Anyone else seen this? (or read it, but I think the anime is better)

For those of you that haven't seen it, Akagi is all about the deep game of mahjong. This may turn many of you off from watching this, but believe me, first appearances can be very deceiving.

Akagi is the story that begins with a young 13-year-old boy, who looks like an adult, by the name of Akagi Shigeru (hence the name :p). After coming close to death from a game of 'chicken', he goes into a Yakuza (japanese mafia) mahjong parlor where he meets a man by the name of Nangou, who is in the game to stay alive and cancel his debts. Nangou lets Akagi play, and once that night was over it was evident that a Legend had been born. Akagi was truly considered a genius with his incredible insight, wit, disregard for life, composure and power.

I regard Akagi Shigeru as one of the coolest characters ever :)

This anime is 26 episodes long, and if you haven't seen it, I highly recommend it.

For those of you who HAVE seen this... I'll kick off some discussion. Which was your favourite Mahjong match in the series?

Sounds good

The depth of the anime is really significant I find, and you get to really like the main character :)

Can't wait to hear your thoughts

Not sure whether I should be surprised by the lack of comments or not. A lot of folks aren't familiar with this anime or even Kaiji for that matter.

Still, as someone who watched all 26 episodes, I can say that this (as well as Kaiji) is one of the better anime out there, hands down--this is absolutely how shounen anime needs to be done. Absolutely.

The atmosphere, the characters, the aesthetics, everything is near perfect. And I must say, Akagi is indeed badass, easily one of my favorite anime characters.

If you haven't watched it, and are looking for a good anime--by good, I mean "leagues above Naruto, Bleach, etc." good--do yourself a favor and check this one out. Also check out Kaiji.

Akagi was pretty good even tho I didn't know a whole lot about mahjong even then tho it was pretty entertaining as the show is really about the atmosphere and Akagis MIND GAMES then the game itself. I will probably try to learn more about mahjong and re watch the show. Kaiji is also kick ***, my favorite of the two.
