You guys should all make concepts for your own persona and then we'll have a vote within the group of which characters will be drafted. People who don't have their character accepted can work on art for the style-personas (if we go with that), right?

I like that idea. As far as voting, I could even make a poll. So even people not involved with the project can offer their input on which characters look great and which look not so great.

You should allow people to see who voted what though, as we obviously won't take Inuui's(namesearch) opinion as heavy as for example Lokii.

I actually prefer doing a list kinda thing, let's say X characters are brought forth, people make a topX list and we draft the Y characters we need. That way, people can't vote their own design without it being checked.

Lol. Yeah, it definitely needs to be shown who voted on what if we do a poll. The top list idea is good as well, not sure how we stop people from voting in their own (I kind of doubt anyone here would do that though).

But I don't think we should necessarily weigh opinions like that, some better than others. We have to think about the audience. Without them our end product wouldn't even be consumed or appreciated by anyone, so I feel like the opinion of the 'common person' if you will is nearly as important as ours in the game's creation.

In my opinion we should select characters first, discuss their design and minor tweaks possiblyprobably and then poll them with the public.

With the character design we should include a basic background story and what sort of powers/moveset they have. Unless that's implied already lol. We should have a topX list if there's a lot of designs, if there's like 10 or less it shouldn't be necessary.

First we need to decide on the overall gameplay, can we like, poll for this?

Then we need to decide our roster size and who will design a character.

Poll for gameplay? "Gameplay" is kind of a broad term, it'd be kind of hard to narrow down poll options for it.

The gameplay setup we have now is

2D 1 vs. 1 fighting game
Characters with fixed movesets, but varying selectable specials (art styles)

If anyone opposes those they should let us know and why, I just assumed everyone was fine with it lol. Once we have a broad scope we can discuss finer mechanics like attack functions, movement mechanics, etc.

In the meantime, I think everyone who wants to pitch a character concept should do so, it doesn't even have to super polished yet. Just make some drawings and post them here. Better to have too many than too few. We can work on gameplay and character design simultaneously.

Once we set a tentative cutoff date, all characters submitted will be posted in the OP of a new thread. Then people can make their lists of who they want in and why, or we have a poll, or whatever.

So yeah. I say we start making some characters this weekend. Personally I say the final roster should be like... 6 tops since we have a pretty small group here.

Need... more... freetime...

Are we still discussing the extent these specials are going to have on the characters? Is it going to be just a variety of special attack modifications, an upgraded form, or full on tag team?
Whenever I see tag team I can't help but think of MvC assists. If they're not like that then they might as well become 'full power' upgrade specials, like Bang's thingymajig.
Only prettier :D

Idea off the top of my head

Name: Antares
Age: 22
Style: Pottery (thought it'd be fitting since Antares means "holder of mars"... or to hold the reddish brown clay)
Description: He may have a clay sword of some swort. Possibly can throw pots or protect himself with a clay shield...
Complexion/Outfit: Clay suit of armor?

Thoughts?

Let's see some sketches, yo. :D You can do anything you want with the character, bring 'em to life. A Ceramics character sounds like a must have to me.

So you'd rather the Motif be like a one time use sort of thing.

Yeah, I mean I'm sort of leaning away from the tag team idea. I'd rather the art style wasn't another sentient being, but something that affects how the person's specials behave.

Here's how I envisioned it. Every character has 2 special attacks and one like super special. Let's say you choose Lokii, and all of her specials are spreadshot projectiles. Then you attach a Cubism motif. So when she uses her super special a storm of flat blocks comes out.

Now let's say, same scenario but you chose a Cartoon motif. Now her super special is still a spreading projectile, but it's now a wave of thick black lines and prismatic colors, and it has a wider vertical range but does less damage.

I dunno, I just like the idea of having somewhat basic specials for everyone, and then they have specific properties based on the motif. Maybe Cartoon generally decreases damage output but increases range or something like that.

Awesome idea Kurt. I like the idea of a sort of clay warrior :0

And that's pretty much exactly what I had in mind Neon. Plus that other thing I previously mentioned.
Pluss like maybeeeeeeeeee maybe maybe maybe
like
imagine you could like use up the power in one burst that would temporarily upgrade you into broken tier, and it could be activated at any time, at the cost of losing the special effects of your specials afterwards.
That way you could have a neat balance of super super rushdown and a careful conservative play. Obviously unleashing it asap would be unsafe, and the whole point would serve as a really high risk high reward punishment system.
oh man so many ideas right now blllaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaagh

Giving one a power burst might make it so that you can hitconfirm into burst into really really broken combo that lasts till the effects are over.
aka no risk **** reward

Yeah true, then all the other person has to do is counter with their own burst.
Unless it was determined by meter.
hmmm

lmao
Just throwing out ideas.

It's possible that it could work if the burst didn't create a wtf broken, and in return the loss of the specific effects in specials would be a smaller handicap. I'm sure there's a happy medium in there somewhere, I'm too lazy to find it though.

this is probably the coolest thread ive ever seen.

ive brainstormed fighting game mechanics for maybe the entire latter half of my life and recently have started trying to draw/animate characters performing attack animations. i havent been on the boards in a while, so coming on to find this....seeing this thread is like a dream. i hope you guys have fun and successfully FINISH this project, instead of stopping the fun halfway thru like other past ae projects.

if i can dig up old fighting engine summary files i made + relevant stuff (animations, references), ill try to organize it and post. no promises tho... (theyre prolly *** anyway)

if stuff gets too tough, you can always take what you have and make a rly cool video with the animations you create.

So you want characters of who?

I would do me, but I feel since all I'm doing is drawing myself as I see myself plus some description, I don't think it's enough to be part of the project.

Zio... In a way my clay character Antares is "me."

