What is a Gauss Rifle? To answer this simply, it is a gun using magnets to fire a projectile. Now a video game or a movie may have misled you on exactly how this works. You see, there are actually TWO different ways of firing a bullet using a magnet. The first is known as a rail or coil gun. This is where you take very large coils of copper wire and make an electronic magnet surrounding a barrel. When the trigger is pulled there is a wave effect that pulls the bullet down the chamber. When the projectile passes the first coils pulling it forward that coil turns off and the one directly in front turns on. This causes the projectile to continue to increase in velocity.
The Navy made a very big one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UBTbhSFfuNM
I can't remember where but I think I read that the projectile in that video was going mach 7.

Anyways, this guy explains a Gauss Rifle (and saves you some reading time): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z7CyPtF0ChA

So there, that is what a Gaussian Gun is. Now I plan on taking it further and making the coolest most useless rifle ever! So here is my idea from pulling the trigger to the end....
After the trigger is pulled a large spring at the back of the rifle will catapult the first ball into a thin steel plate and on the other side is a magnet (the plate keeps the magnet from cracking). From here it hits about 12 more units. Now the ending is something I am unsure about. I kind of want to just stick a small pin on the last ball and have the pin go through a small rifled barrel at the end. Another idea is to have the last ball strike a pin which will then hit a very small metal ball which will travel to the end of a small tube and be forced through the crimped top.

Now I am posting this because some of you are science lovers and I want you input on the function. If you have a better way of doing anything please post.

By 12 more units do you mean ball bearings or ball bearing/magnet serieses? Because just adding more bearings won't make it stronger.

Oh... guns...

I saw "a weapon project *Gaussian-" on the front page, and I thought this was gonna be some crazy Photoshop thread.

I think I had an idea to improve reloading. After each firing you pretty much have to reset each ball back into is original place, before refiring.

The previous videos showed that the magnets always moved. This video shows that you can keep the magnets in place while and it will still work. My idea is sort of based off of this.

At the top of the barrel, you would attach a mechanism much like the red thing in the image below. When you move it forward, an arm would pry about the ball from the magnet. Maybe you already thought of this though.

I kind of thought of it. Those plates need to be in there anyways to protect the magnets from the force of the ball bearings. The idea of a bolt is good except for the fact that the pull from the magnets are tremendous. A lever might be needed to work the action. It would also need to **** the spring and load in a new nail.
