I'm not sure how true this is, but Giga Bowser and Warioman have a small file compared to actual playable characters because they only have their own model. For the animations, they reference Bowser and Wario, right? Also, wouldn't this be how the moveswap code works? Say you are Ganondorf and you moveswap with Captain Falcon. You are using the Ganondorf model, but it references Falcon's animations.
Theoretically, we could ISO hack Brawl and add in Dr. Mario's Melee model and have him reference Mario's animations through a few lines of code. Then, we could edit the attributes of Dr. Mario to make him seperate enough from Mario to not be a true clone. We could also even do this with Mewtwo, Pichu, Roy, and Young Link, matching them with their respective base/similar characters.