I mean you'd never recognize that he was "me" due to his abilties, style, and what-not... but I took elements of my personality and strengths and converted them into a metaphorical example for what I think I'd be like in a video game!

By the way with the specials idea, are we having generic 6 specials that will always do the same thing for each character? Or are we having like a...

Speed Special (weaker but quick to come out special attack)
Strenth Special (slower but much stronger special attack)
Ranged Special (slower but long ranged special attack)

etc etc

A bit early to be thinking about this, but one of my friend's fathers can do the really deep movie voice...

Announcer maybe? HEHEHEHE

By the way... as for stats are we going to have some sorta stat system?

Like...

Defense, Offense, Hitpoints, Energy, Speed, Range... blah blah

I mean, I have a design I made off a dream four years ago. Hell, there's an okay background story to that, too. Plus abilities and attacks can be derived from it. I been set before I began.

All I need is to draw a new one. I just feel silly doing that and having the rest be done for me. By "the Rest" I mean animation, implementation into game design, etc.

My idea so far...

Name: Antares (means “hold/against mars” which can be taken as “hold the red earth” or “harbinger of war” Also refers to the super giant star, Antares, which is loacated in the constellation Scorpio)

Age: 22

Skills: Skilled in creating ceramics. His affinity for the earth and his skill and ability to breathe fire allows him to build ceramic items almost instantly.

General Look: Suit of Medieval looking armor made out of Ceramics.

Entrance: Normal looking man in a suit punching the ground creating a sand cloud which dissipates leaving a Clay warrior who then pulls a sword and shield from his back.

Weapons: Ceramic Long Sword in right hand, Ceramic Circular Shield in left hand, Explosive Pottery

Fighting Style: Fighting style is based on Medieval European warfare. Specials based on Ceramic arts and the star/constellation flavor of the character. Relatively quick attacks but slow independent movement. Melee attacks are swift with medium range. Free movement is slower.

Moves:

Venom Star: Antares lunges forward or diagonally upward and pierces the opponent with the tip of the sword. Slowest normal melee attack though has longest range, heaviest damage, and most priority. Long startup with little cool down.
Named for being part of constellation Scorpio.

Gemini Slash: Two Medium ranged swipes with the sword meant to cut the opponent twice. Medium fast move with medium range, medium damage, and medium priority. Medium startup with little cool-down. Named after it's status as a twin star with Antares-B.

Trifecta Rush: A quick and graceful left shoulder and shield bash into the opponent, followed quickly by a spinning back kick with the right leg striking, and a finisher sword swipe. Fast move with short range, medium damage, and low priority. Fast startup with fast cooldown. Named for its 3 hit nature.

Discus Throw: Antares spins around and throws his shield like a discus at the opponent. Has long range, heavy damage, and high priority. Damages on block (though damage is limited) and can be dodged. Quick startup with a long cool down, and the shield will be missing until picked up after the attack. Without the shield Antares takes more damage on block, and is incapable of performing the Discus throw. Damage from Trifecta rush is also decreased since Antares would use his bare shoulder.

Solar Flare: Antares breaths out a stationary fireball for a Medium/Long range in front of him. Has medium-long range, heavy damage, and high priority against melee attacks. Damages on block. Long startup with a short cool down. Used as a counter for easily predictable attack

I have a friend who does Radio. He does a great announcer voice, and the best impression of NBA Jam's announcer who goes BOOM SHAKALAKA
Stats? I like stats I guess, but I don't know if it's necessary. It's always fun though.

Basic 5 minute sketch and some ideas jotted down.
I have some more concepts...I was having a lot of fun with this~
It started out as a persona character...but turned into a new OC xD

I have yet to work out concrete movelists...but most will have something to do with inks and Norse myths
Kurt was helping me to think of weapon choices xD Thanks Kurt!

I'm getting a lot of mythological vibe from the characters mentioned so far, with Antares being a delicious blend of Egyptian, Persian and Greek and Lokii's character based on Norse tales. Maybe we should continue with this motif? Loki is a Norse god after all.

A few comments:

@TigerWolf: I think medieval is a little too recent and out of context for a character called Antares.

@Lokii: Love the design :D

Also...

I can host some forum software on my server, to make discussion easier and more distributed, if you guys would like it.

@Zero there's already a large amount of variety between the art of different time periods/civilizations, so I imagine it would be an easy implementation. It seems to be drifting naturally towards that anyways lol xD

This Antares guy sounds kinda broke and I may or may not have found my future main.

I like Lokii's design as well, reminds me of ABA for some reason lol. Hope more people have sketches pretty soon here, TigerWoods or myself can start adding things to the OP.

As far as stats, instead of Defense, maybe just give everyone a health bar that represents a number, and all attacks do varying numbers of damage? I know that's cliche in the fighting genre, but I dunno. I have a hard time thinking of a better system that's not just overly complicated. Actually I thought of another one a while back, but it's kind of... dumb so it's probably not necessary lol.

Then again we could factor in Defense and things to characters, I mean... Pokemon does it. I guess I just don't see what advantage that has over, say, giving someone a larger health bar.

I don't want to steal all the character creation slots... but let me know if this is a good character. (If someone wants to steal it go ahead and make it your own.. if it should be trashed then fine :p)

Name: Dillusia (pronounced Dih-Lou-Sha)
Age: Unknown... possibly ancient
Fighting Style: Cubism... Almost Alien-like
Design: Futureristic looking... this sculpture is sorta what I'm going for

She might fight bare handed but she can use cube projectile attacks... imprison the oponnent...

Sorta like a terminator cubism woman... Whatcha think?

I like the imprisonment idea, would be ideal for a grab
I was also thinking like an arakune type flexibility, it would look like those CG movie bloopers where everything is like ASZZXMOAJXNCPACMN
