice, I realized that it wasn't true ;]

anyone wanting to attend this way >_> I would beg them to reconsider...

1 day 12 hour drive!? Not counting stops and sleeping in between driving....my god. Take a plane, use the extra time you saved to make the money back. >_>

This would assume that the van leaves from GA, which I think I heard IHSB telling me it was...

Okay I'm reinstating my use of Samus in Brawl so Moogle if you would kindly add her to my characters. I just can't stay away cause she is so fun, even though I might not ever use her in anything besides friendlies and low tier tournaments if we have another. This will be my last character change for a while cause I'm gonna focus on them now.
