If I see another comment that has "it's too slow" written all over it...

Like come on. Being slow doesn't mean bad. You can deny ledges with this thing, use it as a mine on stage that the opponent has to jump over to approach you, run in front of it. (Honestly, why are you running behind it? Running in front of it makes it harder for the opponent to punish your approach option.)

There are a lot of things you can do with this thing. Use its "slowness" to your advantage.

Keep in mind you can speed it up if you throw it at a certain point when the hydrant water pushes you too.

Nah, it's biggest disadvantage and the reason I don't use it as much as I do other fruits is that it is really easy for an opponent to grab.

Which is why I always bounce it off the ledge of the stage to recatch it.

That's what I do too actually. Still, that requires set up time, so I usually set this up when the opponent has died.

It's a good fruit, but situational since we get the most out of it when we have it in hand.

Still... Melon is a large part of why I like slanted stages.

Why specifically state the melon as a situational fruit? All of the fruit are situational.

Key is less situational than the other fruit I've used. Fast, Hard hitting, and long ranged.

You are right, but melon is even moreso because of the fact that it is not super useful until you pick it up, and is very easy to take away from you (Until you have picked it up).

Now most fruits are better in hand, but melon's only real utilities are when you have it in hand, whereas other fruits can be useful when launched from charge.

Now that said melon is one of the best fruits to have in hand IMO. The shieldstun, Uthrow properties, knockback and sheer damage make it amazing.

Yeah but the key is up there in terms of most predictable. And with defensive people and people with reflectors it makes it a little trickier. Still useful of course. Key is life.

That's why you use key to punish. Doesn't matter if they see it coming if they're locked in end lag.

The thing is Japan's meta is different. This was really apparent during the melee era (for example, when Ken got destroyed by Japanese players because they knew how to DI, and he didn't), and is a little less relevant today (because Internet and stuff), but you can still see the difference. One thing that comes to mind is they are going crazy for Villager and Wario in Japan, while people barely use them in the West. So I'm not too surprised that the top Japanese Pac player doesn't exactly play him like we do.

I believe @ fromundaman fromundaman has a really good point:

Melon is much more useful when it (kinda) becomes an item, and it's one of the inferior fruits when you simply throw it normally. I think that's what Abadango meant; still I'm not too sure why he would completely disregard the Melon because there are some uses nonetheles.

Personally, I'm in the middle. I believe it's a good fruit, but I also believe it is somewhat overhyped.

Melon is a pretty good approach against certain matchups.

Melon is great for closing the distance, but you gotta have a plan ready for when the opponent catches it. Against zoney-characters (Custom Tripping Tree Villager for example), the threat of a catch is too great IMO.

Against like Marth, who suddenly can't do SH Fair or Bairs anymore? Yeah, keep chucking that Melon at him. Marth needs to let go of it to return to the strategy. Same with Gannondorfs (`dorf's aerials man... don't mess with them)

In general, some matchups force me to go key-or-bust (with maybe cherry, strawberry, orange, and apple to mix things up).

I just played against a very skilled Pac-Man today on For Glory, and he beat me in 10/11 games. He would use Melon, upthrow it by the edge of the stage, and drop a hydrant. This makes me think that it's phenomenal in terms of edguarding and combo-potential/hype building, as essentially Pac-Man's "Spirit Bomb" that forces other players to be cautious when approaching. By having that levitating melon in front of a well placed fire hydrant near the edge, (along with a Pac-Man who's free to do whatever, probably make a trampoline under the melon should you try to come on stage) it makes it almost impossible to get back on the stage without getting clobbered by something or being pushed away by the hydrant. As a Mario main who has a lot of possibilities, I was surprised by how good this Pac-Man was at setting up these "traps" on me. I thought that with cape all would fare well...But I was horribly wrong. Melon is a force to be reckoned with, and it also adds variety to the items you choose to throw. Throwing all of one item (keys) is very predictable. They're all different and all good for different reasons.
But that's just my thoughts from someone who isn't a Pac main, but definitely knows his potential.

The melon has the best frame traps out of all of his items. Throw a melon off stage, the opponent air dodges you then drop down and nair or you can throw down a hydrant or do a uturn side b for a possible stock kill.

Here's a ten second video I made to show how the melon can frame trap opponents if they decide to recover high. The Melon is so godlike! It's so good. I hope Abadango uses the melon in the future. It creates so many situations.

The melon is the best Bonus Fruit we have against Mega Man (and surely against other projectile based characters too). It absorbs his small pellets and also destroys his crash bomber and metal saw. It's more of a defensive tool than offensive. Yes, it's slow and should be stronger and deal more shield damage, but it does have unique properties no other Bonus Fruit has. Too bad it's easy for opponents to grab, so you can't really spam it.

.....

The melon is one of the best fruits. Ok it is slow , but it is one of our most versatile fruit.

The melon allows to launch the hydrant with fair as fast as possible.
You can DICTIC uthrow the melon to bthrow.
You can cover the ledge with a really nice ledge traps.

Do you remember the nick? I have been playing in for glory a lot and I really love using the melon
